Multidimensional chromatography using on-line coupled microcolumn size exclusion chromatography-capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for determination of polymer additives

Comparison of methods for quantitative analysis of additives in low-density polyethylene using supercritical fluid and enhanced solvent extraction

On-line supercritical fluid extraction-supercritical fluid chromatography (SFE-SFC) with cryogenic trapping was used to extract and separate five additives from a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) sample. A glass tube filled with glass wool afforded excellent collection efficiency for the extracted analytes. Additive spiked sand was employed to optimize the various parameters of the on-line SFE-SFC system. Calibration curves from the spiked sand studies for on-line SFE-SFC were obtained with good linearities for quantitation. Results obtained on additives in LDPE from on-line SFE-SFC were comparable to those from off-line SFE-HPLC and off-line enhanced solvent extraction (ESE)-HPLC for all additives except Irganox 1076. However, the precision obtained with on-line SFE-SFC was lower than that from off-line SFE-HPLC and off-line ESE-HPLC due to the small sample size employed in the on-line system. Considerable clean-up of the ESE extract was required prior to chromatographic analysis. On-line SFE-SFC minimized the sample handling and eliminated the use of organic solvent. Despite the lower than expected precision, the on-line SFE-SFC method for quantitation of polymer additives appears to be reliable and robust for application in routine quality control analysis.

Size-exclusion chromatography performed in capillaries. Studies by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry

Miniaturization of the chromatographic column led to increased sensitivity and shortened time of analysis. In our work we applied 300 microm I.D. capillaries packed with a novel stationary phase Superdex Peptide for the size-exclusion chromatography, capable of separating molecules within the mass range of 0.1-7 kDa. Here we proved that such capillary columns can operate effectively at high sensitivity. Several peptide mixtures were efficiently chromatographed and analyzed on line with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry as a detection technique. A CNBr peptide map, derived from human globin alpha subunit, was effectively separated using this method. These fragments are difficult to elute from the reversed-phase column at low pH, therefore, such approach can be considered as a complementary to other separation techniques, in particular for analyzing hydrophobic components and complex mixtures.

Evaluation of release of antioxidant from high density polyethylene by planar chromatography

Irganox 1330 (1,3,5-trimethyl-2,4,5-tris(3',5'-ditert-butyl)-4'-hydroxybenzyl)- benzene) (I), an alkylphenol compound used as antioxdiant in the production of high density polyethylene (HDPE), was the subject of this study. The quantity of I given up by polyethylene samples of different thickness to aqueous and lipophilic media simulating food was studied by planar chromatography (PC). The manner of antioxidant release was also investigated. The chromatographic method developed was found satisfactory for the quantification of I in the migration studies undertaken, and had quantification limits (12 ng/deposit) suitable for quality control of HDPE.

Clean-up of plasma extracts by gel permeation chromatography during analysis of isosorbide nitrates by capillary gas chromatography

This work describes how gel permeation chromatography (GPC) can be used for sample clean-up to reduce the fouling of the column in an automated on-column injector. The analytes were isolated from plasma together with the internal standard (isomannide dinitrate) by liquid-liquid extraction on Extrelut silica columns. The extracts were evaporated and reconstituted in tetrahydrofuran for separation of the analytes from non-volatile plasma components by GPC on a styrene-divinylbenzene column with 100 A pore size. A programmable autosampler with an additional three-way valve was used for injection and fraction collection. The molecular weight fraction between 100 and 700 a.m.u. was collected and transferred to the on-column autosampler for capillary gas chromatography on a 30-m column butt-connected to a 0.2-m pre-column. The pre-column was replaced after 50 sample injections. When the GPC purification was excluded from the work-up procedure a deposit of non-volatile components was formed at the injection zone of the pre-column which resulted in excessive peak-tailing after only five or six injections of plasma extract. The limit of determination was 0.2 ng/ml plasma for isosorbide dinitrate and 0.4 ng/ml for the mononitrates.
