Periodic trends in gas-phase oxidation and hydrogenation reactions of lanthanides and 5d transition metal cations

Enthalpy of the Cerium (Ce) Chemi-Ionization Reaction and CeO+, CeC+, and CeCO+ Bond Energies Determined by Energy-Resolved Guided Ion Beam Mass Spectrometry Experiments

Cerium (Ce) oxide, carbide, and carbonyl cation bond energies and the exothermicity of the Ce chemi-ionization (CI) reaction with atomic oxygen were investigated using guided-ion beam tandem mass spectrometry (GIBMS). The kinetic energy dependent product cross sections for reactions of Ce+ with O2, CO, and CO2 and CeO+ with O2, CO, Xe, and Ar were measured using GIBMS. For the reactions of Ce+ with O2 and CO2, CeO+ is formed through an exothermic reaction, whereas CeO+ formation is endothermic in the reaction with CO. This reaction also forms CeC+ and CeCO+ is formed in the reaction of Ce+ with CO2, both in endothermic processes. Reactions of CeO+ with all four gases led to endothermic collision-induced dissociation as well as exchange reactions to form CeO2+ for the O2 and CO reactants. Bond dissociation energies (BDEs) at 0 K were determined through analyses of the kinetic energy dependent cross sections for all endothermic reactions. We determined that the BDEs of CeO+, CeC+, and CeCO+ are 8.46 ± 0.15, 3.93 ± 0.16, and ≥0.25 ± 0.07 eV, respectively, where the CeO+ BDE is a weighted average of 6 independent 0 K threshold measurements. The CeO+ BDE is combined with the ionization energy (IE) of Ce to determine an exothermicity of 2.91 ± 0.15 eV for the Ce + O → CeO+ + e- chemi-ionization reaction. Combined with neutral BDEs from the literature, the thermochemistry determined here also provides IE(CeO) = 5.03 ± 0.12 eV and IE(CeC) = 6.50 ± 0.16 eV. Theoretical calculations for ground and some excited states were performed for CeO+, CeC+, and CeCO+ to provide insight into the bonding and a comparison with the experimentally determined BDEs for each molecule.

Dynamics of carbene formation in the reaction of methane with the tantalum cation in the gas phase

The controlled activation of methane has drawn significant attention throughout various disciplines over the last few decades. In gas-phase experiments, the use of model systems with reduced complexity compared to condensed-phase catalytic systems allows us to investigate the intrinsic reactivity of elementary reactions down to the atomic level. Methane is rather inert in chemical reactions, as the weakening or cleavage of a C-H bond is required to make use of methane as C1-building block. The simplest model system for transition-metal-based catalysts is a mono-atomic metal ion. Only a few atomic transition-metal cations activate methane at room temperature. One of the most efficient elements is tantalum, which forms a carbene and releases molecular hydrogen in the reaction with methane: Ta+ + CH4 → TaCH2+ + H2. The reaction takes place at room temperature due to efficient intersystem crossing from the quintet to the triplet surface, i.e., from the electronic ground state of the tantalum cation to the triplet ground state of the tantalum carbene. This multi-state reactivity is often seen for reactions involving transition-metal centres, but leads to their theoretical treatment being a challenge even today. Chemical reactions, or to be precise reactive collisions, are dynamic processes making their description even more of a challenge to experiment and theory alike. Experimental energy- and angle-differential cross sections allow us to probe the rearrangement of atoms during a reactive collision. By interpreting the scattering signatures, we gain insight into the atomistic mechanisms and can move beyond stationary descriptions. Here, we present a study combining collision energy dependent experimentally measured differential cross sections with ab initio calculations of the minimum energy pathway. Product ion velocity distributions were recorded using our crossed-beam velocity map imaging experiment dedicated to studying transition-metal ion molecule reactions. TaCH2+ velocity distributions reveal a significant degree of indirect dynamics. However, the scattering distributions also show signatures of rebound dynamics. We compare the present results to the oxygen transfer reaction between Ta+ and carbon dioxide, which we recently studied.

