Low-cost MRI System for Teaching

Magnetic resonance imaging instrumentation is taught at Texas A&M University through the ECEN 463 course and its graduate level equivalent. This class guides students through several labs where they design their own desktop MRI system using various hardware components and LabVIEW. Because the system uses professional grade equipment, the cost of each lab station is high. As a result, there are only four lab stations available, which limits the class to 32 students. The equipment also contains parts that have become obsolete, inhibiting the ability to maintain the system long term. This project focuses on using easily accessible and more affordable equipment for the MRI system. It can also potentially provide opportunities for remote learning, where students could work on assignments off-campus. Other projects have aimed to design low-cost MRI systems with an emphasis on clinical applications or which require advanced FPGA programming skills or pre-programmed modules. This project will develop the MRI instrumentation with updated off-the-shelf components. The current equipment will be replaced with two Analog Discovery 2 devices, which are low-cost teaching tools. It will also feature inexpensive transmit and receive chains, off-the-shelf gradient amplifiers suitable for teaching, gradient coils for signal localization, and a lighter-weight Halbach magnet. In this stage of the project, projections and images have been captured using a 0.06T permanent magnet. In addition to validating successful system operation, each lab of the course will be integrated with current materials to comply with the new equipment. Hardware and software resources will also be prepared and scaled to meet classroom needs and ensure a smooth transition. The goal of the project is to use the new system starting in the fall 2023 semester.Clinical Relevance- This project shows that low-cost equipment can be implemented into a working MRI system. The intent for this project may be educationally focused, but it shows that extremely light and low-cost systems can be created. It may be reconstructed to have a deployable system that could be used in the field.

Three-dimensional MRI in a homogenous 27 cm diameter bore Halbach array magnet

Modern clinical MRI systems utilise very high magnetic fields strengths to produce high resolution images of the human body. The high up-front and maintenance cost of these systems means that much of the world lacks access to this technology. In this paper we propose a low cost, head-only, homogenous Halbach magnet array with the potential for paediatric neuroimaging in low-resource settings. The homogeneity of the Halbach array is improved by allowing the diameter of the Halbach array to vary along its length, and also adding smaller internal shim magnets. The constructed magnet has a bore diameter of 27 cm, mean B₀ field strength of 50.4 mT and a homogeneity of 2400 ppm over a 20 cm diameter spherical volume. The level of homogeneity of the system means that coil-based gradients can be used for spatial encoding which greatly increases the flexibility in image acquisition. 3D images of a "brain phantom" were acquired over a 22 × 22 × 22 cm field of view with a 3.5 mm isotropic resolution using a spin-echo sequence. Future development of a low-cost gradient amplifier and an open-source spectrometer has the potential of offering a fully open-source, low-cost MRI system for paediatric neuroimaging in low-resource settings.

Multi-coil magnetic field modeling

The performance of multi-coil (MC) magnetic field modeling is compared to dedicated wire patterns for the generation of spherical harmonic (SH) shapes as these are the workhorse for spatial encoding and magnetic field homogenization in MR imaging and spectroscopy. To this end, an example 48 channel MC setup is analyzed and shown to be capable of generating all first through fourth order SH shapes over small and large regions-of-interest relevant for MR investigations. The MC efficiency for the generation of linear gradient fields shares the same order of magnitude with classic and state-of-the-art SH gradient coils. MC field modeling becomes progressively more efficient with the synthesis of more complex field shapes that require the combination of multiple SH terms. The possibility of a region-specific optimization of both magnetic field shapes and generation performance with the MC approach are discussed with emphasis on the possible trade-off between the field accuracy and generation efficiency. MC shimming has been shown previously to outperform current SH shimming. Along with the efficiency gains of MC shimming shown here, the MC concept has the potential to (1) replace conventional shim systems that are based on sets of dedicated SH coils and (2) allow optimal object-specific shim solutions similar to object-specific RF coils.

