Pyrene-Capped CdSe@ZnS Nanoparticles as Sensitive Flexible Oxygen Sensors in Non-Aqueous Media

Cobalt-Centered Supramolecular Nanoensemble for Regulated Aerobic Oxidation of Alcohols and "One-Pot" Synthesis of Quinazolin-4(3H)-ones

The supramolecular assemblies of the donor-acceptor (D-A) system Im-Tpy, having phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole as the donor and terpyridyl group as the acceptor unit, have been developed, which serve as supramolecular host to stabilize Co(II) in its nanoform. The as-prepared supramolecular nanoensemble Im-Tpy@Co in DMSO:water (7:3) shows high thermal stability and photostability. Even in the case of solvent mismatch, i.e., on dilution with cosolvent THF/DMSO, insignificant changes were observed in the size/morphology of the nanoensemble. The as-prepared Im-Tpy@Co nanoensemble in low catalytic loading (0.1 mol % of Co) catalyzes the oxidation of a wide variety of alcohols to aromatic aldehydes/ketones using visible light radiations as the source of energy without the need of any additive at room temperature. In comparison to already reported systems, the Im-Tpy@Co nanoensemble exhibits high turnover numbers (TONs) and turnover frequencies (TOFs). The practical application of the catalytic system has also been demonstrated in the gram-scale synthesis of 4-chlorobenzaldehyde. The Im-Tpy@Co nanoensemble exhibits recyclability up to four catalytic cycles with insignificant leaching and morphological changes. The present study also demonstrates the catalytic activity of the Im-Tpy@Co nanoensemble in "one-pot" synthesis of quinazolin-4(3H)-ones from 2-aminobenzamide and primary alcohols with better efficiency in comparison to other transition-metal-based catalytic systems.

Semiconductor Quantum Dots as Components of Photoactive Supramolecular Architectures

Luminescent quantum dots (QDs) are colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals consisting of an inorganic core covered by a molecular layer of organic surfactants. Although QDs have been known for more than thirty years, they are still attracting the interest of researchers because of their unique size-tunable optical and electrical properties arising from quantum confinement. Moreover, the controlled decoration of the QD surface with suitable molecular species enables the rational design of inorganic-organic multicomponent architectures that can show a vast array of functionalities. This minireview highlights the recent progress in the use of surface-modified QDs - in particular, those based on cadmium chalcogenides - as supramolecular platforms for light-related applications such as optical sensing, triplet photosensitization, photocatalysis and phototherapy.

Photoactive Molecular-Based Devices, Machines and Materials: Recent Advances

Molecular and supramolecular-based systems and materials that can perform predetermined functions in response to light stimulation have been extensively studied in the past three decades. Their investigation continues to be a highly stimulating topic of chemical research, not only because of the inherent scientific value related to a bottom-up approach to functional nanostructures, but also for the prospective applications in diverse fields of technology and medicine. Light is an important tool in this context, as it can be conveniently used both for supplying energy to the system and for probing its states and transformations. In this microreview we recall some basic aspects of light-induced processes in (supra)molecular assemblies, and discuss their exploitation to implement novel functionalities with nanostructured devices, machines and materials. To this aim we illustrate a few examples from our own recent work, which are meant to illustrate the trends of current research in the field.

Designed Long-Lived Emission from CdSe Quantum Dots through Reversible Electronic Energy Transfer with a Surface-Bound Chromophore

The size-tunable emission of luminescent quantum dots (QDs) makes them highly interesting for applications that range from bioimaging to optoelectronics. For the same applications, engineering their luminescence lifetime, in particular, making it longer, would be as important; however, no rational approach to reach this goal is available to date. We describe a strategy to prolong the emission lifetime of QDs through electronic energy shuttling to the triplet excited state of a surface-bound molecular chromophore. To implement this idea, we made CdSe QDs of different sizes and carried out self-assembly with a pyrene derivative. We observed that the conjugates exhibit delayed luminescence, with emission decays that are prolonged by more than 3 orders of magnitude (lifetimes up to 330 μs) compared to the parent CdSe QDs. The mechanism invokes unprecedented reversible quantum dot to organic chromophore electronic energy transfer.

Measurement of oxygen transfer from air into organic solvents

BACKGROUND

The use of non-aqueous organic media is becoming increasingly important in many biotechnological applications in order to achieve process intensification. Such media can be used, for example, to directly extract poorly water-soluble toxic products from fermentations. Likewise many biological reactions require the supply of oxygen, most normally from air. However, reliable online measurements of oxygen concentration in organic solvents (and hence oxygen transfer rates from air to the solvent) has to date proven impossible due to limitations in the current analytical methods.

RESULTS

For the first time, online oxygen measurements in non-aqueous media using a novel optical sensor are demonstrated. The sensor was used to measure oxygen concentration in various organic solvents including toluene, THF, isooctane, DMF, heptane and hexane (which have all been shown suitable for several biological applications). Subsequently, the oxygen transfer rates from air into these organic solvents were measured.

CONCLUSION

The measurement of oxygen transfer rates from air into organic solvents using the dynamic method was established using the solvent resistant optical sensor. The feasibility of online oxygen measurements in organic solvents has also been demonstrated, paving the way for new opportunities in process control. © 2015 The Authors. Synergism at the Nanoscale

Photoactive nanoparticles are smart systems that exhibit unique optical properties. In general, their intrinsic properties are size dependent. The degree and type of response to size are both related to their composition. Nanoparticles usually require to be capped with organic ligands in order to be dispersible in an aqueous or organic media, thus leading to nanoparticle colloidal dispersions and enhancing the processability of the material. The organic ligand also plays a key role in their preparation. In addition, the high surface-to-volume ratio of the nanoparticles combined with the affinity of the ligands for the nanoparticle surface can be used to place a large number of functional molecules at their periphery. The purpose of this chapter is to understand the synergism between nanoparticles and organic ligands with regard to their preparation, performance, and applicability.

QD-Based FRET Probes at a Glance

The unique optoelectronic properties of quantum dots (QDs) give them significant advantages over traditional organic dyes, not only as fluorescent labels for bioimaging, but also as emissive sensing probes. QD sensors that function via manipulation of fluorescent resonance energy transfer (FRET) are of special interest due to the multiple response mechanisms that may be utilized, which in turn imparts enhanced flexibility in their design. They may also function as ratiometric, or "color-changing" probes. In this review, we describe the fundamentals of FRET and provide examples of QD-FRET sensors as grouped by their response mechanisms such as link cleavage and structural rearrangement. An overview of early works, recent advances, and various models of QD-FRET sensors for the measurement of pH and oxygen, as well as the presence of metal ions and proteins such as enzymes, are also provided.

Three independent channel nanohybrids as fluorescent probes
