The mediating effects of social support on the influencing relationship between grit and academic burnout of the nursing students

"I Refuse to Wear a Mask!" Examining the Relationship Between Grit and Preventative Behaviors and Well-Being: Mediating Role of Motivation

Despite government mandates to wear face masks in some public locations, why do some people still refuse to wear a face mask in public? This paper examines the relationship between grit, COVID-19 preventative health measure, and distress. Further, the mediating role of COVID-19 autonomous and controlled motivation is also investigated. The results suggest that grit is directly related to decreased distress and increased preventative behaviors. COVID-19 autonomous and controlled motivated mediated the relationship between grit, distress and preventive behaviors, such that COVID-19 autonomous motivation mediated the association between grit and preventive behaviors; while COVID-19 controlled motivation mediated the relationship between grit and psychological distress. These findings suggest that grit can be an important growth mindset in increasing preventative behaviors and individual well-being during the pandemic. Implications for human resource managers in attempting to help employees cope effectively during the pandemic are discussed.

[Concept Analysis of Social Intelligence of Nurses Using Hybrid Model]

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to conduct a concept analysis of social intelligence in nurses so that applying social intelligence to the nursing field.

METHODS

In this study, we followed the hybrid model procedure, involving the following steps: First, in the theoretical stage, the attributes and definitions of the concept of social intelligence were determined through literature review. Second, the concepts' reality was confirmed during fieldwork. In the final analysis stage, the results confirmed in the theoretical and fieldwork stages were compared and analyzed to confirm the properties and definition of the concept.

RESULTS

Nurses' social intelligence consists of three dimensions: social cognitive nursing competency, human-centered social evolution, and skills for solving complex nursing situations. Nurses' social intelligence is a professional nursing competency that flexibly coordinates complex nursing situations, developed through accumulating experiences of continuous reflection and relationship expansion based on receptive listening and social sensitivity in clinical interpersonal relationships.

CONCLUSION

Nurses' social intelligence is widely used in clinical practice and is shown to have a significant direct and indirect impact on clinical nursing. To effectively apply social intelligence in the clinical context, individual and organizational efforts are required to share and transfer knowledge and capacity-building methods through collective intelligence and education.

The impact of perceived work dirtiness on nursing students' professional commitment: the mediating role of career adaptability and the moderating role of social support - a cross sectional study

BACKGROUND

Social consensus in the nursing industry is that the job is accompanied by dirtiness. It is generally accepted that negative cognition about a career is an important determinant in reducing nursing students' professional commitment. However, the impact of nursing students' perceived work dirtiness on professional commitment and its mechanism remains unclear. This study aimed to analyze the association between perceived work dirtiness and professional commitment and to examine the mediating role of career adaptability and the moderating role of social support among nursing students in mainland China.

METHODS

A cross-sectional online study was conducted among 341 nursing students from three medical universities in Henan, China. The participants' perceived work dirtiness, career adaptability, professional commitment, and social support were obtained. SPSS 26.0 and Amos 23.0 software were used for the statistical analysis.

RESULTS

Perceived work dirtiness was negatively related to career adaptability and professional commitment (P < 0.001). Career adaptability played a partial mediating role (β= -0.177, P < 0.001) in the relationship between perceived work dirtiness and professional commitment. Social support played a moderating role (β = 0.134, P < 0.01) in the relationship between perceived work dirtiness and career adaptability. Moreover, social support moderates the mediating role of career adaptability.

CONCLUSIONS

Nursing students' perceived work dirtiness is an important factor in reducing professional commitment. Therefore, nursing educators must enhance courses focusing on professional qualities, providing avenues for nursing students to access social support. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the adverse impact of perceived work dirtiness on professional commitment among nursing students.

Clustering Undergraduate Students Based on Academic Burnout and Satisfaction from the Field Using Partitioning around Medoid

Background

Academic satisfaction is known as one of the most important factors in increasing students' efficiency, and academic burnout is one of the most significant challenges of the educational system, reducing student motivation and enthusiasm. Clustering methods try to categorize individuals into a number of homogenous groups.

Aims

To cluster undergraduate students at Shahrekord University of Medical Sciences based on academic burnout and satisfaction with their field of study.

Materials and Methods

The multistage cluster sampling method was used to select 400 undergraduate students from various fields in 2022. The data collection tool included a 15-item academic burnout questionnaire and a 7-item academic satisfaction questionnaire. The average silhouette index was used to estimate the number of optimal clusters. The NbClust package in R 4.2.1 software was used for clustering analysis based on the k-medoid approach.

Results

The mean score of academic satisfaction was 17.70 ± 5.39, while academic burnout averaged 37.90 ± 13.27. The optimal number of clusters was estimated at two based on the average silhouette index. The first cluster included 221 students, and the second cluster included 179 students. Students in the second cluster had higher levels of academic burnout than the first cluster.

Conclusion

It is suggested that university officials take measures to reduce the level of academic burnout through academic burnout training workshops led by consultants to promote the students' interests.
