Abstract
Nutritional programming is the idea that early nutrient contributions can influence organismal structure or function and is documented in a variety of vertebrates, yet studies in fish are largely lacking. Tilapia are an important foodfish, with global production having increased rapidly since the 1990s. They exhibit high disease-resistance and grow well on formulated feeds which makes them an ideal aquaculture species, however incorporating high quality proteins into feeds can be costly. As feed constitutes 50-70% of total production costs in aquaculture, reducing protein content could curb these costs and increase revenue. Thus, we examined the effects of feeding Nile tilapia (O. niloticus) fry a restricted protein diet for the first 7-21 days on growth, gut microbial flora, and the intestinal transcriptome. Fish were fed either a 25% restricted or 48% control crude protein starter (ST) diet for up to 21 days and then switched to a 25% or 38% control crude protein growout (GO) diet. Fish fed a 25% ST diet for 14 days followed by a 38% GO diet had significantly higher lengths and weights and better feed efficiency than fish fed the control 48% ST and 38% GO diet after 56 days of culture. Growth of fry on the 25% ST, 7-day/38% GO and the 25% ST,7-day/25% GO diets did not differ from the those fed the control protein diets, while fish fed the 25% ST diet for 21 days had significantly lower growth and survival rates. We observed no significant differences in either alpha or beta diversity of the gut microbial flora between diets, however species richness (Shannon Index) was higher in fry fed the 25% protein ST diet regardless of the GO diet. Similarly, fish fed the 25% ST diet for 14 days followed by the 38% GO diet had minimal changes to the intestinal transcriptome relative to fish fed the control 48% ST and 38% GO diet. However, those fed 25% ST and GO diets for the entire 56 days exhibited substantial differences in the gut transcriptome from other groups showing gene expression profiles characteristic of detrimental changes to gut physiology, protein metabolism and immune function. Results suggest protein restriction for up to 14 days early in development leads to enhanced growth and feed efficiency with minimal effects on gut microbes or intestinal function. Protein restriction beyond this period appears detrimental to fish growth and health as underscored by expression of disease related genes and higher mortality rates.

Abstract
Ramie (Boehmeria nivea, BN) is used as livestock forage through suitable silage fermentation owing to its nutritional value. To date, relatively few studies have investigated the effects of dietary fermented BN (FBN) on gut health in finishing pigs. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with 20% FBN on intestinal morphology, gene expression, and the functional response of the gut microbiota in finishing pigs. We found that FBN did not significantly affect serum antioxidant enzyme activities, ileal morphology, or the expression of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes, inflammatory cytokines, or tight junction proteins in the liver of the pigs. However, the gene expression levels of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) and interleukin 6 (IL6) were significantly downregulated in the ileum. A metagenomic analysis demonstrated that, compared with that seen in the control group, the cecal microbiota of pigs in the FBN treatment group was more closely clustered and contained a greater number of unique microbes. Bacteria were the predominant kingdom in the cecal microbiota, while Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria were the dominant phyla, and Streptococcus, Lactobacillus, and Prevotella were the dominant genera. Dietary FBN significantly increased the abundance of the probiotic bacterium Roseburia inulinivorans (p < 0.05). Functional analysis of the cecal microbiota showed that ABC transporter levels and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis-associated functions were diminished in FBN-fed pigs. Meanwhile, CAZyme analysis revealed that dietary FBN significantly downregulated the contents of carbohydrate-active enzymes, such as GT2, GH1, GH25, and GH13_31. In addition, cytochrome P450 analysis revealed that the abundance of CYP51 and CYP512 decreased with FBN treatment. An assessment of antibiotic resistance based on the Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database (CARD) annotation indicated that the cecal microbes from pigs in the FBN treatment group had increased resistance to lincosamide, streptogramin, and chloramphenicol and reduced resistance to amikacin, isepamicin, neomycin, lividomycin, gentamicin, paromomycin, ribostamycin, and butirosin. Finally, virulence factor-related analysis showed that putative hemolysin-associated functions were decreased, whereas fibronectin-binding protein, flagella, and alginate-associated functions were increased. Taken together, our data showed that FBN supplementation exerted only minor effects on intestinal morphology and microbial community composition, suggesting that it is potentially safe for use as a supplement in the diets of finishing pigs. However, more studies are needed to validate its functionality.

