Abstract
PURPOSE One of the most severe complications in surgery of parotid tumors is facial palsy. Imaging of the intra-parotid facial nerve is challenging due to small dimensions. Our aim was to assess, in patients with parotid tumors, the ability of high-resolution 3D double-echo steady-state sequence with water excitation (DE3D-WE) (1) to visualize the extracranial facial nerve and its tracts, (2) to evaluate their relationship to the parotid lesion and (3) to compare MRI and surgical findings. METHODS A retrospective study was conducted including all patients with parotid tumors, who underwent MRI from April 2022 to December 2023. Two radiologists independently reviewed DE3D-WE images, assessing quality of visualization of the facial nerve bilaterally and localizing the nerve's divisions in relation to the tumor. MRI data were compared with surgical findings. RESULTS Forty consecutive patients were included (M:F = 22:18; mean age 56.3 ± 17.4 years). DE3D-WE could excellently visualize the nerve main trunk and the temporofacial division in all cases. The cervicofacial branch was visible in 99% of cases and visibility was good. Distal divisions were displayed in 34% of cases with a higher visibility on the tumor side (p < 0.05). Interrater agreement was high (weighted kappa 0.94 ± 0.01 [95% CI 0.92-0.97]). Compared to surgery accuracy of MRI in localizing the nerve was 100% for the main trunk, 96% for the temporofacial and 89% for the cervicofacial branches. CONCLUSIONS Facial nerve MR-neurography represents a reliable tool. DE3D-WE can play an important role in surgical planning of patients with parotid tumors, reducing the risk of nerve injury.

Abstract
Electrodiagnostic studies, including nerve conduction study and electromyography, were conducted based on surface anatomy in a conventional manner. However, the anatomical variations and difficulty in the identification of target nerves or muscles render the accuracy of electrodiagnostic studies questionable. In recent years, high-resolution ultrasound (US) has been used to scan both the peripheral nerves and musculoskeletal system. Furthermore, an increasing number of clinicians have incorporated US into electrodiagnostic studies to achieve accurate sampling and prevent potential unwanted tissue injuries. In this review article, we present summarized information about the utility of US in assisting electrodiagnostic studies.

Abstract
The facial and submental regions are supplied by complicated neurovascular networks; therefore, facial aesthetic injections may be associated with serious adverse events such as skin necrosis and blindness. Pre-injection localization of neurovascular structures using high-resolution ultrasound can theoretically prevent unexpected complications. Therefore, a systematic protocol that focuses on these facial neurovascular structures is warranted. In this pictorial essay, we discuss the sonoanatomy of facial and submental neurovascular structures and its relevance to aesthetic injections. Moreover, we have highlighted the mechanisms underlying potential neurovascular injuries during aesthetic injections.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION/AIMS Ultrasonography of the cranial nerves has recently gained attention in assessing inflammatory, compressive or degenerative neuropathies. However, sonographic reference values of cranial nerves have received less attention than those of peripheral nerves. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to provide current evidence of sonographic reference values for cranial nerve size. METHODS By searching Medline (via PubMed), Scopus, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and Web of Science, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies that reported ultrasound measurements of the facial, spinal accessory, and hypoglossal nerves in healthy adults. We included studies that reported either the sonographic cross-sectional area (CSA) or the nerve diameter; the included nerves were sub-grouped according to the site of nerve measurement. RESULTS Fourteen studies with a total of 661 participants and 1437 ultrasound nerve measurements met the inclusion criteria. The anatomical sites for each nerve were combined to provide single nerve mean measurements. We found an overall mean nerve diameter of 0.80 mm for the facial nerve, 0.63 mm for the spinal accessory nerve, and 1.82 mm2 for the hypoglossal nerve CSA. DISCUSSION This meta-analysis provides reference values for the diameter and cross-sectional area of the facial, spinal accessory, and hypoglossal nerves at different sites, which can be used as guidance in clinical practice to detect pathological changes in cranial nerve size in cranial neuropathies. We recommend further validation in large-scale studies as well as standardization of the scanning protocols.

