The Increasing Value of Biomass: Moving From C6 Carbohydrates to Multifunctionalized Building Blocks via 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural

Improved Electrosynthesis of Biomass Derived Furanic Compounds via Nitroxyl Radical Redox Mediation

Biomass is an abundantly available, underutilized feedstock for the production of bulk and fine chemicals, polymers, and sustainable and biodegradable plastics that are traditionally sourced from petrochemicals. Among potential feedstocks, 2,5-furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) stands out for its potential to be converted to higher-value polymeric materials such as polyethylene furandicarboxylate (PEF), a bio-based plastic alternative. In this study, the sustainable, electrocatalytic oxidation of stable furan molecule 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) to FDCA is investigated using a variety of TEMPO derivative electrocatalysts in a mediated electrosynthetic reaction. Three TEMPO catalysts (acetamido-TEMPO, methoxy-TEMPO, and TEMPO) facilitate full conversion to FDCA in basic conditions with >90% yield and >100% Faradaic efficiency. The remaining three TEMPO catalysts (hydroxy-TEMPO, oxo-TEMPO, and amino-TEMPO) all perform intermediate oxidation of BHMF in basic conditions but do not facilitate full conversion to FDCA. On the basis of pH studies completed on all TEMPO derivatives to assess their electrochemical reversibility and response to substrate, pH and reversibility play significant roles in the catalytic ability of each catalyst, which directly influences catalyst turnover and product formation. More broadly, this study also highlights the importance of an effective and rapid electroanalytical workflow in mediated electrosynthetic reactions, demonstrating how voltammetric catalyst screening can serve as a useful tool for predicting the reactivity and efficacy of a catalyst-substrate electrochemical system.

C3-Alkylation of furfural derivatives by continuous flow homogeneous catalysis

The C3-functionalization of furfural using homogeneous ruthenium catalysts requires the preinstallation of an ortho-directing imine group, as well as high temperatures, which did not allow scaling up, at least under batch conditions. In order to design a safer process, we set out to develop a continuous flow process specifically for the C3-alkylation of furfural (Murai reaction). The transposition of a batch process to a continuous flow process is often costly in terms of time and reagents. Therefore, we chose to proceed in two steps: the reaction conditions were first optimized using a laboratory-built pulsed-flow system to save reagents. The optimized conditions in this pulsed-flow mode were then successfully transferred to a continuous flow reactor. In addition, the versatility of this continuous flow device allowed both steps of the reaction to be carried out, namely the formation of the imine directing group and the C3-functionalization with some vinylsilanes and norbonene.

Catalytic Hydroconversion of 5-HMF to Value-Added Chemicals: Insights into the Role of Catalyst Properties and Feedstock Purity

5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is an important bio-derived platform molecule that is generally obtained from hexoses via acid-catalyzed dehydration. It can be effectively transformed into a variety of value-added derivatives, thus being an ideal candidate for fossil replacement. Both HMF oxidation and hydrogenation processes enable the synthesis of numerous chemicals, monomers for polymerization, and biofuel precursors. This Review summarizes the most recent advances in heterogeneous catalytic hydroconversion of HMF into valuable chemicals with strong focus on 2,5-bishydroxymethyl furan (BHMF), 2,5-bishydroxymethyltetrahydrofuran (BHMTHF), and 2,5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran (DMTHF). In addition, multifunctional catalytic systems that enable a tunable production of various HMF derived intermediates are discussed. Within this chemistry, the surprising impact of HMF purity on the catalytic performance, such as selectivity and activity, during its upgrading is highlighted. Lastly, the remaining challenges in the field of HMF hydroconversion to the mentioned chemicals are summarized and discussed, taking into account the knowledge gain of catalyst properties and feedstock purity.

Diels–Alder Cycloadditions of Bio-Derived Furans with Maleimides as a Sustainable «Click» Approach towards Molecular, Macromolecular and Hybrid Systems

This mini-review highlights the recent research trends in designing organic or organic-inorganic hybrid molecular, biomolecular and macromolecular systems employing intermolecular Diels–Alder cycloadditions of biobased, furan-containing substrates and maleimide dienophiles. The furan/maleimide Diels–Alder reaction is a well-known process that may proceed with high efficiency under non-catalytic and solvent-free conditions. Due to the simplicity, 100% atom economy and biobased nature of many furanic substrates, this type of [4+2]-cycloaddition may be recognized as a sustainable “click” approach with high potential for application in many fields, such as fine organic synthesis, bioorganic chemistry, material sciences and smart polymers development.

Homogeneous Catalyzed Valorization of Furanics: A Sustainable Bridge to Fuels and Chemicals

The development of efficient biomass valorization is imperative for the future sustainable production of chemicals and fuels. Particularly, the last decade has witnessed the development of a plethora of effective and selective transformations of bio-based furanics using homogeneous organometallic catalysis under mild conditions. In this review, we describe some of the advances regarding the conversion of target furanics into value chemicals, monomers for high-performance polymers and materials, and pharmaceutical key intermediates using homogeneous catalysis. Finally, the incorporation of furanic skeletons into complex chemical architectures by multifunctionalization routes is also described.

Intermolecular Diels-Alder Cycloadditions of Furfural-Based Chemicals from Renewable Resources: A Focus on the Regio- and Diastereoselectivity in the Reaction with Alkenes

A recent strong trend toward green and sustainable chemistry has promoted the intensive use of renewable carbon sources for the production of polymers, biofuels, chemicals, monomers and other valuable products. The Diels-Alder reaction is of great importance in the chemistry of renewable resources and provides an atom-economic pathway for fine chemical synthesis and for the production of materials. The biobased furans furfural and 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural, which can be easily obtained from the carbohydrate part of plant biomass, were recognized as "platform chemicals" that will help to replace the existing oil-based refining to biorefining. Diels-Alder cycloaddition of furanic dienes with various dienophiles represents the ideal example of a "green" process characterized by a 100% atom economy and a reasonable E-factor. In this review, we first summarize the literature data on the regio- and diastereoselectivity of intermolecular Diels-Alder reactions of furfural derivatives with alkenes with the aim of establishing the current progress in the efficient production of practically important low-molecular-weight products. The information provided here will be useful and relevant to scientists in many fields, including medical and pharmaceutical research, polymer development and materials science.

Base-Free Synthesis of Furfurylamines from Biomass Furans Using Ru Pincer Complexes

We report the first example of employing homogeneous organometal-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation for the selective reductive amination of furfurals to furfurylamines. An efficient, chemoselective, and base-free method is described using Ru-MACHO-BH as catalyst and iPrOH as H donor. The method tolerates a range of substituents affording moderate to excellent yields.
