Abstract
The testis of bamboo shark is characterized by diametric development leading to zonation architecture. Here, we investigated the staining pattern of 12 lectins in 6 groups of differential binding specificities within the germ, somatic, and interstitial cells of each zone. The neutral mucopolysaccharides appeared in the interstitial tissue in all the zones and became more significant in the spermatozoal–Sertoli cell junction. The cellular localization of the lectins varies in testicular zones and cell types. There was a gradual increase in glycosylation toward the degenerative zone. The increased intensity of most lectins in the interstitial cells indicates the association of glycoconjugates in their androgen-secreting activity. Statistical analyses showed a significant correlation between the groups of lectins and each lectin used, stronger response to lectins in the interstitial cells (ICs) than other cell types. Moreover, the response to glucosamine (GlcNAc), galactosamine (GalNAc), and fucose tended to be higher than glucose and galactose. Furthermore, the intensity of response was increased toward the degenerative zone. In addition, we can use peanut agglutinin (PNA) as an acrosomal marker in combination with other marker proteins for studying shark spermatogenesis. These findings refer to the crucial role of glycoconjugates in spermatogenesis in the bamboo shark testis.

Abstract
Lectin histochemistry is commonly used to characterize the pattern of glycoconjugates in cells and tissues. Recent studies show that alterations in these glycoconjugates are associated with the entry of cells into apoptosis. A widely used technique for the detection of apoptotic cell death is TUNEL. In this chapter, we study the sensitivity of both techniques to identify apoptotic cells in the testis of photo-inhibited Syrian hamster.

Abstract
Glycobiology is the study of complex carbohydrates in biological systems and represents a developing field of science that has made huge advances in the last half century. In fact, it combines all branches of biomedical research, revealing the vast and diverse forms of carbohydrate structures that exist in nature. Advances in structure determination have enabled scientists to study the function of complex carbohydrates in more depth and to determine the role that they play in a wide range of biological processes. Glycobiology research in marine systems has primarily focused on reproduction, in particular for what concern the chemical communication between the gametes. The current status of marine glycobiology is primarily descriptive, devoted to characterizing marine glycoconjugates with potential biomedical and biotechnological applications. In this review, we describe the current status of the glycobiology in the reproductive processes from gametogenesis to fertilization and embryo development of marine animals.

Abstract
SummaryThe cururu stingray Potamotrygon cf. histrix, a new and endemic Amazonian freshwater species, presents appropriate characteristics for fish keeping and is exploited from its natural environment. The present study identified the testicular structure and spermatogenesis of this species. Gonads from adult male specimens were dissected, fixed and processed for histological analysis. The testes were of testicular/epigonial type. The presence of germinal papillae was observed in the upper portion of organ with primordial germ cells and Sertoli cell precursors. The testis was lobular with zonal organization and cystic gametogenesis, with the occurrence of spermatoblasts. The Sertoli cells underwent morphological modifications over the course of gamete formation. The spermatozoids had long heads and were spiraled on their own axis. Information on the reproductive biology will serve as basis for studies on the reproduction and phylogeny of this peculiar group of cartilaginous fish.

Abstract
We investigated the presence of cadherins, Ca++ dependent cell-cell adhesion molecules, during the development and maturation of cysts in the testis of the spotted ray Torpedo marmorata. Using different anti-cadherin antibodies, we provide evidence by means of immunohistochemistry and immunoblotting that cadherins are involved in the interaction between Sertoli and germ cells. During the development and maturation of cysts, in fact, cadherins occur between Sertoli and germ cells when they begin to interact to build a cyst. Later on, the presence of cadherins between Sertoli and germ cells persists; furthermore, during the formation of spermatoblast, it is also evident at the level of indentations, arising from Sertoli cells and encompassing germ cells. Finally, the present findings strongly suggest that cadherins are also involved in the spermiogenesis as germ cells, when male gamete differentiation starts, are intensively stained, while, when spermiation is completed, the spermatozoa appear unlabeled.
