A novel graphene hybrid for reducing fire hazard of epoxy resin

Facile Synthesis of Reduced-Graphene-Oxide-Modified Ammonium Polyphosphate to Enhance the Flame Retardancy, Smoke Release Suppression, and Mechanical Properties of Epoxy Resin

A unique hybridized intumescent flame retardant named reduced-graphene-oxide-modified ammonium polyphosphate (RGO-APP) was successfully synthesized via the simple hydrothermal method and reduced process. Then, the obtained RGO-APP was applied in epoxy resin (EP) for flame retardancy reinforcement. The addition of RGO-APP results in a significant reduction in heat release and smoke production from the EP, which is attributed to EP/RGO-APP producing a more compact and intumescent char against the heat transfer and combustible decomposition, thus enhancing the fire safety of EP, as confirmed by char residue analysis. Especially, the EP containing 15 wt% RGO-APP acquires a limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 35.8% and shows a 83.6% reduction in peak heat release rate and a 74.3% reduction in peak smoke production rate compared with those of pure EP. The tensile test exhibits that the presence of RGO-APP favors the enhancement in tensile strength and elastic modulus of EP due to the good compatibility between flame retardant and epoxy matrix, as supported by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses. This work provides a new strategy for the modification of APP, thus facilitating a promising application in polymeric materials.

Design of Poly(cyclotriphosphazene)-Functionalized Zirconium Phosphate Nanoplatelets To Simultaneously Enhance the Dynamic Mechanical and Flame Retardancy Properties of Polyamide 6

To obtain polyamide 6 (PA6) composites with improved flame retardancy and thermomechanical properties, highly cross-linked supramolecular poly(cyclotriphosphazene)-functionalized α-zirconium phosphate (f-ZrP) nanoplatelets were synthesized and melt-blended with PA6 in a twin-screw extruder. The performance enhancements of composites were investigated through measuring the dynamic mechanical property and observing cone calorimeter data, toxic gas evolution, and UL-94 rating. The thermomechanical performance of PA6 was increased by 37.2% after composite formation with f-ZrP. As for the fire retardancy performance, compared to neat PA6, the composite containing 10 wt % f-ZrP showed 41.7 and 30.4% decrease in the peak heat and total heat release rates, respectively, and the UL-94 rating of the composite was V-0. Moreover, the thermogravimetric analysis combined with infrared spectroscopy revealed that the addition of f-ZrP to the PA6 led to decrease in the evolution of the volatile compounds and toxic gases, with the formation of highly cross-linked P-N-containing dense char with microspheres, providing a strong barrier to the inhibition of the heat and flammable volatile components transferring between the flame zone area and substrate during the combustion test. Finally, based on the obtained results, the possible mechanisms for improved mechanical and fire retardancy properties of the composites were proposed.

Nanoreinforcements of Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials for Flame Retardant Polymeric Composites: An Overview

Polymer materials are ubiquitous in daily life. While polymers are often convenient and helpful, their properties often obscure the fire hazards they may pose. Therefore, it is of great significance in terms of safety to study the flame retardant properties of polymers while still maintaining their optimal performance. Current literature shows that although traditional flame retardants can satisfy the requirements of polymer flame retardancy, due to increases in product requirements in industry, including requirements for durability, mechanical properties, and environmental friendliness, it is imperative to develop a new generation of flame retardants. In recent years, the preparation of modified two-dimensional nanomaterials as flame retardants has attracted wide attention in the field. Due to their unique layered structures, two-dimensional nanomaterials can generally improve the mechanical properties of polymers via uniform dispersion, and they can form effective physical barriers in a matrix to improve the thermal stability of polymers. For polymer applications in specialized fields, different two-dimensional nanomaterials have potential conductivity, high thermal conductivity, catalytic activity, and antiultraviolet abilities, which can meet the flame retardant requirements of polymers and allow their use in specific applications. In this review, the current research status of two-dimensional nanomaterials as flame retardants is discussed, as well as a mechanism of how they can be applied for reducing the flammability of polymers.
