Stress and anxiety in nursing students between individual and peer simulations

Psychological Distress, Academic Stress, and Burnout among Saudi Undergraduate Nursing Students

Background: There is limited evidence on the association between psychological distress, academic stress, and burnout among Saudi nursing students. Clarifying such an association is crucial to understanding the factors associated with psychological distress and developing interventions to prevent it. Aim: To explore the prevalence and association of psychological distress with academic stress and burnout among Saudi nursing students. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used, and 237 students participated from a nursing college in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Students' demographics; the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale; the Academic Stress Inventory; and the Maslach Burnout Inventory were used for data collection. Results: Most of the participants reported no-to-mild depression, anxiety, and stress. Stress related to studying in groups, time management, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment were the significant predictors of psychological distress, explaining 52.1% of the variance. Conclusions: This study suggest implementing tailored mental health screenings and support services for nursing students, embedding mental health professionals in the program, and using telehealth or mobile apps for remote monitoring to ensure comprehensive care for nursing students. Future research should consider these predictors while designing strategies to decrease psychological distress among students.

Evaluation of antenatal simulation-based learning on satisfaction and self-confidence levels among Thai undergraduate nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic: a mixed-method study

BACKGROUND

During the COVID-19 pandemic, simulation-based learning (SBL) serves as an alternative teaching strategy for nursing students facing restricted access to antenatal clinical practicum. However, the factors predicting nursing students' satisfaction, self-confidence, and their learning experiences remain unclear.

OBJECTIVE

To identify factors predict satisfaction and self-confidence and explore the learning experiences of antenatal SBL.

METHODS

A Mixed methods research of the cross-sectional study design and descriptive qualitative research was conducted. A total of 100 third year nursing students who finished the Maternity-Newborn Nursing and Midwifery Practice course using antenatal simulation-based learning were invited to complete the online questionnaires. A total of seven questionnaires were administered, including a demographic questionnaire, the Attitude Scale toward Simulation-Based Education (SBE), the Professional Identity Scale for Nursing Students, the Perceived Stress Scale, the Evaluation of Teaching Competencies Scale, the Simulation Design Scale: Student Version, and the Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Learning. The 20 nursing students who completed survey were asked to participate a qualitative focus group discussion. Multiple regression analysis was performed to investigate predictors, while qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis.

RESULTS

The quantitative results showed high levels of satisfaction (mean = 20.55, SD = 3.17) and self-confidence (mean = 32.44, SD = 4.76) after completing the antenatal SBL. In regression analysis, attitude toward SBE (Beta = 0.473, t = 5.376, p < 0.001) and attitude toward antenatal care simulation design (Beta = 0.338, t = 2.611, p < 0.011) were significantly associated with a high level of satisfaction with antenatal SBL, which accounted for 44.0% of the variance explained in satisfaction. Only attitude toward SBE was significantly associated with a high level of self-confidence in antenatal SBL (Beta = 0.331, t = 3.773, p < 0.001), which accounted for 45.0% of the variance explained in self-confidence. The qualitative results generated four themes: (1) positive attitude toward antenatal simulation; (2) turning reassurance into confidence; (3) I am really happy to learn; and (4) being a good nurse motivates and stresses me.

CONCLUSIONS

Antenatal SBL is an effective teaching strategy that can support nursing students to build clinical confidence. Creating a positive learning environment allows students to have a positive attitude and experience with simulations.

Role of peer learning and self-efficacy in parasympathetic activity during the simulation learning process in nursing students

AIMS

This study aimed to investigate the stress level, including parasympathetic nervous activity, of students engaged in peer learning during simulations and the role of self-efficacy.

DESIGN

Observational-comparative study.

METHODS

The participants were 76 nursing students who were asked to evaluate a stable postoperative patient in Scene 1 and the same patient bleeding in Scene 2. In each scene, the students engaged in phases of repeated individual observations of the patient and discussions with peers. We compared each participant's parasympathetic activity during each observation in Scenes 1 and 2. Furthermore, the self-efficacy score before the simulation was used to divide the participants into 3 groups, and the self-efficacy and parasympathetic activity during the simulation were analysed.

RESULTS

The participants' parasympathetic activity decreased in both scenes with each phase of repeated observation. Two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance showed no statistically significant difference in parasympathetic activity during simulations among the three self-efficacy groups.

Nursing students' perceived stress, self-efficacy, control and evaluation of a course in systematic clinical observation, physical assessment and decision-making: An observational study in Norway

AIM

Simulation-based nursing education interventions have a strong educational effect on psychomotoric skills, but students may experience physiological stress and anxiety during simulation. The aims of this study were to explore (1) nursing students' perceived stress, self-efficacy, control and evaluation before and after simulation as part a structured course in physical assessment, (2) whether factors such as gender, age or previous work experience were associated with perceived stress during simulation and (3) nursing students evaluation of the course.

DESIGN

An observational, cross-sectional study before and after simulation and a course in physical assessment.

METHODS

We utilized "the Self-Assessment Manikin for measuring emotion" before and after simulation, a questionnaire to identify symptoms of stress after simulation, and a questionnaire to evaluate the physical assessment course.

RESULTS

A total of 59 students participated. Students perceived stress before simulation but reported a lower degree of activation, a more positive mood, increased feeling of control and self-efficacy after the simulation. They also felt more secure about their assessments. Even though students reported of several symptoms of stress before simluation, the course increased students' self-reported competence and feeling of security.

Clinical competence and self-efficacy of Lebanese and Saudi nursing students participating in simulation-based learning in nursing education

BACKGROUND

Simulation-based learning is a modern educational approach that allows students to recognize and practice what they've learned. Self-efficacy and perceived clinical competence allow nursing students to attain higher levels of performance and consequently higher quality of rendered care.

METHODS

This study employed a quantitative cross-sectional research design recruiting 302 Lebanese and Saudi senior nursing students.

RESULTS

The results have displayed moderately high levels of self-efficacy and perceived clinical competence among students who took part in simulation-based learning, where Saudi students presented higher perceived competence. A significant correlation was found between the variables where self-efficacy was a predictor of perceived clinical competence.

CONCLUSIONS

Lebanese and Saudi nursing seniors students who took part in simulation-based learning experiences had notable scores of self-efficacy and clinical competence.
