Combining prospective and retrospective motion correction based on a model for fast continuous motion

Prospective 3D Fat Navigator (FatNav) motion correction for 7T Terra MRI

Ultra-high field (7T) MRI allows scans at sub-millimetre resolution with exquisite signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). As 7T MRI becomes more widely used clinically, the challenge of patient motion must be overcome. Retrospective motion correction is used successfully for some protocols, but for acquisitions such as slice-by-slice scans only prospective motion correction can deliver the full potential of 7T MRI. We report the first implementation of prospective 3D Fat Navigator ("FatNav") motion correction for the Siemens 7T Terra MRI. We implemented a modular Sequence Building Block for FatNav and embedded it into the vendor's gradient-recalled echo (GRE) sequence. We modified the reconstruction pipeline to reconstruct FatNav images online, coregistering them and sending motion updates to the host sequence online. We tested five registration algorithms for performance and accuracy on synthetic FatNav data. We implemented the best three of these in our sequence and tested them online. We acquired T1 and T2* weighted brain images of healthy volunteers correcting every other image for motion to visualise the effectiveness of online motion correction. Data were acquired with and without head immobilisation. We also tested performance while correcting every measurement for motion. Our implementation uses a 1.23 s 3D FatNav acquisition module and delivers motion updates in less than 3 s, which is sufficient for motion updates every few k-space lines in typical scans. Corrected images are crisper with fewer visible motion artefacts. This improved sharpness is reflected quantitatively by an increase in the variance of the image Laplacian which is 1.59 x better for corrected vs uncorrected images. Profiles across the cerebral falx are 33% steeper for corrected vs uncorrected images. Prospective FatNav improves GRE image quality in the brain. Our modular Sequence Building Block provides a simple method to integrate motion correction in 7T MRI pulse sequences.

Body mass index associated with respiration predicts motion in resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans

Decreasing body mass index (BMI) reduces head motion in resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) data. Yet, the mechanism by which BMI affects head motion remains poorly understood. Understanding how BMI interacts with respiration to affect head motion can improve head motion reduction strategies. A total of 254 patients with back pain were included in this study, each of whom had two visits (interval time = 13.85 ± 7.81 weeks) during which two consecutive re-fMRI scans were obtained. We investigated the relationships between head motion and demographic and pain-related characteristics-head motion was reliable across scans and correlated with age, pain intensity, and BMI. Multiple linear regression models determined that BMI was the main determinant in predicting head motion. BMI was also associated with two features derived from respiration signal. Anterior-posterior and superior-inferior motion dominated both overall motion magnitude and the coupling between motion and respiration. BMI interacted with respiration to influence motion only in the pitch dimension. These findings indicate that BMI should be a critical parameter in both study designs and analyses of fMRI data.

External Hardware and Sensors, for Improved MRI

Complex engineered systems are often equipped with suites of sensors and ancillary devices that monitor their performance and maintenance needs. MRI scanners are no different in this regard. Some of the ancillary devices available to support MRI equipment, the ones of particular interest here, have the distinction of actually participating in the image acquisition process itself. Most commonly, such devices are used to monitor physiological motion or variations in the scanner's imaging fields, allowing the imaging and/or reconstruction process to adapt as imaging conditions change. "Classic" examples include electrocardiography (ECG) leads and respiratory bellows to monitor cardiac and respiratory motion, which have been standard equipment in scan rooms since the early days of MRI. Since then, many additional sensors and devices have been proposed to support MRI acquisitions. The main physical properties that they measure may be primarily "mechanical" (eg acceleration, speed, and torque), "acoustic" (sound and ultrasound), "optical" (light and infrared), or "electromagnetic" in nature. A review of these ancillary devices, as currently available in clinical and research settings, is presented here. In our opinion, these devices are not in competition with each other: as long as they provide useful and unique information, do not interfere with each other and are not prohibitively cumbersome to use, they might find their proper place in future suites of sensors. In time, MRI acquisitions will likely include a plurality of complementary signals. A little like the microbiome that provides genetic diversity to organisms, these devices can provide signal diversity to MRI acquisitions and enrich measurements. Machine-learning (ML) algorithms are well suited at combining diverse input signals toward coherent outputs, and they could make use of all such information toward improved MRI capabilities.