A Common Bottleneck for Metal Oxidation by Molecular Oxygen Across Size Regimes: Kinetics of Atomic Lanthanide Cations (La+-Lu+) with O2

Kinetics of the lanthanide cations (Ln+ = La+-Lu+ excluding Pm+) reacting with molecular oxygen were measured in a selected-ion flow tube apparatus from 300 to 600 K. Where exothermic, these reactions occur efficiently, producing LnO+ + O. The reactions display positive temperature dependences consistent with Arrhenius equation behavior and show small activation energies (0-2 kJ mol-1) that are strongly correlated to promotion energies of the Ln+ atoms. Reanalysis of literature data on neutral Ln + O2 reactions show a similar correlation with slightly larger activation energies (0-10 kJ mol-1). The data are explained by a common mechanism controlling oxidation by molecular oxygen in these systems, as well as in gas-phase reactions of transition metal and posttransition metal cluster anions, neutral clusters deposited on surfaces, and for oxygen incident on metal surfaces. It is posited that across these systems, the height of an early barrier along the reaction coordinate is predictable based on knowledge of the electronic states of the reactants and may be used to either promote or inhibit oxygen activation.

Ab initio spectroscopy and thermochemistry of the platinum hydride ions, PtH+ and PtH

Rovibrational levels of low-lying electronic states of the gas-phase, diatomic molecules, PtH+ and PtH-, are computed on potential-energy functions obtained by using a hybrid spin-orbit configuration-interaction procedure. PtH- has a well-separated Σ0++1 ground state, while the first two electronic states of PtH+ (Σ0++1 and 3Δ3) are nearly degenerate. Combining the experimental photoelectron (PE) spectra of PtH- with theoretical photodetachment spectroscopy leads to an improved value for the electron affinity of PtH, EA(PtH) = (1.617 ± 0.015) eV. When PtH- is a product of photodissociation of PtHCO2-, its PE spectrum is broad because of rotational excitation. Temperature-dependent thermodynamic functions and thermochemistry of dissociation are computed from the theoretical energy levels. Previously published energetic quantities for PtH+ and PtH- are revised. The ground 1Σ+ term of PtH+ is not well described using single-reference theory.

The bond energy of UN+: Guided ion beam studies of the reactions of U+ with N2 and NO

A guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometer was used to study the reactions of U+ with N2 and NO. Reaction cross sections were measured over a wide range of energy for both systems. In each reaction, UN+ is formed by an endothermic process, thereby enabling the direct measurement of the threshold energy and determination of the UN+ bond dissociation energy. For the reaction of U+ + N2, a threshold energy (E0) of 4.02 ± 0.11 eV was measured, leading to D0 (UN+) = 5.73 ± 0.11 eV. The reaction of U+ + NO yields UO+ through an exothermic, barrierless process that proceeds with 94 ± 23% efficiency at the lowest energy. Analysis of the endothermic UN+ cross section in this reaction provides E0 = 0.72 ± 0.11 eV and, therefore, D0 (UN+) = 5.78 ± 0.11 eV. Averaging the values obtained from both reactions, we report D0 (UN+) = 5.76 ± 0.13 eV as our best value (uncertainty of two standard deviations). Combined with precise literature values for the ionization energies of U and UN, we also derive D0 (UN) = 5.86 ± 0.13 eV. Both bond dissociation energies agree well with high-level theoretical treatments in the literature. The formation of UN+ in reaction of U+ with NO also exhibits a considerable increase in reaction probability above ∼3 eV. Theory suggests that this may be consistent with the formation of UN+ in excited quintet spin states, which we hypothesize are dynamically favored because the number of 5f electrons in reactants and products is conserved.

Adiabatic ionization energies of RuC, RhC, OsC, IrC, and PtC

The ionization energies (IEs) of RuC, RhC, OsC, IrC, and PtC are assigned by the measurement of their two-photon ionization thresholds. Although late transition metal-carbon bonds are of major importance in organometallic chemistry and catalysis, accurate and precise fundamental thermochemical data on these chemical bonds are mainly lacking in the literature. Based on their two-photon ionization thresholds, in this work, we assign IE(RuC) = 7.439(40) eV, IE(RhC) = 7.458(32) eV, IE(OsC) = 8.647(25) eV, IE(IrC) = 8.933(74) eV, and IE(PtC) = 9.397(32) eV. These experimentally derived IEs are further confirmed through quantum chemical calculations using coupled-cluster single double perturbative triple methods that are extrapolated to the complete basis set limit using a three-parameter mixed Gaussian/exponential extrapolation scheme and corrected for spin-orbit effects using a semiempirical method. The electronic structure and chemical bonding of these MC species are discussed in the context of these ionization energy measurements. The IEs of RuC, RhC, OsC, and IrC closely mirror the IEs of the corresponding transition metal atoms, suggesting that for these species, the (n + 1)s electrons of the transition metals are not significantly involved in chemical bonding.