Abstract
Background Enlargement of the major salivary glands (SGs) is a major risk factor for B-cell lymphoma among patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS). Ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy (US-guided CNB) could be a novel technique to manage SG enlargement among patients with pSS. Objective Accordingly, this study’s main aim was to evaluate the safety, patient tolerance and diagnostic accuracy of US-guided CNB procedure for patients with pSS with major SG enlargement. Methods Patients with clinical diagnosis of pSS and a clinical indication for SG biopsy consecutively underwent US-guided CNB between September 2019 and June 2021. These patients were evaluated clinically 1, 2 and 12 weeks after US-guided CNB. Patients were asked to complete a questionnaire about postprocedural complications as well as periprocedural pain, using the Visual Analogue Scale. Complications were categorised as transient (<12 weeks) or persistent (≥12 weeks). Results US-guided CNB was performed on 30 major salivary glands (22 parotid glands and 8 submandibular glands). The procedure was well tolerated. Transient complications—such as haematoma, swelling—were observed among 43% of patients, and mean periprocedural pain was low. However, no persistent complications were reported during the study’s follow-up period. Conclusion US-guided CNB represents a novel approach for the management of patients with pSS with SG enlargement. The procedure showed remarkable patient safety and tolerance, allowing adequate glandular sampling and a definite diagnosis for almost all participating patients without long-term complications.

Abstract
Magnetic resonance neurography allows for the selective visualization of peripheral nerves and is increasingly being investigated. Whereas in the past, the imaging of the extracranial cranial and occipital nerve branches was inadequate, more and more techniques are now available that do allow nerve imaging. This basic review provides an overview of the literature with current state of the art, anatomical landmarks and future perspectives. Furthermore, we illustrate the possibilities of the three-dimensional CRAnial Nerve Imaging (3D CRANI) MR-sequence by means of a few case studies.

Abstract
Imaging of the intraparotid course of the facial nerve remains a challenge and is not an established routine procedure. The aim of this study was to evaluate ultrasound in localizing a parotid tumor in relation to the facial nerve. The ultrasound findings and operative reports of all patients treated for parotid gland tumors were studied retrospectively. Eight hundred sixty-eight parotid lesions formed our study sample. The unit of measurement was the minimal distance between the parotideomasseteric fascia and the superficial capsule of the tumor, measured in millimeters by means of ultrasound. The mean value for this parameter was 1.3 mm for superficial and 4.6 mm for deep lobe tumors (p < 0.001). When the cutoff value was set at 2.6 mm, the sensitivity and specificity of ultrasound were 89.6 and 88.4%, respectively. Our study revealed that ultrasound can help in the pre-operative differentiation between tumors of the superficial and deep lobes of the parotid gland.

Abstract
AIM To find the correlation between neurophysiological and neurosonographic (NSG) parameters of the facial nerve of children with idiopathic neuropathy of the facial nerve (NLN) in the acute period with good and poor prognosis of recovery of facial nerve function. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty-five children with NLN (mean age 11.5±4.9 years) and 57 children of control group (mean age 12.5±5.2 years) were examined. All children with NLN were studied using NSG with the measurement of the diameter of the facial nerve in the area of processus stylomastoideus and in the parotid gland. Stimulation electroneuromyography of the facial nerve with the registration of the M-response from the m. orbicularis oculi and evaluation of the degree of paresis of facial muscles using the 6-point House-Brackmann scale on the 10-15 day were performed. On the 30th day after manifestation of paresis, children with NLN were divided into two groups: the good recovery group 1 (n=54) and the poor prognosis recovery group (n=11). Correlation between NSG and electroneuromyography indicators with good and poor prognosis of recovery of facial nerve function was analyzed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION Based on the results obtained, 85% sensitivity and 77% specificity of measuring the diameter of the facial nerve using NSG in predicting poor prognosis of recovery of facial nerve function was shown. Normative and thresholds NSG parameters of the facial nerve in children were obtained.

Abstract
Background Facial nerve damage during head and neck surgery has long been an important issue. However, few publications on the gross anatomy of the facial nerve are available in the young population. The aim of this study was to provide in vivo measurements of the facial nerve trunk during lymphatic malformation (LM) resection and to determine the association between the trunk width and patient- and disease-related variables. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of 11 consecutive pediatric patients (11 facial nerve trunks) who underwent cervicofacial LM resection. The facial nerve of the affected side was dissected, and its trunk width at bifurcation was measured using calipers under a microscope during the operation. Results Eleven patients younger than 6 years were enrolled. The median width of the facial nerve in patients younger than 1 year was 1.15 mm; it was 2.5 mm in those older than 1 year. Trunk width was significantly greater in patients older than 1 year than those younger than 1 year, whereas no statistical significance was found when comparing other age groups. Patient weight was positively correlated with trunk width, whereas LM grade and diameter showed no significant correlation. Conclusions The significantly greater width of the facial nerve trunk in LM patients older than 1 year than those younger than 1 year suggests that the age of 1 may be a threshold for facial nerve hypertrophy and growth acceleration. This study provides informative in vivo data to help understand facial nerve characteristics in young patients.
