Abstract
The fluorine atom possesses many intrinsic properties that can be beneficial when incorporated into small molecules. These properties include the atom's size, electronegativity, and ability to block metabolic oxidation sites. Substituents that feature fluorine and fluorine-containing groups are currently prevalent in drugs that lower cholesterol, relieve asthma, and treat anxiety disorders, as well as improve the chemical properties of various medications and imaging agents. The dye scaffolds (fluorescein/rhodamine, coumarin, BODIPY, carbocyanine, and squaraine dyes) reported will address the incorporation of the fluorine atom in the scaffold and the contribution it provides to its application as an imaging agent. It is also important to recognize radiolabeled fluorine atoms used for PET imaging in the early detection of diseases. This review will discuss the many benefits of incorporating fluorine atoms into small molecules and give examples of fluorinated molecules used in the pharmaceutical industry and imaging techniques.

Abstract
Herein, a highly efficient five-step reaction sequence to BODIPYs is presented. The key step is the combination of transition metal-catalyzed in-situ generation of aldehydes and their subsequent organocatalytic activation to yield dipyrromethanes, which are further converted to the corresponding BODIPY. Classic syntheses towards BODIPYs have relied on aldehydes or acid chlorides, which are often not commercially available and rather sensitive to handle. The presented approach starts from readily available and stable alkenes or aryl-bromides, which allows to extend the range of readily available BODIPYs that can be tailored for their specific use. The synthesis of 55 derivatives with overall yields of up to 78 % demonstrates the wide applicability and advantages of the presented method.

Abstract
The synthesis and reactivity of 3,8-dibromo-dodecafluoro-benzo-fused BOPHY 2 are reported, via SN Ar with O-, N- S- and C-nucleophiles, and in Pd(0)-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions (Suzuki and Stille). The resulting perfluoro-BOPHY derivatives were investigated for their reactivity in the presence of various nucleophiles. BOPHY 3 displays reversible color change and fluorescence quenching in the presence of bases (Et3 N, DBU), whereas BOPHY 7 reacts preferentially at the α-pyrrolic positions, and BOPHY 8 undergoes regioselective fluorine substitution in the presence of thiols. The structural and electronic features of the fluorinated BOPHYs were studied by TD-DFT computations. In addition, their spectroscopic and cellular properties were investigated; BOPHY 10 shows the most red-shifted absorption/emission (λmax 659/699 nm) and 7 the highest fluorescence (Φf =0.95), while all compounds studied showed low cytotoxicity toward human HEp2 cells and were efficiently internalized.

Abstract
The synthesis of a new amphiphilic 5,5',6,6'-tetrachlorobenzimidacarbocyanine dye derivative with -(CH2)2-(CF2)5-CF3 chains attached to the nitrogen atoms in the 1,1'-position, CF8O3, is reported. Depending on the dye concentration and the addition of MeOH, CF8O3 forms J- and H-aggregates in aqueous solutions. The aggregation behavior was investigated using steady-state absorption, linear dichroism, and fluorescence spectroscopy, as well as by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). The J-band of the MeOH-free solution is monomer-like, rather broad, and less red-shifted with respect to the monomer absorption, indicating weak excitonic coupling and disorder effects. Cryo-TEM reveals a diversity of supramolecular structures, wherein linear and branched cylindrical micelles dominate. It is concluded that the high stiffness of fluoroalkyl chains does not allow the chains to splay and completely fill up the hydrophobic gap between opposing chromophores. This destabilizes the bilayers and favors the micellar structure motifs instead. The aggregates appearing at 30% MeOH show a split absorption spectrum consisting of a broad blue-shifted H-band and an accompanying sharp red-shifted J-band with perpendicular polarizations. These HJ-type aggregates are also composed of micellar fibers, but these bundle into rope-like strands. For 10% MeOH, a narrow bilayered tube is the dominating morphology. The observed MeOH dependence of aggregation reveals a clear cosolvent effect.

Abstract
Carbon dots (CDs), defined by their size of less than 10 nm, are a class of photoluminescent (PL) and electrochemiluminescent (ECL) nanomaterials that include a variety of carbon-based nanoparticles. However, the control of their properties, especially ECL, remains elusive and afflicted by a series of problems. Here, the authors report CDs that display ECL in water via coreactant ECL, which is the dominant mechanism in biosensing applications. They take advantage of a multicomponent bottom-up approach for preparing and studying the luminescence properties of CDs doped with a dye acting as PL and ECL probe. The dependence of luminescence properties on the surface chemistry is further reported, by investigating the PL and ECL response of CDs with surfaces rich in primary, methylated, or propylated amino groups. While precursors that contribute to the core characterize the PL emission, the surface states influence the efficiency of the excitation-dependent PL emission. The ECL emission is influenced by surface states from the organic shell, but states of the core strongly interact with the surface, influencing the ECL efficiency. These findings offer a framework of pre- and post-synthetic design strategies to improve ECL emission properties, opening new opportunities for exploring biosensing applications of CDs.