Abstract
Carbamazepine (CBZ) in the aquatic environment is recognized as a potential threat to aquatic organisms and public health. However, the response of organism intestinal health, resistome, microbiota, and their relationship after CBZ exposure has been rarely reported. This study aimed to explore the impacts of CBZ on gut microbiota, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the expression of intestinal health related genes as well as their interaction using the zebrafish model. 16 S ribosomal RNA sequencing indicated CBZ altered the composition of gut microbiota. Using high-throughput quantitative polymerase chain reaction (HT-qPCR), we found the number and abundance of ARGs were impacted by CBZ levels and exposure duration. We also observed the upregulated expression of the pro-inflammatory gene IL6 and downregulated expression of toll-like receptor gene TLR2 and intestinal barrier gene TJP2a at different exposure times. Correlation analyses revealed that Geobacillus, Rhodococcus, Ralstonia, Delftia, Luteolibacter and Escherichia-Shigella might be the main bacterial genera carrying ARGs. Meanwhile, Cetobacterium and Aeromonas could be the dominant bacteria affecting intestinal health related genes. Our results could contribute to understanding the health risks of CBZ to the intestinal microecology of aquatic animals.

Abstract
Fish microbiome science is progressing fast, but it is biased toward farmed or laboratory fish species against natural fish populations, which remain considerably underinvestigated. We analyzed the midgut bacterial microbiota of 45 specimens of 12 fish species collected from the Gyaros Island marine protected area (Aegean Sea, Greece). The species belong to seven taxonomic families and are either herbivores or omnivores. Mucosa midgut bacterial diversity was assessed by amplicon metabarcoding of the 16S rRNA V3-V4 gene region. A total of 854 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were identified. In each fish species, between 2 and 18 OTUs dominated with cumulative relative abundance ≥ 70%. Most of the dominating bacterial taxa have been reported to occur both in wild and farmed fish populations. The midgut bacterial communities were different among the 12 fish species, except for Pagrus pagrus and Pagellus erythrinus, which belong to the Sparidae family. No differentiation of the midgut bacterial microbiota was found based on feeding habits, i.e., omnivorous vs. carnivorous. Comparing wild and farmed P. pagrus midgut bacterial microbiota revealed considerable variation between them. Our results expand the gut microbiota of wild fish and support the host species effect as the more likely factor shaping intestinal bacterial microbiota.

Abstract
Nutrition demands in aquaculture can be realized through quality aquafeeds as compounded diets that contribute to the growth and health of aquaculture species. Functional additives in feed, notably probiotics, prebiotics, and their admixture synbiotics, have been recently recognized for their biotherapeutic role as immunostimulants capable of conferring disease resistance, stress tolerance, and gastrointestinal health; counteracting the negative effects of anti-nutrients, pathogenic prevalence, and antimicrobials in finfish aquaculture. Formulated diets based on probiotics, prebiotics, and as a supplemental combination for synbiotics can significantly influence fish gut microbiomes, establishing the modalities of microbial dynamics to maximize host-associated benefits. These microbial functional-feed supplements are acclaimed to be biocompatible, biodegradable, and safe for dietary consumption as well as the environment. In fed fish aquaculture, prebiotic appended probiotic diet 'synbiotic' has propounded larger attention for its additional health and nutritional benefits. Synbiotic, prebiotic, and probiotic usage as functional feeds for finfish aquaculture thus provides promising prospects. Developing trends in their intended application are reviewed here forth.

Abstract
A 6-month feeding trial was conducted to compare the effects of extruded pellet (EP) and moist pellet (MP) feed on the growth performance, non-specific immunity, and intestinal microbiota of olive flounder. A total of 60,000 fish with an average weight of 70.8 ± 6.4 g were divided into two groups and fed with one of two experimental diets. At the end of a 6-month feeding trial, the weight gain and specific growth rate of the fish fed with the MP diets were significantly higher than those of fish fed with EP (P < 0.05). However, the EP group exhibited a lower feed conversion rate than the MP group, meaning that the EP diet was more cost-effective. Whole-body proximate compositions and non-specific immune responses (superoxide dismutase, myeloperoxidase, and lysozyme activity) were not significantly different between the two groups. There were no significant differences in the α-diversity of the intestinal bacterial community of the two groups. However, the composition of microorganisms at the phylum to genus level was different between the groups. The EP group was rich in Actinobacteria, Corynebacterium, Bacillus, and Lactobacillus, whereas the MP group was dominated by Proteobacteria, Vibrio, and Edwardsiella. Collectively, the MP diet increased growth performance and pathogen concentration in the gut; whereas EP improved feed conversion and beneficial Bacillus and Lactobacillus proportion in the intestinal microbial community.