f-Block reactions of metal cations with carbon dioxide studied by inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry

f-Block chemistry offers an opportunity to test current knowledge of chemical reactivity. The energy dependence of lanthanide cation (Ln+ = Ce+, Pr+, Nd+-Eu+) and actinide cation (An+ = Th+, U+-Am+) oxidation reactions by CO2, was observed by inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry. This reaction is commonly spin-unallowed because the neutral reactant (CO2, 1Σ+g) and product (CO, 1Σ+) require the metal and metal oxide cations to have the same spin state. Correlation of the promotion energy (Ep) to the first state with two free d-electrons with the reaction efficiency indicates that spin conservation is not a primary factor in the reaction rate. The Ep likely influences the reaction rate by partially setting the crossing between the ground and reactive states. Comparison of Ln+ and An+ congener reactivity indicates that the 5f-orbitals play a small role in the An+ reactions.

Gas-Phase Reactivity of Ozone with Lanthanide Ions (Sm+, Nd+) and Their Higher Oxides

The kinetics of SmO_n⁺ (n = 0-2) and NdO_n⁺ (n = 0-2) with O₃ are measured using a selected-ion flow tube. Reaction of Nd⁺ to yield NdO⁺ + O₂ occurs rapidly, with a rate constant near the capture-controlled limit of ∼8 × 10^-10 cm³ s^-1. NdO⁺ reacts at ∼40% of the capture limit to yield NdO₂⁺ with little temperature dependence from 200 to 400 K. NdO₂⁺ likely reacts very slowly (k ∼ 10^-13 cm³ s^-1) to yield NdO⁺ + 2O₂, does not react to yield NdO₃⁺, and associates slowly (k ∼ 10^-12 cm³ s^-1) to yield NdO₂⁺(O₃)_1-3. Reaction of Sm⁺ also yields SmO⁺ at near the capture limit at all temperatures, but a significant fraction (∼50%) of the SmO⁺ is produced in excited states that are long-lived compared to the millisecond time scale of the experiment. These states are evidently resistant to both radiative and collisional relaxation. The excited-state production is likely due to a spin-conservation constraint on the reaction, despite the large spin-orbit coupling typical for lanthanide-containing species. Ground-state SmO⁺ reacts inefficiently (k = 2 × 10^-11 (T/300)^-2.5 cm³ s^-1) to yield SmO₂⁺ + O₂, while the excited-state SmO^+* reacts at the capture limit, with branching to yield Sm⁺ + 2O₂ (ΔH_r,0K = 148.7 ± 0.4 kJ mol^-1 for ground-state SmO⁺) approximately 60% of the time, the remainder forming SmO₂⁺, which further reacts with O₃ to yield SmO⁺ at about 1% of the collisional value.

Activation of CO2 by Actinide Cations (Th+, U+, Pu+, and Am+) as Studied by Guided Ion Beam and Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry

Reactions of CO₂ with Th⁺ have been studied using guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometry (GIBMS) and with An⁺ (An⁺ = Th⁺, U⁺, Pu⁺, and Am⁺) using triple quadrupole inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (QQQ-ICP-MS). Additionally, the reactions ThO⁺ + CO and ThO⁺ + CO₂ were examined using GIBMS. Modeling the kinetic energy-dependent GIBMS data allowed the determination of bond dissociation energies (BDEs) for D₀(Th⁺-O) and D₀(OTh⁺-O) that are in reasonable agreement with previous GIBMS measurements. The QQQ-ICP-MS reactions were studied at higher pressures where multiple collisions between An⁺ and the neutral CO₂ occur. As a consequence, both AnO⁺ and AnO₂⁺ products were observed for all An⁺ except Am⁺, where only AmO⁺ was observed. The relative abundances of the observed monoxides compared to the dioxides are consistent with previous reports of the AnO_n⁺ (n = 1, 2) BDEs. A comparison of the periodic trends of the group 4 transition metal, lanthanide (Ln), and actinide atomic cations in reactions with CO₂ (a formally spin-forbidden reaction for most M⁺ ground states) and O₂ (a spin-unrestricted reaction) indicates that spin conservation plays a minor role, if any, for the heavier Ln⁺ and An⁺ metals. Further correlation of Ln⁺ and An⁺ + CO₂ reaction efficiencies with the promotion energy (E_p) to the first electronic state with two valence d-electrons (E_p(5d²) for Ln⁺ and E_p(6d²) for An⁺) indicates that the primary limitation in the activation of CO₂ is the energetic cost to promote from the electronic ground state of the atomic metal ion to a reactive state.

