Abstract
This study presents the development and characterization of a nanocomposite material, consisting of thermoplastic starch (TPS) reinforced with bentonite clay (BC) and encapsulated with vitamin B2 (VB). The research is motivated by the potential of TPS as a renewable and biodegradable substitute for petroleum-based materials in the biopolymer industry. The effects of VB on the physicochemical properties of TPS/BC films, including mechanical and thermal properties, water uptake, and weight loss in water, were investigated. In addition, the surface morphology and chemical composition of the TPS samples were analyzed using high-resolution SEM microscopy and EDS, providing insight into the structure-property relationship of the nanocomposites. The results showed that the addition of VB significantly increased the tensile strength and Young's modulus of TPS/BC films, with the highest values observed for nanocomposites containing 5 php of VB and 3 php of BC. Furthermore, the release of VB was controlled by the BC content, with higher BC content leading to lower VB release. These findings demonstrate the potential of TPS/BC/VB nanocomposites as environmentally friendly materials with improved mechanical properties and controlled release of VB, which can have significant applications in the biopolymer industry.

Abstract
Due to rapid industrialization, urbanization, and surge in modern human activities, water contamination is a major threat to humanity globally. Contaminants ranging from organic compounds, dyes, to inorganic heavy metals have been of major concern in recent years. This necessitates the development of affordable water remediation technologies to improve water quality. There is a growing interest in nanotechnology recently because of its application in eco-friendly, cost-effective, and durable material production. This study presents a review of recent nanocomposite technologies based on clay, applied in the removal of heavy metals from wastewater, and highlights the shortcomings of existing methods. Recently published reports, articles, and papers on clay-based nanocomposites for the removal of heavy metals have been reviewed. Currently, the most common methods utilized in the removal of heavy metals are reverse osmosis, electrodialysis, ion exchange, and activated carbon. These methods, however, suffer major shortcomings such as inefficiency when trace amounts of contaminant are involved, uneconomical costs of operation and maintenance, and production of contaminated sludge. The abundance of clay on the Earth’s surface and the ease of modification to improve adsorption capabilities have made it a viable candidate for the synthesis of nanocomposites. Organoclay nanocomposites such as polyacrylamide-bentonite, polyaniline-montmorillonite, and β-cyclodextrin-bentonite have been synthesized for the selective removal of various heavy metals such as Cu2+, Co2+, among others. Bacterial clay nanocomposites such as E. coli kaolinite nanocomposites have also been successfully synthesized and applied in the removal of heavy metals. Low-cost nanocomposites of clay using biopolymers like chitosan and cellulose are especially in demand due to the cumulative abundance of these materials in the environment. A comparative analysis of different synthetic processes to efficiently remove heavy metal contaminants with clay-based nanocomposite adsorbents is made.

Abstract
Extraction of toxic heavy metal ions from aqueous medium using poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide-acrylic acid) (P(NiPmA-Ac)) microgels as adsorbent has been investigated in present study. P(NiPmA-Ac) microgel particles were prepared by free radical precipitation polymerization in aqueous medium. Morphology and size of the prepared microgel particles was investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) analysis of pure and metal ion-loaded microgel particles was performed to confirm the presence of various functionalities of microgel particles and their interaction with metal ions extracted from aqueous medium. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to investigate the thermal stability and thermal behavior of pure and metal ion-loaded microgel particles. Contents of metal ions loaded into microgel particles were determined by TGA analysis. It was observed that P(NiPmA-Ac) particles have a potential to extract Cu2+ and Co2+ ions from aqueous medium. The Freundlich adsorption isotherm model best interprets the adsorption process as compared with the Langmuir model. Value of R2 according to the Freundlich adsorption isotherm was found to be 0.994 and 0.993 for Cu2+ and Co2+ ions, respectively. Adsorption process was followed by pseudo second order kinetics for Cu2+ and Co2+ ions with R2 values of 0.999 for both metal ions. Thermodynamic study showed that adsorption process was spontaneous, feasible, and endothermic in nature. Entropy was decreased at adsorbate-adsorbent interface during adsorption process. Adsorbent was recycled and reused for removal of Cu2+ ions, and adsorption efficiency was found to be maintained up to three cycles. Microgel particles also have ability to extract Cu2+ ions efficiently from electroplating wastewater. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
Herein, we describe the synthesis of poly(1,8-octamethylene citrate) materials modified in the bulk with 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (cPOCCD), biodegradable elastomers with intrinsic sorption properties for drug delivery. The chemical structure, physicochemical properties, in vitro drug loading and release profiles of cPOCCD were investigated. Thus, cPOCCD polyesters absorb the studied drugs more effective and release them for a longer period of time than poly(1,8-octamethylene citrate) materials not containing cyclodextrins.

Abstract
Water is essential for every living being. Increasing population, mismanagement of water sources, urbanization, industrialization, globalization, and global warming have all contributed to the scarcity of fresh water sources and the growing demand of such resources. Securing and allocating sufficient water resources has thus become one of the current major global challenges. Membrane technology has dominated the field of water purification due to its ease of usage and fabrication with high efficiency. The development of novel membrane materials can hence play a central role in advancing the field of membrane technology. It is noted that polymer-clay nanocomposites have been used widely for treatment of waste water. Nonetheless, not much efforts have been put to functionalize their membranes to be selective for specific targets. This review was organized to offer better insights into various types of functional polymer and clays composite membranes developed for efficient treatment and purification of water/wastewater. Our discussion was extended further to evaluate the efficacy of membrane techniques employed in the water industry against major chemical (e.g., heavy metal, dye, and phenol) and biological contaminants (e.g., biofouling).

Abstract
The exponential increment in world population, recent industrialization, civilization, agricultural and household activities leads to greater levels of water pollution in terms of organic and inorganic contaminants. However, numerous workers have done research for the removal of these pollutants and various types of clays and/or modified clays have been extensively used for this purpose. But all identified adsorbent materials are not able to remove pollutants after certain concentration and sometimes these contaminants are left as such in environment which may create other environmental issues. This paper presents comprehensive information for the adsorption of heavy metal ions from water and waste water using various nanostructured adsorbents such as different clay minerals (kaolinite, montmorillonite) and clay (bentonite), carbon nanotube and nanocomposites. In addition to this, the efficiency of developed materials for the removal of heavy metals is also discussed in details along with comparison of their adsorption efficiencies, pH and change in specific surface area, initial metal ion concentration and contact time. This paper also states the future directions which could be followed to challenge the situation of removal of traces of heavy metals from water, hence protecting water bodies from high pollution load.

Abstract
Eco-friendly polyvinyl alcohol/carboxymethyl cellulose (isolated from pineapple peel) hydrogels reinforced with graphene oxide and bentonite were prepared as efficient adsorbents for methylene blue (MB). The structure and morphology of the prepared hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Introducing graphene oxide and bentonite into the hydrogels evidently enhanced the thermal stability, swelling ability and MB adsorption capacity. The effects of initial concentration of MB, pH, contact time and temperature on MB adsorption capacity of the prepared hydrogels were investigated. Adsorption kinetics and equilibrium adsorption isotherm fitted pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model well, respectively. After introducing graphene oxide and bentonite into the hydrogels, the maximum adsorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir isotherm model reached 172.14 mg/g at 30 °C, obviously higher than the hydrogels prepared without these additions (83.33 mg/g). Furthermore, all the prepared hydrogels also displayed good reusability for the efficient removal of MB. Consequently, the prepared hydrogels could be served as eco-friendly, stable, efficient and reusable adsorbents for anionic dyes in wastewater treatment.
