Compressible Separator and Catalyst for Simultaneous Separation and Purification of Emulsions and Aqueous Pollutants

Oily wastewater, a global environmental concern, demands efficient oil/water separation and pollutant removal. Our compressible separator and catalyst (CSC) balls, prepared through sponge etching and metal nanoparticle synthesis, exhibited efficient degradation of dyes of varying sizes, spanning a molecular weight range from 139 to 696 g/mol during the oil/water separation. Control over the distance between catalysts was achieved by incorporating Ag-Pt-Pd catalysts into the sponge skeleton and by adjusting the compression rates. The dispersion of the catalysts improved degradation efficiency for larger dyes, while concentrating the catalysts proved to be more effective for the smaller ones. By optimizing the compression rates of CSC balls, we successfully achieved the effective removal of emulsions of different sizes and precise control of flux. Our CSC ball-loaded system offers efficient and versatile solutions for concurrent separation and purification of emulsions and pollutants with potential environmental benefits.

CO2/CH4 separation performance of SiO2/PES composite membrane prepared by gas phase hydrolysis and grafting coating in gas-liquid membrane contactor: A comparative study

The gas-liquid membrane contactor (GLMC) is a new and promising kind of gas separation technique, but still exhibits limitations, especially in membrane performance. In order to solve the above problems, we fabricated and characterized novel OH/SiO2/PES composite membranes using gas phase hydrolysis and graft coating methods, respectively. In the preparation process, whether to use alkali to pretreat the membrane was used as an evaluation index. The CO2/CH4 separation performance was tested using the modified OH/SiO2/PES hollow fiber membrane as the membrane contactor in GLMC. In the experiment, we conducted a single factor experiment with diethanolamine (DEA) as the adsorbent to analyze the effect of the flow rate and concentration of DEA on the separation of CO2/CH4. The collected gas had a CH4 content of 99.92% and a CO2 flux of 10.1059 × 10-3 mol m-2 s-1 while DEA at a concentration of 1 mol/L was flowing at a rate of 16 L/h. The highest separation factor occurred at this moment, which was 833.67. Overall, the CO2/CH4 separation performance in GLMC was enhanced with the use of the fluorinated OH/SiO2/PES composite membrane.

Recent Advances on the Fabrication of Antifouling Phase-Inversion Membranes by Physical Blending Modification Method

Membrane technology is an essential tool for water treatment and biomedical applications. Despite their extensive use in these fields, polymeric-based membranes still face several challenges, including instability, low mechanical strength, and propensity to fouling. The latter point has attracted the attention of numerous teams worldwide developing antifouling materials for membranes and interfaces. A convenient method to prepare antifouling membranes is via physical blending (or simply blending), which is a one-step method that consists of mixing the main matrix polymer and the antifouling material prior to casting and film formation by a phase inversion process. This review focuses on the recent development (past 10 years) of antifouling membranes via this method and uses different phase-inversion processes including liquid-induced phase separation, vapor induced phase separation, and thermally induced phase separation. Antifouling materials used in these recent studies including polymers, metals, ceramics, and carbon-based and porous nanomaterials are also surveyed. Furthermore, the assessment of antifouling properties and performances are extensively summarized. Finally, we conclude this review with a list of technical and scientific challenges that still need to be overcome to improve the functional properties and widen the range of applications of antifouling membranes prepared by blending modification.

Ceramic-Polymer Composite Membranes for Water and Wastewater Treatment: Bridging the Big Gap between Ceramics and Polymers

Clean water supply is an essential element for the entire sustainable human society, and the economic and technology development. Membrane filtration for water and wastewater treatments is the premier choice due to its high energy efficiency and effectiveness, where the separation is performed by passing water molecules through purposely tuned pores of membranes selectively without phase change and additional chemicals. Ceramics and polymers are two main candidate materials for membranes, where the majority has been made of polymeric materials, due to the low cost, easy processing, and tunability in pore configurations. In contrast, ceramic membranes have much better performance, extra-long service life, mechanical robustness, and high thermal and chemical stabilities, and they have also been applied in gas, petrochemical, food-beverage, and pharmaceutical industries, where most of polymeric membranes cannot perform properly. However, one of the main drawbacks of ceramic membranes is the high manufacturing cost, which is about three to five times higher than that of common polymeric types. To fill the large gap between the competing ceramic and polymeric membranes, one apparent solution is to develop a ceramic-polymer composite type. Indeed, the properly engineered ceramic-polymer composite membranes are able to integrate the advantages of both ceramic and polymeric materials together, providing improvement in membrane performance for efficient separation, raised life span and additional functionalities. In this overview, we first thoroughly examine three types of ceramic-polymer composite membranes, (i) ceramics in polymer membranes (nanocomposite membranes), (ii) thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes, and (iii) ceramic-supported polymer membranes. In the past decade, great progress has been made in improving the compatibility between ceramics and polymers, while the synergy between them has been among the main pursuits, especially in the development of the high performing nanocomposite membranes for water and wastewater treatment at lowered manufacturing cost. By looking into strategies to improve the compatibility among ceramic and polymeric components, we will conclude with briefing on the perspectives and challenges for the future development of the composite membranes.

Nanofiltration Composite Membranes Based on KIT-6 and Functionalized KIT-6 Nanoparticles in a Polymeric Matrix with Enhanced Performances

The nanofiltration composite membranes were obtained by incorporation of KIT-6 ordered mesoporous silica, before and after its functionalization with amine groups, into polyphenylene-ether-ether-sulfone (PPEES) matrix. The incorporation of silica nanoparticles into PPEES polymer matrix was evidenced by FTIR and UV–VIS spectroscopy. SEM images of the membranes cross-section and their surface topology, evidenced by AFM, showed a low effect of KIT-6 silica nanoparticles loading and functionalization. The performances of the obtained membranes were appraised in permeation of Chaenomeles japonica fruit extracts and the selective separation of phenolic acids and flavonoids. The obtained results proved that the PPEES with functionalized KIT-6 nanofiltration membrane, we have prepared, is suitable for the polyphenolic compound’s concentration from the natural extracts.