Design and fabrication of a three-axis multilayer gradient coil for magnetic resonance microscopy of mice

There is great interest in the non-destructive capabilities of magnetic resonance microscopy for studying murine models of both disease and normal function; however, these studies place extreme demands on the MR hardware, most notably the gradient field system. We designed, using constrained current minimum inductance methods, and fabricated a complete, unshielded three-axis gradient coil set that utilizes interleaved, multilayer axes to achieve maximum gradient strengths of over 2000 mT m(-1) in rise times of less than 50 micros with an inner coil diameter of 5 cm. The coil was wire-wound using a rectangular wire that minimizes the deposited power for a given gradient efficiency. Water cooling was also incorporated into the coil to assist in thermal management. The duty cycle for the most extreme cases of single shot echo planar imaging (EPI) is limited by the thermal response and expressions for maximum rates of image collection are given for burst and continuous modes of operation. The final coil is capable of the collection of single shot EPI images with 6 mm field of view and 94 microm isotropic voxels at imaging rates exceeding 50 s(-1).

Practical design of a high-strength breast gradient coil

A high-strength three-axis local gradient coil set was constructed for MRI of the breast. Gradient fields with good uniformity (<10% deviation from the desired gradient) over most of the volume required for breast imaging were generated with efficiencies of up to 3.3 mT/m/A. The coils will allow diffusion breast imaging in clinically acceptable examination times. The electrical design, water cooling system, and fabrication techniques are described. Preliminary tests of the coil included images of a grid phantom and diffusion measurements in a short-T2 agarose gel phantom.

Improved MR images of arterial specimens by submersion in trichlorotrifluoroethane

MR images of ex vivo arterial specimens immersed in 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane (R-113) have improved signal-to-noise ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio. R-113 has no hydrogen atoms, so it yields no proton signal; hence, the contrast between the specimen and its background is maximized. SNR is maximized because (i) R-113 is nonconductive so that coil loading and inductive noise are minimized, and (ii) the volume susceptibility of R-113 closely matches that of water and tissue so that T2* effects are minimized. Short-term submersion of porcine aortas in R-113 was found to have no significant effect on the artery's hydration level, relaxation time, tensile strength, and structure or quantity of elastin, collagen, or smooth muscle cells.

A novel transverse gradient coil design for high-resolution MR imaging

The authors describe a new gradient coil design for high resolution human, animal, specimen, or phantom imaging with high gradient efficiency and a large region of excellent gradient uniformity. Important features of our new design are the simple analytical description of the wire patterns that comprise the design, and ease of construction. Wires are spaced in a sinusoidal distribution around the circumference of the cylinder, and curved in an arcsin shape along the length of the cylinder. This coil produces a magnetic field pointing in a direction transverse to the axis of the coil with a gradient in the direction parallel to the axis of the coil. The same arcsin coil can be used to create a magnetic field pointing in a direction parallel to its axis with a gradient in a direction perpendicular to the coil axis. A prototype coil was constructed; field and inductance calculations were verified. Geometric variations on this coil design were modeled and their performance characteristics compared. This coil design is ideal for rapid implementation of a transverse gradient coil, since no specialized design software is required.

MR gradient coil heat dissipation

The temperature responses of five different gradient coil designs were modeled using simplified engineering equations and measured. The model predicts that the coil temperature approaches a maximum as an inverse exponential, where the maximum temperature is governed by two parameters: a local power density and a cooling term. The power density term is a function of position and is highest where the current paths have minimum widths and are closely packed. The cooling parameter consists of convective, conductive, and radiative components which can be controlled by (1) providing forced cooling, (2) having a coil former with high thermal conductivity and thin walls, and (3) varying the emissivity of the coil surfaces. For a given gradient strength, the average temperature rise is minimized by designing a coil with a small radius and thick copper. The model predicted the local temperature rise, which is also dependent on the current density, to within 5 degrees C of measured values.
