Temperature Effects on the Crystalline Structure of iPP Containing Different Solvent-Treated TMB-5 Nucleating Agents

TMB-5 nucleating agent (NA) treated by different solvents were used as the β-NA of iPP. The effects of temperature on the crystalline structure of different iPP/TMB-5, as well as the crystallization and melting behaviors were investigated. It was found that strong polar solvent treated TMB-5 (TMB-5_DMSO and TMB-5_DMF) could induce more β-crystal at high T_c = 140 °C than the other TMB-5 NAs, while the β-crystal inducing efficiency of untreated TMB-5 (TMB-5_UT) and non-polar solvent treated TMB-5 (TMB-5_LP) is seriously reduced at high T_c = 140 °C. TMB-5_DMSO can induce a high and stable content of β-crystal with K_β = 83-94% within T_c = 90-140 °C, and TMB-5_ODCB can induce a high content of β-crystal with K_β > 91.3% within T_c = 90-130 °C. TMB-5_DMF is the most temperature-sensitive one, but can induce a high fraction of β-crystal with K_β > 92% both at low T_c = 90 °C and high T_c = 140 °C. High temperature pre-crystallization at T_pc = 150 °C tremendously reduces the β-crystal inducing efficiency of all TMB-5 NAs. TMB-5_UT and TMB-5_LP exhibit higher nucleating efficiency than TMB-5_DMSO, TMB-5_DMF and TMB-5_ODCB. During the non-isothermal crystallization process, TMB-5_UT induced β-crystal possesses higher structural perfection and stability, while TMB-5_LP is more likely to induce α-crystal with considerable quantity and stability. The structural perfection and stability of TMB-5 induced β-crystal can be enhanced with appropriate increasing of T_c.

Exploring the Effects of MXene on Nonisothermal Crystallization and Melting Behavior of β-Nucleated Isotactic Polypropylene

In this study, one of the commonly used MXene (Ti3C2Tx) and β nucleated isotactic polypropylene (β-iPP)/MXene composites of different compositions were fabricated. The effects of MXene on non-isothermal crystallization and polymorphic behavior of β-iPP/MXene composites were comparatively studied. The non-isothermal crystallization kinetics indicates that for all samples, the lower cooling rates promote composites to crystallize at higher temperatures. When MXene and β-Nucleating agent (β-NA) are added separately, the crystallization temperature of composites shifts towards higher temperatures at all cooling rates. When MXene and β-NA are added simultaneously, the composite shows different cooling rate dependence, and the effects of improving crystallization temperatures is more obvious under rapid cooling. The activation energy of four samples iPP, iPP/MXene, iPP/β-NA, and iPP/MXene/β-NA were -167.5, -185.5, -233.8, and -218.1 kJ/mol respectively, which agree with the variation tendency of crystallization temperatures. The polymorphic behavior analysis obtained from Differential Scanning calorimetry (DSC) is affected by two factors: the ability to form β-crystals and the thermal stability of β-crystals. Because β-crystals tend to recrystallize to α-crystals below a critical temperature, to eliminate the effect of β-α recrystallization, the melting curves at end temperatures Tend = 50 °C and Tend = 100 °C are comparatively studied. The results show that more thermally unstable β-crystals would participate in β-α recrystallization with higher cooling rates. Moreover, thermal stability of β-crystals is improved by adding MXene. To further verify these findings, samples of three different thermal conditions were synthesized and analyzed by DSC, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Polarized Light Optical Microscopy (PLOM), and the results were consistent with the above findings. New understandings of synthesizing β-iPP/MXene composites with adjustable morphologies and polymorphic behavior were proposed.

Ligno-Cellulosic Fibre Sized with Nucleating Agents Promoting Transcrystallinity in Isotactic Polypropylene Composites

The mechanical performance of composites made from isotactic polypropylene reinforced with natural fibres depends on the interface between fibre and matrix, as well as matrix crystallinity. Sizing the fibre surface with nucleating agents to promote transcrystallinity is a potential route to improve the mechanical properties. The sizing of thermo-mechanical pulp and regenerated cellulose (Tencel™) fibres with α- and β-nucleating agents, to improve tensile strength and impact strength respectively, was assessed in this study. Polarised microscopy, electron microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that transcrystallinity was achieved and that the bulk crystallinity of the matrix was affected during processing (compounding and injection moulding). However, despite substantial changes in crystal structure in the final composite, the sizing method used did not lead to significant changes regarding the overall composite mechanical performance.

Investigation on the Effect of Hyperbranched Polyester Grafted Graphene Oxide on the Crystallization Behaviors of β-Nucleated Isotactic Polypropylene

In this article, hyperbranched polyester grafted graphene oxide (GO) was successfully prepared. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were performed for its characterizations. On the other hand, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) were also performed to study its influences on non-isothermal crystallization behaviors of β-nucleated isotactic polypropylene (β-iPP). The grafting ratios of hyperbranched polyester with different supermolecular structures were calculated to be 19.8-24.0 wt %, which increase with the degree of branching. The results showed that the grafting of hyperbranched polyester was advantageous in increasing the crystallization peak temperature Tp and decreasing the crystallization activation energy ΔE of β-iPP/GO composites, which contributed to the iPP's crystallization process. Moreover, under all cooling rates (2, 5, 10, 20, 40 °C/min), crystallinities of β-iPP/GO were greatly improved after being grafted with hyperbranched polyester, because of the increase of the relative contents of α-phase αc and the average α-crystal sizes.

Ordered structure effects on β-nucleated isotactic polypropylene/graphene oxide composites with different thermal histories

In this paper, the influence of ordered structure effects (OSE) on crystallization behaviors of β-nucleated isotactic polypropylene/graphene oxide (β-iPP/GO) composites with different thermal histories, which crystallized at a slow cooling rate (called SLOW), fast cooling rate (called FAST) and medium cooling rate (called MED), respectively, was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The ordered structure status of three samples before crystallization measurement was controlled by tuning the fusion temperature T_f and melting time t_m. The results showed that for all samples, OSE would occur in an appropriate T_f region (Region II). The OSE efficiency of MED was the highest, while that of SLOW were the lowest. It was also found that the crystallinity and crystalline perfection of SLOW were the highest, while those of FAST were the lowest. The effects of the melting time t_m on the OSE were also investigated. At T_f = 172 °C, the OSE efficiency of FAST reached the maximum at t_m = 5 min, while that of SLOW reached the maximum at t_m = 20 min. It was indicated that the OSE efficiency was affected by thermal history, and it could be improved by selecting the appropriate t_m. Related mechanisms concerning the roles of thermal history on the OSE behavior were proposed based on the results of DSC and in situ SAXS.

Preparation and Crystallization Property of Ternary Composites of WBG/AA-RCC/PP

A series of ternary composites of WBG/AA-RCC/PP were prepared and their crystallization behaviors were investigated by XRD and DSC. The results indicate that WBG and AA-RCC affect the crystallization of PP matrix with a mutual inhibition effect. This effect is enhanced with increasing content of WBG and induces the growth ofβ2crystal. AA-RCC promotes the heterogeneous nucleation ofαcrystal and offers a template forαcrystal growth along a specific lattice plane and promotes the epitaxial crystallization of PP matrix, while the specific arrangedαcrystal could induce the formation ofβcrystal.
