Professional quality of life, sleep disturbance and health among nurses: A mediation analysis

The association of calligraphy activities with peace of mind, stress self-management, and perceived health status in older adults

Introduction

Calligraphy, as a form of mindful practice, encourages focus, creativity, and relaxation, which collectively contribute to a more peaceful mental state. Through regular engagement in calligraphy, older adults can develop better coping mechanisms for stress, leading to more effective self-management of daily stressors. This enhanced ability to manage stress can reduce the overall burden on their mental and physical health, promoting a more positive outlook on life.

Methods

This study employed convenience sampling and snowball sampling to select 246 older adults aged 60-70 from Changsha, China, in March 2024 as valid samples. AMOS v.23 was used to construct a structural equation model to validate the hypotheses.

Results

The study found a significant positive correlation between calligraphy activities and peace of mind/stress self-management. There is also a significant positive correlation between peace of mind/stress self-management and perceived health status. Additionally, peace of mind and stress self-management act as mediators between calligraphy activities and perceived health status.

Discussion

This indicates that calligraphy activities not only contribute to the psychological well-being of older adults but also indirectly enhance their positive perception of their own health by improving their mental state. Consequently, such activities can be an integral part of holistic health interventions aimed at enhancing the quality of life and overall health of older adults.

Sexual difficulties in men who have sex with men living with HIV: their mental health and health-related quality of life

Background

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is gaining significance for people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), with sexual difficulties being a crucial yet frequently neglected component of HRQoL, especially in HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM).

Aim

The study sought to assess the levels of sexual difficulties and explore the associations between sexual difficulties, mental health, and HRQoL in HIV-positive MSM.

Methods

A cohort of 475 HIV-positive MSM was studied from January 2017 to December 2021. Sociodemographic, clinical, and lifestyle data were collected. Participants were divided based on Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (ASEX) scores into 2 groups: those with sexual difficulties and a control group without difficulties.

Outcomes

Psychological symptoms were evaluated by the Symptom Checklist-90 (SCL-90), HRQoL was accessed via 36-item Short Form Health Survey, and sexual function was assessed using the ASEX. We also employed path analysis to unveil latent mechanisms, alongside multivariate analysis to identify independent factors, and aimed to elucidate the interplay among sexual function, HRQoL, and mental health in HIV-positive MSM.

Results

A total of 391 HIV-positive MSM were enrolled in the control group and 84 in the sexual difficulties group. The control group had significantly higher physical HRQoL (P = .004) and mental HRQoL (P = .045). In addition, SCL-90 scores were higher in the sexual difficulties group (P = .001). Multivariate analyses that indicated regular exercise (odds ratio, 0.553; P = .024) and alcohol consumption (odds ratio, 1.780; P = .033) were independent factors associated with sexual difficulties. The proportion of alcohol consumption in the sexual difficulties group was significantly higher (P = .003). ASEX scores increased gradually with increasing frequency of alcohol consumption (P = .031). Results from structural equation model showed a negative association between HRQoL and ASEX scores (β = -0.13, P < .001) and SCL-90 scores (β = -0.40, P < .001).

Clinical Implications

HIV-positive MSM experiencing sexual difficulties exhibited lower HRQoL and worse mental health, with independent associations identified for regular exercise and alcohol consumption in relation to sexual difficulties.

Strengths and Limitations

Our research has pioneered in demonstrating that HRQoL mediates the relationship between sexual difficulties and psychological symptoms among HIV-positive MSM undergoing highly active antiretroviral therapy. We found the protective factor associated with sexual difficulties was regular exercise while the risk factor was alcohol consumption. However, the data were collected only from China, and it is still unclear how HRQoL changes after intervention.

Conclusion

Routine follow-up for people living with HIV should encompass an investigation into sexual function, emphasizing the need for timely assessment and intervention, particularly in HIV-positive MSM with identified risk factors.

The relationship between organizational support, professional quality of life, decent work, and professional well-being among nurses: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Nurses often face challenges such as inadequate welfare protection, injustice, and workplace adversity including violence, bullying, and sexual harassment. In this context, providing sufficient support to nurses is crucial for the promotion of their professional well-being. This study examines the direct and indirect effects of perceived organizational support on nurses' well-being, particularly highlighting the mediating roles of professional quality of life and the perception of decent work.