Abstract
Simple Summary The demand for fishmeal is increasing due to aquaculture development, but the supply is unstable. This indicates the need to reduce the fishmeal content in the feed and develop an optimal fish-feed formulation through substitutes. However, most studies on reducing fishmeal content in feed were conducted at the laboratory level. In this study, the application of a low-fishmeal diet as feed to olive flounder was evaluated in terms of growth-related factors, digestive physiology, and microbiota raised for five months in a fish farm using four feed formulations- FM70 [control (CON), 70% fishmeal], FM45 (45% fishmeal), FM35A (35% fishmeal), and FM35B (35% fishmeal + insect meal). There was no difference in growth-related factors, digestive physiology, and gut microbiota diversity compared with the CON-fed fish. Therefore, reducing the fishmeal content of the feed by up to 35% does not adversely affect growth and physiological characteristics under farm conditions. Abstract In olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), growth performance, expression of growth-related factors, digestive physiology, and gut microbiota were assessed under farm conditions in the fish fed diets with low levels of fishmeal. Four experimental diets were prepared, FM70 [control (CON), 70% fishmeal], FM45 (45% fishmeal), FM35A (35% fishmeal), and FM35B (35% fishmeal + insect meal), and fed to the fish for five months. The CON-fed fish had the highest plasma GH, but IGF-1 and hepatic IGF-1 mRNA expression of the olive flounder fed diets with low-fishmeal levels did not significantly differ among diets. The intestinal villus length, muscular thickness, and the number of goblet cells were statistically similar, and ocular examination of hepatopancreas showed no discernable difference in all experimental diets. The chymotrypsin content of FM35B-fed fish is significantly lower, but trypsin and lipase contents are similar. The diversity of gut microbiota did not differ among groups, although the FM35B group had a higher composition of Firmicutes. Thus, a diet with reduced fishmeal content and several alternative protein sources can be used as feed ingredients in feed formulation for olive flounder reared under typical aquaculture farm conditions.

Abstract
Due to the production of large quantities of electronic waste (e-waste), unsafe dismantling has caused serious pollution as well as toxicological impacts on both wildlife and humans. As an important aspect of physiology and health, the wildlife's gut microbiota and its changes induced by pollution have been recruiting increasing concerns. To reveal the gut microbiota-related ecotoxicology induced by e-waste dismantling, this study resolves the gut microbiota profile of Anabas testudineus, a native highly adapted nonmodel fish under the in situ exposure, and reveals whether and how the microbiota was altered. The comparisons are made by collecting samples from different e-waste polluted sites in Guiyu (a town in South China) and a nearby reference (nonpolluted) site. The overall gut microbiota landscape of A. testudineus is similar to that of other reported fishes, with an average of ∼300 OTUs, and constituted by Firmicutes (34.51%), Fusobacteria (29.16%) as the major phyla. Obviously different liver metal burdens/fingerprints were observed between the e-waste and reference sites. Accordingly, although the alpha-diversity (ACE, Simpson, and Shannon) of the gut microbiota did not significantly vary, a detailed exploration of the microbiota constitution indicated significant differences at various taxonomic levels, including a series of significantly different species and biomarkers, and showing site-specific beta-diversity clustering patterns. Interestingly, a few bacteria with greater abundance in the fish gut of e-waste polluted sites were also reported to present in other contaminated environments, have a role in wastewater treatment, be capable to transform metal, etc. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and Pearson association analyses indicated significant associations between Mn and Cetobacterium somerae (Pearson r = 0.3612, p = 0.0008) and between Pb and Clostridium colicanis (Pearson r = 0.5151, p < 0.0001). In summary, pollution from e-waste dismantling may have a role in altering the fish gut microbiota, and this research provides insights for better understanding e-waste ecotoxicology and improving future conservation.

Abstract
Microorganism contamination is one of the most important factors affecting the spoilage and food safety of Manila clams. This study aimed to gain insights into bacterial composition and the dynamic change of bacterial communities on retailed Manila clam during refrigerated storage within the edible period. High-throughput sequencing was conducted to monitor the bacterial population with the prolongation of storage time of Day 0, Day 1, and Day 3. Result demonstrated that phyla of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, Acidobacteriota, and Chloroflexi composed the majority of bacterial communities during the whole observation process. Furthermore, the increase of Proteobacteria showed a positive correlation with the storage time, whereas Acidobacteriota and Chloroflexi continued to decline in storage. For genus annotation, none of genus obtained dominant population in storage. From Day 0 to Day 1, the genera of Streptomyces, Bradyrhizobium, and Mycobacterium significantly increased; meanwhile, 12 genera significantly decreased. Compared with samples at Day 0, a total of 15 genera significantly decreased with the reduced proportion ranging from 0.50 to 4.40% at Day 3. At the end of the storage, the genus Crossiella became the most redundant population. Both the richness and diversity decreased at the start of storage at Day 1, and then slightly increased at Day 3 was observed. Based on the result in this study, strategy targeting the increased bacteria could be tested to improve the consumption quality and safety of refrigerated clam.

