Internal energy deposition in doubly charged tungsten hexacarbonyl on low-energy Charge exchange with organic targets

The reduction of water clusters H+(H2O)n to (OH-)(H2O)m by double electron transfer from Cs atoms

(H(+))(H(2)O)(n) ions (n = 1-72) at 50 keV energies were brought to collide with caesium atoms. The analysis of the products formed for clusters having n > 4 shows that this leads to the formation of a population of (OH(-))(H(2)O)(m) ions with a variable number m. On average, more than half of the water molecules are lost from the cluster in the process. A model can explain the experimental observations where two successive collisions occur within a time period of less than 100 ns. One-electron transfer from caesium to water leading to the loss of one hydrogen atom occurs at each stage. While the first stage is by itself exothermic, the second stage requires additional energy from collisional energy transfer.

Investigation of energy deposited by femtosecond electron transfer in collisions using hydrated ion nanocalorimetry

Ion nanocalorimetry is used to investigate the internal energy deposited into M (2+)(H 2O) n , M = Mg ( n = 3-11) and Ca ( n = 3-33), upon 100 keV collisions with a Cs or Ne atom target gas. Dissociation occurs by loss of water molecules from the precursor (charge retention) or by capture of an electron to form a reduced precursor (charge reduction) that can dissociate either by loss of a H atom accompanied by water molecule loss or by exclusively loss of water molecules. Formation of bare CaOH (+) and Ca (+) by these two respective dissociation pathways occurs for clusters with n up to 33 and 17, respectively. From the threshold dissociation energies for the loss of water molecules from the reduced clusters, obtained from binding energies calculated using a discrete implementation of the Thomson liquid drop model and from quantum chemistry, estimates of the internal energy deposition can be obtained. These values can be used to establish a lower limit to the maximum and average energy deposition. Not taking into account effects of a kinetic shift, over 16 eV can be deposited into Ca (2+)(H 2O) 33, the minimum energy necessary to form bare CaOH (+) from the reduced precursor. The electron capture efficiency is at least a factor of 40 greater for collisions of Ca (2+)(H 2O) 9 with Cs than with Ne, reflecting the lower ionization energy of Cs (3.9 eV) compared to Ne (21.6 eV). The branching ratio of the two electron capture dissociation pathways differs significantly for these two target gases, but the distributions of water molecules lost from the reduced precursors are similar. These results suggest that the ionization energy of the target gas has a large effect on the electron capture efficiency, but relatively little effect on the internal energy deposited into the ion. However, the different branching ratios suggest that different electronic excited states may be accessed in the reduced precursor upon collisions with these two different target gases.

Differences between the internal energy depositions induced by collisional activation and by electron transfer of W(CO)6(2+) ions on collision with Ar and K targets

Doubly charged tungsten hexacarbonyl W(CO)(6) (2+) ions were made to collide with Ar and K targets to give singly and doubly charged positive ions by collision-induced dissociation (CID). The resulting ions were analyzed and detected by using a spherical electrostatic analyzer. Whereas the doubly charged fragment ions resulting from collisional activation (CA) were dominant with the Ar target, singly charged fragment ions resulting from electron transfer were dominant with the K target. The internal energy deposition in collisionally activated dissociation (CAD) evaluated with the Ar target was broad and decreased with increasing internal energy. The predominant peaks observed with the K target were associated with singly charged W(CO)(2) (+) and W(CO)(3) (+) ions: these ions were not the result of CA, but arose from dissociation induced by electron transfer (DIET). The internal energy deposition resulting from the electron transfer was very narrow and centered at a particular energy, 7.8 eV below the energy level of the W(CO)(6) (2+) ion. This narrow internal energy distribution was explained in terms of electron transfer by Landau-Zener potential crossing at a separation of 5.9 x 10(-8) cm between a W(CO)(6) (2+) ion and a K atom, and the coulombic repulsion between singly charged ions in the exit channel. A large cross section of 1.1 x 10(-14) cm(2) was estimated for electron capture of the doubly charged W(CO)(6) (2+) ion from the alkali metal target, whose ionization energy is very low. The term "collision-induced dissociation," taken literally, includes all dissociation processes induced by collision, and therefore encompasses both CAD and DIET processes in the present work. Although the terms CID and CAD have been defined similarly, we would like to propose that they should not be used interchangeably, on the basis that there are differences in the observed ions and in their intensities with Ar and K targets.