METHODS

A cross-sectional survey design was employed in this study. Convenience sampling was used to survey 792 nurses from five tertiary A-grade hospitals in Shanxi Province in January 2024. Data collection tools included a custom demographic survey, the Perceived Organizational Support Scale, Professional Quality of Life Scale, Decent Work Perception Scale, and Nurse Occupational Well-being Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and mediation effect analyses were performed.

RESULTS

The findings demonstrate that perceived organizational support has a direct impact on nurses' occupational well-being (β = 0.323, p < 0.001). Additionally, professional quality of life and the perception of decent work play chain mediating roles between perceived organizational support and nurses' well-being (β = 0.019, BootLLCI = 0.010, BootULCI = 0.030).

CONCLUSIONS

This study highlighted the importance of organizational support in enhancing nurses' well-being. Professional quality of life and decent work were key mediators. Healthcare institutions should prioritize support measures to improve nurses' well-being. Future research should explore additional mediators and mechanisms to develop effective strategies for nursing policymakers and administrators.

The Partial Mediator Role of Satisficing Decision-Making Style Between Trait Emotional Intelligence and Compassion Fatigue in Healthcare Professionals

Background: Compassion fatigue (CF) represents a relevant issue for healthcare professionals. Currently, it is still unclear which psychological mechanism might lead to CF and which might protect workers from that. Decision-making styles, as well as emotional intelligence, might partially account for the presence of CF. Specifically, we hypothesized that a satisficing decision-making style would mediate the relationship between emotional intelligence and CF.Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted on physicians and nurses from Italian Medical Departments. Three self-reported questionnaires were administered to collect data in accordance with our aims. A mediation model with Structural Equation Modeling on the relationship between trait emotional intelligence (TEI) and CF through the maximizing decision-making style was performed.Results: We found a significant relationship between TEI and CF (β = -0.28, SE = 0.04, p < .001). The maximizing style partially mediated this relationship (β = -0.04, SE = 0.01, p < .001). Moreover, negative relationships were found between sex (male), working hours, sleep quality, and CF. Conversely, a positive relationship between age and CF was demonstrated.Conclusions: Being emotionally intelligent resulted as a protective factor for developing CF, while the decision-making styles shaped the risk of developing CF.

Nurses quality of life, sleep disturbance, and intention to leave critical care units: A cross-sectional moderated mediation analysis

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to explore the complex relationships between personal and demographic factors, intermediary factors such as quality of life (depression, anxiety, stress, burnout), and the mediating impact of sleep disturbance on nurses' intention to leave critical care units.

DESIGN

Cross-sectional quantitative survey.

SETTING

Data were collected from registered nurses at a major university hospital in southern Italy. Seven inpatient critical care units were sampled.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Intention to leave critical care units.

RESULTS

We included 160 participants recruited over five weeks in May and June 2023. The data showed that most were female, married, and possessed a bachelor's degree in nursing. The mean quality of life score was moderate, while stress, anxiety, and burnout were mild. A significant percentage of nurses reported poor sleep quality. Logistic regression indicates that service length did not significantly impact the intention to leave. The structural equation model showed that stress positively correlated with emotional exhaustion, whereas job quality was negatively associated with emotional exhaustion and the intention to leave. Sleep disturbance did not explain the relationship between stress and emotional fatigue; however, the results revealed that male gender moderated sleep mediation.

CONCLUSIONS

This study investigated factors influencing intention to leave among critical care unit nurses. The results suggest that the role of sleep disturbance should always be considered when assessing the issue. In this chain of causes, sleep disturbance explains the relationship between stress and emotional exhaustion. Furthermore, the strength of this mediation was influenced by gender, particularly by the male gender.

IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE

Stress and emotional exhaustion significantly impact nurses' working quality of life, particularly when sleep quality is taken into account. This leads to a higher intention to leave critical care units. To reduce this tendency, healthcare managers could implement specific evidence-based interventions to promote a good climate of work, which would positively affect stress, emotional exhaustion and sleep disturbance. The likelihood of intention to leave decreased with achieving personal self-fulfilment among nurses.

