Structural Characteristics and Permeability of Ethyl Cellulose Films Containing Different Plasticizers

Ultrathin cellulose film coating of porous alumina membranes for adsorption of superoxide dismutase

The non-toxic and biocompatible cellulose possesses nonspecific binding properties for many protein molecules. But its abundant inter- and intra-molecular hydrogen bonds induce spontaneous self-assembly of cellulose into a random fibrous morphology and cellulose film coating is usually just available for two-dimensional flat substrates, which severely limits its protein adsorption performance. In this study, direct self-assembly of an ultrathin cellulose film on hybrid polyelectrolyte multilayer pre-coated pore surfaces of an anodic aluminum oxide membrane was achieved through the dissolution and precipitation of cellulose from N-methylmorpholine oxide solution. Each pore channel surface pre-coated with a uniform polyelectrolyte hybrid layer (thickness ∼5.0 nm) was covered by a cellulose film (∼15.0 nm) consisting of dense cellulose nanoparticles with a diameter of 5.5 ± 1.4 nm. The three-dimensional porous structure of the aluminum oxide membrane was well-preserved and micrometre-long flexible nanotubes with an average outer diameter of ∼200 nm were obtained after further aluminum oxide template dissolution treatment in an acidic environment. Moreover, the cellulose film coated pore channel surfaces presented sufficient hydrogen bonds and exhibited a high adsorption capacity rate of ∼1.45 mg m^-2 for superoxide dismutase. This facile cellulose deposition approach enabled ultrathin cellulose film coating on three-dimensional structured substrates for enhanced adsorption performance for protein molecules.

Use of ethylcellulose to control chlorsulfuron leaching in a calcareous soil

Controlled release formulations (CRFs) have been researched to reduce the water-polluting risk derived from the use of conventional formulations of chlorsulfuron. Coated chlorsulfuron granules were produced in a Wuster-type fluidized-bed equipment using two different amounts of ethylcellulose. The highest one was modified by the addition of a plasticizer such as dibutyl sebacate. The encapsulation efficiency and morphological properties of coated granules having been studied, the chlorsulfuron kinetic release in water was studied. In addition, the mobility of chlorsulfuron in a calcareous soil was finally carried out. High encapsulation efficiency was obtained, being nearly 100% in all cases. SEM pictures show a homogeneous film in coated CRFs; thickness oscillates between 23.32 microm for the system prepared with a 10% of ethylcellulose and 32.61 microm for the system prepared with a 20% ethylcellulose plus plasticizer. The rate of chlorsulfuron release from coated CRFs is diminished in all cases in relation to chlorsulfuron commercial formulation, the latter being completely dissolved in <1 h, but it took at least 50 days to release 90% of chlorsulfuron from the formulation coated with a 20% ethylcellulose plus plasticizer. Using a generic equation, the time taken for 50% of the active ingredient to be released into water (t(50)) was calculated. From the analysis of the t(50) values, it can be deduced that the release rate of chlorsulfuron can be mainly controlled by changing the thickness of the coating film, by modifying the surface properties of the coating film, and by adding a plasticizer. Mobility experiments carried out in calcareous soil show that the use of coated CRFs reduces the presence of chlorsulfuron in the leachate compared to commercial formulation.

Physico-mechanical analysis of free ethyl cellulose films comprised with novel plasticizers of vitamin resources

This research was conducted to investigate the physico-mechanical characteristics of the EC-based coating membranes plasticized with two informal ingredients of vitamin resources, cholecalciferol and alpha-tocopherol, with respect to the commercial plasticizer DBS. Proceeding the experiment, free thin polymer sheetings of the sample formulations, incorporating incremental weight percents of the individual plasticizers were prepared employing a revised casting method of delayed solvent evaporation whereby similar flat specimens of standard dimensions were subjected to tensile loadings and extensions. The data were analyzed through the known equations of membrane theory in spherical subjects considering the complete symmetry of assumingly spherical pellets and/or granules. The relative tensile parameters of the experimental and commercial plasticizers in the resilient region were also estimated to fairly decide on a moderate explanation of a strong, hard, and tough structure among the specimens. The results implied the great compatibility of the oily soluble vitamins in EC networks projecting higher factors of safety and greater ultimate strength, toughness, and young coefficient of the formulations compared to the specimens plasticized with the commercial DBS within a concentration range of 40-50% (w/w) of the polymer solids. alpha-Tocopherol represented supremacy over colecalciferol to result in relatively a 2-fold (and practically a 4-fold with respect to DBS) greater increase in the modulus of resilience. The vitamin compounds and in essential alpha-tocopherol, in consequence, can properly be applied at concentrations of 40-50% (w/w) as efficient plasticizers to provide a greater protection of the structure against sudden fractures of dynamic and continuously increasing environmental and biological stresses.