Bond Dissociation Energies Reveal the Participation of d Electrons in f-Element Halide Bonding

Bond dissociation energies (BDEs) reported in the literature for lanthanide monofluorides and lanthanide monochlorides LnX, where X = F or Cl, exhibit substantial irregular variations across the Ln series. It is demonstrated here that correlations of these variations with reported experimentally based atomic energies to prepare the Ln constituent for bonding reveal the nature of the bonding. Whereas some molecular characteristics are well understood in the context of highly ionic bonding, with LnX considered to be (Ln⁺)(X^-), some significant variations in BDEs are not well rationalized simply by ionization to convert Ln to Ln⁺ for bonding. Focusing here on lanthanide monofluorides LnF, a consideration of alternative Ln preparation schemes shows that a particularly good rationalization of BDEs is obtained by invoking the participation of a lanthanide 5d electron in bonding. This 5d participation could be in ionic (Ln⁺)(F^-) via π-donation from F^- 2p to empty Ln⁺ 5d orbitals or in covalent π-bonded Ln:F via polarization from Ln 5d to F 2p, with these ionic and polar covalent perspectives ultimately being equivalent. The inference of lanthanide 5d involvement suggests that the valence 4f and 6s electrons do not effectively participate in some key aspects of the bonding, presumably due to poor spatial overlap with F 2p orbitals. An extension to actinide monofluorides, AnF, assumes analogous ionic or polar covalent bonding involving a valence 6d electron and results in predictions for BDEs that include a general decrease from left to right across the series, except for a distinctive local minimum at AmF. Determining the BDE for AmF would serve to evaluate the predictions and the underlying assumption of 6d bonding. The BDE assessments/predictions for neutral monofluorides, LnF and AnF, are also applied to cationic LnF⁺ and AnF⁺, and it is noted that the approach can be directly extended to f-element monochlorides, monobromides, and monoiodides.

Holmium (Ho) oxide, carbide, and dioxide cation bond energies and evaluation of the Ho + O → HoO+ + e- chemi-ionization reaction enthalpy

Guided ion beam tandem mass spectrometry (GIBMS) and quantum chemical calculations are employed to evaluate the title chemi-ionization reaction with holmium. Exchange reactions of Ho⁺ with O₂, CO, and SO₂ and HoO⁺ with CO, as well as collision-induced dissociation (CID) reactions of HoO⁺ with Xe, O₂, and CO, were performed using GIBMS. Formation of HoO⁺ is exothermic in reactions with O₂ and SO₂ but endothermic for reaction with CO, as is the exchange reaction of HoO⁺ with CO. Quantitative analysis of these reactions and the three CID reactions provides a robust method to determine the bond dissociation energy (BDE) of Ho⁺-O, 6.02 ± 0.13 eV. BDEs for Ho⁺-C and OHo⁺-O are also measured as 2.27 ± 0.19 and 2.70 ± 0.27 eV, respectively. All three measurements are the first direct determinations of these BDEs. By combining the BDE of HoO⁺ with the well-established ionization energy of Ho, the exothermicity of Ho in the title chemi-ionization reaction can also be obtained as 0.00 ± 0.13 eV. All experimental thermochemistry was then compared to quantum chemical calculations for the purpose of establishing benchmarks and validation. BDEs determined via these calculations are in agreement with the experiment within the inherent experimental and theoretical uncertainties, with results obtained at the coupled-cluster with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations, CCSD(T), using all-electron basis sets yielding the most accurate results.