The impact of night shift stress and sleep disturbance on nurses quality of life: case in Palestine Red Crescent and Al-Ahli Hospital

BACKGROUND

Nurses play a vital role in providing round-the-clock care to patients, but the challenges associated with working night shifts can have significant implications for their well-being and quality of life.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the impact of night shift stress and sleep disturbance on the quality of life among nurses working in Palestine Red Crescent Society and Al-Ahli Hospital. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 189 full-time registered nurses with at least one year of job experience. The participants completed a questionnaire assessing night shift stress, sleep disturbance, and quality of life. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and path analysis were conducted to analyze the data.

RESULTS

The results reveal that quality of life has positive and low relationship with both night shift stress and sleep disturbances. Results also reveal that night shift stress had a direct negative impact on the quality of life of nurses. Sleep disturbance was found to mediate the relationship between night shift stress and quality of life, indicating that higher levels of night shift stress were associated with increased sleep disturbance, which, in turn, led to poorer quality of life outcomes.

CONCLUSION

These findings highlight the importance of addressing night shift stress and sleep disturbance among nurses to enhance their well-being and improve the quality of care provided to patients. In conclusion, this study contributes to the existing literature by demonstrating the detrimental effects of night shift stress and sleep disturbance on the quality of life of nurses. It emphasizes the importance of implementing interventions and creating supportive work environments that address the unique challenges faced by nurses working night shifts.

Sleep Quality as a Mediator of Burnout, Stress and Multisite Musculoskeletal Pain in Healthcare Workers: A Longitudinal Study

This study aimed to verify whether sleep quality is a mediator of the relationship between burnout, stress and multisite pain in healthcare workers in a longitudinal study with 12 months of follow-up during the COVID-19 pandemic. Online questionnaires were used for data collection. The sociodemographic questionnaire contained personal and occupational data. The short version of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ II-Br) was used to assess burnout and stress. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-Br) assessed sleep quality over one month. The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) aimed to identify the presence of multisite musculoskeletal pain in the last 12 months and the last 7 days. Mediation analysis was used to verify whether the effect of the predictor variables (burnout and stress) on the dependent variable (number of pain sites in the last 12 months and 7 days) was due to an intervening variable (sleep quality). Stress and burnout were associated with multisite pain in healthcare workers in the last 12 months and the last 7 days. Sleep quality was a significant mediator of this association in the last 12 months, indicating that some of the association between burnout, stress and multisite pain can be explained by poor sleep quality. Thus, a comprehensive approach to long-term multisite pain should consider psychosocial aspects such as burnout, stress and sleep quality.

Resilience among nurses in long term care and rehabilitation settings

BACKGROUND

Nurses practicing in long-term care or rehabilitation settings face unique challenges from prolonged or repeated exposure to stressors, given their extended time with patients. This puts them at risk for compassion fatigue, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress, which can lead to decreased resilience and sleep problems.

AIM

The aim of this study was to examine relationships among resilience, professional quality of life, sleep, and demographics in nurses working in long-term care or rehabilitation settings, and to investigate whether demographics, professional quality of life, and sleep quality are significant predictors of nurses' resilience.

METHODS

In this cross-sectional study, we used the following measures: demographics, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Questionnaire, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Professional Quality of Life Scale (ProQOL). Data were analyzed with SPSS v25. Data analysis consisted of descriptive statistics, bivariate correlations, and multiple regression.

RESULTS

Participants (N = 120) were mostly female (85%) and registered nurses (90%). Mean scores were 52.13 for resilience and 7.53 for sleep quality. Mean ProQOL subscale scores were 41.78 for compassion satisfaction, 22.28 for compassion fatigue, and 23.92 for secondary traumatic stress. Multiple regression models showed that compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress significantly predicted resilience (β = 0.69, β = -0.61, and β = -0.34, respectively, all p < .05).

CONCLUSIONS

Resilience is important in nurses' personal and professional lives because it helps to protect nurses from the negative consequences of stressors. Strategies, resources, and workplace support can promote self-care and resilience.
