The Significance of Religion and Spirituality Among Turkish Women Surviving Breast Cancer Without Treatment: A Qualitative Study

The health of breast cancer survivors is a global concern. It is crucial to adopt a holistic approach when understanding their journey from illness to wellness in order to ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible. This study focused on the experiences of Muslim women who had overcome breast cancer and were adapting to life post-treatment. Snowball sampling was used to select the participants for this qualitative study. Fifteen women who had successfully completed breast cancer treatment and been declared cancer-free were interviewed. These interviews were semi-structured, using open-ended questions to explore their experiences in-depth. The interviews were conducted by phone, and the data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The study identified four main themes, nine subthemes, and 41 codes. The main themes were as follows: (a) a life changed by cancer and the difficulties encountered; (b) transition from active treatment to treatment-free living; (c) coping mechanisms; and (d) future hopes and expectations. The findings highlighted the survivors' desire to move past their experience of cancer and normalize their lives, as well as emphasizing their need for support. The participants shared detailed accounts of their journey, the obstacles they encountered during this transition, and the critical role of religion and spirituality in overcoming these challenges. Understanding and effectively managing the experiences of women after breast cancer treatment is vital not only for improving survival rates but also for facilitating their healing process.

Women's decision process when actively choosing to 'go flat' after breast cancer: a constructivist grounded theory study

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to describe a conceptual model that could illuminate the decision process women go through when choosing to go flat on one or both sides due to breast cancer.

METHODS

A qualitative design, with constructivist grounded theory was used. Eighteen women were individually interviewed, digitally or by telephone, until saturation was reached. Data were analysed using a constant comparative iterative method in accordance with grounded theory. By examining the text data to identify the decision process for going flat and rejecting reconstructive surgery open coding was obtained. As the study proceeded patterns were explored and categories developed into a core category.

RESULTS

The overall decision process for women choosing to go flat on one or both sides emerged in three phases: Phase 1, where the women are forced to "Face the cancer", Phase 2 comprising "Reflections on health and motivation" and Phase 3, described as "Hobson's choice". The fundament of the decision process was found in the core category "Establishing and safeguarding the chosen self".

CONCLUSIONS

The decision process involved in actively going flat and rejecting reconstructive surgery is founded in the individual woman's motivations, such as view of femininity and apprehensions about the offered reconstructive surgery.

Apoyo organizacional percibido y comportamientos de empoderamiento en mujeres supervivientes de cáncer de mama reincorporadas laboralmente

OBJETIVO

evaluar el apoyo organizacional percibido y los comportamientos de empoderamiento en mujeres sobrevivientes de cáncer de mama, activas laboralmente, en un centro de referencia oncológico.

MÉTODOS

estudio descriptivo en el que se recolectaron datos sobre las características sociodemográficas, laborales, clínicas, las secuelas del tratamiento, los comportamientos de empoderamiento y la percepción del apoyo organizacional.

RESULTADOS

Cerca del 90% de las mujeres conservó el trabajo anterior al diagnóstico. El 69% reportó que sus ingresos se mantuvieron iguales. La mayoría de las mujeres participantes percibieron bajo apoyo organizacional, y este cambia según la presencia de algunas secuelas del tratamiento. El 49.6% de las participantes había adoptado totalmente comportamientos de empoderamiento que varían significativamente de acuerdo con la edad, la presencia de secuelas, el apoyo organizacional percibido y el tiempo de retorno al trabajo.

CONCLUSIÓN

Las secuelas del tratamiento tienen influencia sobre el apoyo organizacional percibido y la adopción de comportamientos de empoderamiento.

A qualitative study on the experience of empowerment from the perspectives of breast cancer survivors

AIM

To describe the experience of empowerment for breast cancer survivors in order to increase quality of life after treatment.

DESIGN

We adopted a qualitative design in this study.

METHODS

A qualitative descriptive approach guided by interpretive description methodology as the theoretical framework was used in this study. Semi-structured group and individual interviews were conducted with eleven female Chinese breast cancer survivors (mean age 54.18 years, 100% female).

RESULTS

Many survivors reported that they continued to experience disease-related discomfort from the physiological aspect, but they use multiple ways to improve quality of life. Breast cancer survivors experienced empowerment after treatment. Empowerment mainly required three components: a belief in good health, capability of self-management and acquisition of a good social support system.