Translational to vibrational energy conversion during surface-induced dissociation of n-butylbenzene molecular ions colliding at self-assembled monolayer surfaces

Translational to vibrational (T-->V) energy conversion in the course of inelastic collisions of n-butylbenzene molecular ions with thiolate self-assembled monolayer (SAM) gold surfaces is studied to better understand internal energy uptake by the hyperthermal projectile ions. The projectile ion is selected by a mass spectrometer of BE configuration and product ions are analyzed using a quadrupole mass analyzer after kinetic energy selection with an electric sector. The branching ratio for formation of the fragment ions m/z 91 and m/z 92, measured over a range of collision energies, is used to estimate the average internal energy with the aid of calculations based on unimolecular dissociation kinetics [Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) theory]. The measured T-->V conversion efficiencies (the fraction of the laboratory kinetic energy converted into internal energy) are 11 approximately 12% for dodecanethiolate SAM (H-SAM) and 19 approximately 20% for 2-perfluorooctylethanethiolate SAM (F-SAM), respectively, over ranges of a few 10s of eV. The values are similar to those reported earlier for other thermometer molecules undergoing surface collisions. Chemical sputtering leading to ionization of the surface is a prominent feature of the surface-induced dissociation (SID) spectra of n-butylbenzene acquired using the H-SAM surface but not the F-SAM surface because of the lower ionization energy of the former.

Low-energy ion--surface reactions of pyrazine with two classes of self-assembled monolayers: influence of alkyl chain orientation

Collisions of pyrazine with two classes of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) films are employed to determine whether surface confinement and the resulting alkyl chain orientation, influences low-energy ion-surface reactions. SAM films formed from n-alkanethiols (CH3(CH2)n-S-Au, n = 14-17) and 4-(4-alkoxyphenylbenzenethiols (4-(4-CH3(CH2)mOC6H4)-C6H4-S-Au, m = 14-17) chemisorbed onto Au (111) substrates are known to exhibit a chain-length-dependent odd-even effect that places the terminal C-C bond into different orientations. Ion-surface collisions (20 eV) of pyrazine molecular ion (M = m/z 80) with these surfaces yield reaction product ions corresponding to the addition of hydrogen atoms ([M + H]+ = m/z 81) and methyl groups ([M + CH3]+ = m/z 95) from the surface to the probe ion. Differences in the relative abundance of the reaction product ions are measured as a function of chain length for both classes of SAM film. SAM films with odd chain lengths (n, m = 14 and 16) have a consistently higher abundance of H addition product ions than SAM films with even chain lengths (n, m = 15 and 17). Alternating reactivity is also observed for the addition of CH3, with methyl addition occurring more readily on even-chain-length films. The variations are consistent with the well-characterized orientation differences known to exist for films of this type. Specifically, odd-chain-length films are oriented such that the last C-C bond is more parallel to the plane of the surface than it is for even-chain-length films. The critical element of the parallel orientation is that it leaves, on average, one hydrogen atom on the terminal methyl and both hydrogen atoms on the first underlying methylene in more reactive positions compared to even chain lengths. Conversely, the trend in the relative abundance of CH3 addition indicates that the orientation produced by an even-chain-length film, with the last C-C bond more perpendicular to the surface, allows the probe ion better access to the methyl carbon. Reflection absorption IR spectroscopy (RAIRS) data independently confirm the orientational disposition of the films. The RAIRS data show that the odd-even effect is less dramatic for the n-alkanethiols when compared to 4-(4-alkoxyphenyl)benzenethiols. A smaller difference in ion-surface reactivity is measured for n-alkanethiols, demonstrating that ion-surface reactions can distinguish subtle differences in average orientation. In short, we report that the extent of ion-surface reactions of pyrazine ion with two classes of SAM films is directed by the spatial orientation of the surface-confined species that participate in the reaction.
