The effect of pain social support on kinesiophobia in older patients with rheumatoid arthritis: The mediating role of self-perceived burden

OBJECTIVES

This study would investigate the role of self-perceived burden in mediating the relationship between pain social support and kinesiophobia.

METHODS

A convenience sampling method was used to survey 386 older patients with rheumatoid arthritis in a hospital in Liaoning Province. They were surveyed using the general demographic questionnaire, pain social support scale (SPQ), self-perceived burden scale (SPBS), and tampa scale of kinesiophobia(TSK-11).

RESULTS

Pain social support had a negative correlation with kinesiophobia(r=-0.336, p < 0.01). The self-perceived burden was positively correlated with kinesiophobia(r = 0.583, p < 0.01). The mediating effect of self-perceived burden accounted for 43.40% of the total effect.

CONCLUSIONS

The study had shown the mediating role of self-perceived burden to be beneficial in reducing kinesiophobia in older rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Factors associated with kinesiophobia in Chinese older adults patients with osteoarthritis of the knee: A cross-sectional survey

OBJECTIVES

To identify important determinants of kinesiophobia in older adults with osteoarthritis of the knee bassed on demographics, social support and pain, and self-perceived burden factors.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey of 304 older adults patients with knee osteoarthritis from two hospitals in Jinzhou, Liaoning, China. General Demographic Questionnaire, the Social Support and Pain Scale (SPQ), the Self-Perceived Burden Scale (SPBS), and the Tampa Kinesiophobia Scale (TSK-11) were used to collect the data.

RESULTS

The results showed that the prevalence of kinesiophobia in older adults with osteoarthritis of the knee was 57.89%. Marital status, education, knowledge of the condition, pain level, SPQ, and SPBS levels were significant determinants of kinesiophobia, which together explained 43.2% of the variance.

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence of kinesiophobia in older adults with knee osteoarthritis is very high. Health care workers should take early intervention measures to improve social support and pain and reduce the self-perceived burden, thereby promoting recovery from disease.

Predictors of Perceived Family Sense of Coherence in Parents of Children with Cancer

Objectives:

Despite improvement in childhood cancer survival in recent decades, it is still an extremely challenging health condition for parents. The impacts of childhood cancer on the family as a whole are recently interested by researchers. Family coherence is one of these concepts and health-care providers need to understand the perception of parents of family coherence. This study aimed to assess the correlation between perceived family sense of coherence (SOC) in parents of children with cancer; with socio-demographic, psycho-emotional and family-related variables.

Materials and Methods:

This cross-sectional correlational study recruited 125 parents of children with cancer attending hospitals in Tehran in 2020, selected by convenience sampling method. The correlation between family SOC and demographic variables, chronic sorrow, coping behaviours, family functioning and social support was investigated using regression analysis.

Results:

The mean score perceived sense of family coherence in parents of children with cancer was higher in fathers (Beta = 0.17, P = 0.02), urban residents (beta = –0.2, P = 0.01) and homeowners (beta = –0.27, P = 0.001). The sense of family coherence had positive correlations with income grade (beta = 0.27, P = 0.006), coping behaviours (beta = 1.28, P = 0.002), social support (beta = 0.67, P = 0.001), negative correlations with the disturbance in family problem-solving (beta = –0.28, P = 0.006) and chronic sorrow (beta=-0.39, P = 0.001).

Conclusion:

The present study expanded the concept of family SOC in nursing knowledge and attracted the attention of the providers of family-centred care to the parents of children with cancer and their concerns, which directly and indirectly affect the entire family’s health.

Adolescent Resilience Profiles (on the Example of Adolescents with Congenital, Acquired Disabilities and Healthy Peers)

The problem of the research is important in the context of psychological assistance and interaction with adolescents with disabilities. The study aimed to carry out a comparative analysis of the resilience profiles of adolescents with congenital (cerebral palsy), acquired disabilities (oncology, rheumatic diseases) and healthy peers. The study involved 51 adolescents with cerebral palsy, 61 with oncological diseases, 51 with rheumatic diseases and 86 conditionally healthy adolescents aged 13 to 18 years old. In total it embraced 249 teenagers (mean age 14.94+1.48), of which 128 were male and 121 were female. There were used the following methods: the “Victimity” questionnaire (M.A. Odintsova, N.P. Radchikova), “Resilience Test” (E.N. Osin, E.I. Rasskazova) and “COPE” questionnaire (E.I. Rasskazova, T.O. Gordeeva, E.N. Osin). The study revealed significant differences in the resilience profiles of adolescents from different groups: healthy teenagers are mainly characterized by unstable and resilient profiles; adolescents with oncology and rheumatic diseases — by all three profiles; adolescents with cerebral palsy — by victim and unstable ones. The female part of the sample, unlike the male part, are characterized by unstable and victim profiles. The most significant differences in groups with different resilience profiles were found in coping strategies related to the dysfunctional coping style. The use of coping strategies: behavioral disengagement, mental disengagement, concentration on emotions and humor leads to a decrease in resilience in the boys of the entire sample. Concentration on emotions, behavioral disengagement, mental disengagement, and infrequent use of active coping are predictors of reduced resilience in girls.

Relationship between perceived social support and psychological hardiness with family communication patterns and quality of life of oncology patients

AIM

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between PSS, PH, FCP and QoL of oncology patients.

METHODS

In this descriptive-correlational study, 340 oncology patients were selected with convenience sampling method from the hospitals in Tehran 2018-2019. Data were collected using, "PSS," "PH," "FCP" and "European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire, EORTC QLQ-C30." Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS21 and Amos.

RESULTS

The direct effect and the total effect of PSS and FCP on QoL were significant (p < .001), but their indirect effect was not significant (p > .05) and the effect of PH on QoL was not significant (p = .96). The Root Mean Squares of Error Approximations (RMSEA), Non-Normed Fit Index (NNFI), Comparative Fit Index (CFI) and Goodness of Fit Index (GFI) were estimated 0.07, 0.97, 0.98 and 0.91, respectively.