Abstract
We describe an expedient access to a 5',6',7'-trifluoro dihydroxanthene-hemicyanine fused scaffold in 2 steps and 54% overall yield from the corresponding salicylic aldehyde. A 6'-regioselective nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) reaction with a wide range of nitrogen, sulfur or selenium nucleophiles then gives access to 16 near-infrared (NIR) fluorophores emitting in the 710-750 nm range. We also report the experimental and theoretical photophysical investigations of these unique optical agents that include the first series of 6'-heavy atom substituted dihydroxanthenes, extending the pool of polyfluorinated markers for biomedical and material applications.

Abstract
A small series of boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes, characterized by the presence of multibranched fluorinated residues, were designed and synthesized. The dyes differ in both the position (para-perfluoroalkoxy-substituted phenyl ring or boron functionalization) and number of magnetically equivalent fluorine atoms (27 or 54 fluorine atoms per molecule). Photophysical and crystallographic characterization of the synthesized BODIPYs was carried out to evaluate the effect of the presence of highly fluorinated moieties on the optical and morphological properties of such compounds.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of a novel dibrominated 1,3,5-tristyrylBODIPY dye is reported, and its potential utility as a singlet oxygen photosensitizer and optical limiting material is assessed. The main spectral band lies in the therapeutic window, and there is a moderately high singlet oxygen quantum yield making the dye potentially suitable for use in biomedical applications and as an optical limiting dye at 532 nm. The optical limiting parameters are comparable to those reported previously for 3,5-distyrylBODIPYs, which suggests that mixtures of 3,5-distyryl and 1,3,5-tristyryl compounds that are formed in Knoevenagel condensation reactions could be used for this application. Theoretical calculations are used to assess the effect of 1,3,5-tristyryl substitution. A smaller red shift of the main spectral band is observed upon styrylation at the 1-position than is the case with the 3,5-positions due to there being smaller MO coefficients at this position, limiting the utility of this structural modification method for shifting the main BODIPY spectral band further into the therapeutic window.

Abstract
PURPOSE The current study presents [(18)F]PARPi-FL as a bimodal fluorescent/positron emission tomography (PET) agent for PARP1 imaging. PROCEDURES [(18)F]PARPi-FL was obtained by (19)F/(18)F isotopic exchange and PET experiments, biodistribution studies, surface fluorescence imaging, and autoradiography carried out in a U87 MG glioblastoma mouse model. RESULTS [(18)F]PARPi-FL showed high tumor uptake in vivo and ex vivo in small xenografts (< 2 mm) with both PET and optical imaging technologies. Uptake of [(18)F]PARPi-FL in blocked U87 MG tumors was reduced by 84 % (0.12 ± 0.02 %injected dose/gram (%ID/g)), showing high specificity of the binding. PET imaging showed accumulation in the tumor (1 h p.i.), which was confirmed by ex vivo phosphor autoradiography. CONCLUSIONS The fluorescent component of [(18)F]PARPi-FL enables cellular resolution optical imaging, while the radiolabeled component of [(18)F]PARPi-FL allows whole-body deep-tissue imaging of malignant growth.

Abstract
We present a conceptually new approach to synthesise a boron-containing Aggregation-Induced Emissive Luminogen (AIEgen) with a chiral chromophore. An intramolecular N-B coordinating bond results in a low-energy transition that renders the material red-emissive in a solid state. By competitive binding of nucleophiles to the boron atom, this bond is replaced in favour of an intermolecular coordinating bond, which results in a tremendous blue-shift in both the absorption and emission. A supportive DFT computation elucidates that a breakage of the intramolecular N-B coordinating bond causes a tremendous loss of conjugation in the LUMO, resulting in a larger energy gap. Owing to the fact that our scaffold is intrinsically chiral and Lewis-acidic, we demonstrate how our AIEgen discriminates between two pairs of enantiomers in a simple UV-vis measurement. Furthermore, the binding capabilities are exploited to stain polymer blends that comprised a non-coordinating and a Lewis-basic polymer. The red fluorescence that originates only from domains of the non-coordinating polymer is conveniently detected by a fluorescence microscope. Thus, compared to current analytical methods, we present a cheaper and faster methodology to study the micro-morphologies of certain polymer blends.

Abstract
A novel synthetic strategy toward highly fluorinated BODIPY dyes with exceptional photostabilities relying on sustainable gold catalysis has been developed. A key to the tailored pyrrole precursors is the gold catalysis performed in ionic liquids as the reaction medium, allowing a facile recycling of the catalysts. The dyes prepared are well-matching with the spectral windows of popular rhodamine dyes and possess high brightness while showing a distinctly higher photostability than the rhodamines especially in aprotic solvents.
