A theoretical structural analysis of the factors that affect (1)J(NH), (1h)J(NH) and (2h)J(NN) in N-H...N hydrogen-bonded complexes

NMR Properties of the Cyanide Anion, a Quasisymmetric Two-Faced Hydrogen Bonding Acceptor

The isotopically enriched cyanide anion, (13C≡15N)−, has a great potential as the NMR probe of non-covalent interactions. However, hydrogen cyanide is highly toxic and can decompose explosively. It is therefore desirable to be able to theoretically estimate any valuable results of certain experiments in advance in order to carry out experimental studies only for the most suitable molecular systems. We report the effect of hydrogen bonding on NMR properties of 15N≡13CH···X and 13C≡15NH···X hydrogen bonding complexes in solution, where X = 19F, 15N, and O=31P, calculated at the ωB97XD/def2tzvp and the polarizable continuum model (PCM) approximations. In many cases, the isotropic 13C and 15N chemical shieldings of the cyanide anion are not the most informative NMR properties of such complexes. Instead, the anisotropy of these chemical shieldings and the values of scalar coupling constants, including those across hydrogen bonds, can be used to characterize the geometry of such complexes in solids and solutions. 1J(15N13C) strongly correlates with the length of the N≡C bond.

Calculation of 15N NMR chemical shifts: Recent advances and perspectives

Recent advances in computation of ¹⁵N NMR chemical shifts are reviewed, concentrating mainly on practical aspects of computational protocols and accuracy factors. The review includes the discussion of the level of theory, the choice of density functionals and basis sets together with taking into account solvent effects, rovibrational corrections and relativistic effects. Computational aspects of ¹⁵N NMR are illustrated for the series of neutral and protonated open-chain nitrogen-containing compounds and nitrogen heterocycles, coordination and intermolecular complexes.

NMR resonance splitting of urea in stretched hydrogels: proton exchange and (1)H/(2)H isotopologues

Urea at ∼12 M in concentrated gelatin gel, that was stretched, gave (1)H and (2)H NMR spectral splitting patterns that varied in a predictable way with changes in the relative proportions of (1)H2O and (2)H2O in the medium. This required consideration of the combinatorics of the two amide groups in urea that have a total of four protonation/deuteration sites giving rise to 16 different isotopologues, if all the atoms were separately identifiable. The rate constant that characterized the exchange of the protons with water was estimated by back-transformation analysis of 2D-EXSY spectra. There was no (1)H NMR spectral evidence that the chiral gelatin medium had caused in-equivalence in the protons bonded to each amide nitrogen atom. The spectral splitting patterns in (1)H and (2)H NMR spectra were accounted for by intra-molecular scalar and dipolar interactions, and quadrupolar interactions with the electric field gradients of the gelatin matrix, respectively.

Neutral alkaline-metal and alkaline-earth-metal derivatives of imidazole and benzimidazole

A theoretical study of the minima and connecting transition states of the neutral complexes formed by alkaline-metal and alkaline-earth-metal derivatives of imidazolate and benzimidazolate anions has been carried out using B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p), B3LYP/6-311+G(3df,2p), and G3B3 methods. Two and three nondegenerated minima and two and four TS structures have been identified for imidazole and benzimidazole derivatives, respectively. The most stable minima of the alkaline-metal derivatives of both systems correspond to the metal interacting with the imidazole ring, whereas in the alkaline-earth-metal derivatives, the preferred minima depend on the substituent. A remarkable feature of some minima is the fact that some of the metal-aromatic interactions follow the classical π-cation pattern, even though the global structure corresponds to a neutral salt, constituting a class of noncovalent interaction of great interest in the chemistry of aromatic and heterocyclic complexes. A CSD search has confirmed that the two bonding modes, N-σ and π, are present in the solid phase. The π mode has been analyzed by comparison with other azoles.

15N-15N spin-spin coupling constants through intermolecular hydrogen bonds in the solid state

A 2hJNN intermolecular spin-spin coupling constant (SSCC) of 10.2±0.4 Hz has been measured for the powdered tetrachlorogallate salt of pyridinium solvated by pyridine (pyridine-H+⋯pyridine cation 3). Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level reproduced this value and two others reported in the literature for 2hJ intermolecular SSCCs, which were measured for complexes in solution.