Abstract
Purpose To study the application of medical image recognition technology based on backpropagation neural network (BPNN) in the effect of soybean meal replacing fish meal on intestinal microbial diversity of Channa argus and to evaluate the application value of this intelligent algorithm, Channa argus was fed with different contents of soybean meal instead of fish meal. Methods After intestinal samples were collected and bacteria were isolated, microscopic imaging was performed, and the images were classified and identified. BPNN was constructed to perform denoising, smoothing, and segmentation. Results After BPNN processing, the bacteria were completely separated from the original image background, and the bacteria was in the closed state, which was beneficial to feature extraction and species recognition. If there were 2 hidden layer nodes, the segmentation accuracy of bacterial microscopic images was the highest, up to 97.3%. With the replacement ratio of fish meal increased, the species of intestinal microbiome gradually enriched, and the relative abundance of intestinal microbiome was higher after fish meal was completely replaced by soybean meal (replacement). The intestinal microbial enzyme activities were affected by different fish meal and soybean meal contents in the diet. The glutamate transaminase and adenosine deaminase activities were increased after the replacement and were higher than those before the replacement, with statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). Conclusion Replacement of fish meal with soybean meal has a significant effect on the intestinal flora diversity of Channa argus, and there is a close relationship between them. The image recognition technology based on BPNN has high recognition rate and segmentation accuracy for microbiological microscopic images.

Abstract
In recent years, a growing number of studies sought to examine the composition and the determinants of the gut microflora in marine animals, including fish. For tropical tuna, which are among the most consumed fish worldwide, there is scarce information on their enteric bacterial communities and how they evolve during fish growth. In this study, we used metabarcoding of the 16S rDNA gene to (1) describe the diversity and composition of the gut bacteriome in the three most fished tuna species (skipjack, yellowfin and bigeye), and (2) to examine its intra-specific variability from juveniles to larger adults. Although there was a remarkable convergence of taxonomic richness and bacterial composition between yellowfin and bigeyes tuna, the gut bacteriome of skipjack tuna was distinct from the other two species. Throughout fish growth, the enteric bacteriome of yellowfin and bigeyes also showed significant modifications, while that of skipjack tuna remained relatively homogeneous. Finally, our results suggest that the gut bacteriome of marine fish may not always be subject to structural modifications during their growth, especially in species that maintain a steady feeding behavior during their lifetime.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the long‐term effect of a low fish meal (FM) diet comprising plant‐based protein sources (PPS) on changes of gut microbial diversity in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) over the course of life. Two experimental diets were prepared to contain 74% FM (control) or 52% FM with 22% PPS (30% FM replacement, FM30). Fish were fed one of the two experimental diets for 8 months, and we collected the midgut contents to analyze the gut bacterial community by Illumina MiSeq based on the metagenomic sequences in the V3–V4 regions of 16S rRNA. We found that there were nine dominant phyla, which in turn presented Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria as the three major phyla in the gut microbiota of the flounder. At genus level, the dominant genera were Delftia, Prevotella, and Chthoniobacter at the juvenile stage (below 100 g/fish); Chthoniobacter, Bacillus, and Bradyrhizobium at the grower stage (400 g/fish); Chthoniobacter, Bacillus, and Delftia at the subadult stage (800 g/fish); and Lactobacillus and Prevotella at the adult stage (over 1,000 g/fish). The microbial diversity in olive flounders arched from the juvenile and subadult stage and reached a plateau thereafter. The fish fed the FM30 diet significantly had an increased abundance of Lactobacillus and Photobacterium and had less abundance of Prevotella and Paraprevotella than the control. However, the effect of dietary PPS was not significant on total microbial richness, indicating no negative effect as feed sources on the intestinal microbiota in olive flounder. These results indicate that the life stage of olive flounder is more important in modulating intestinal microbiota than is the diet. It could also be concluded that dietary PPS might be used as a potential fish meal alternative without any compromising effects on microbial diversity of olive flounder for long‐term feeding.
