Superabsorbent composite. XIII. Effects of Al3+-attapulgite on hydrogel strength and swelling behaviors of poly(acrylic acid)/Al3+-attapulgite superabsorbent composites

A macromolecular cross-linked alginate aerogel with excellent concentrating effect for rapid hemostasis

Alginate-based materials present promising potential for emergency hemostasis due to their excellent properties, such as procoagulant capability, biocompatibility, low immunogenicity, and cost-effectiveness. However, the inherent deficiencies in water solubility and mechanical strength pose a threat to hemostatic efficiency. Here, we innovatively developed a macromolecular cross-linked alginate aerogel based on norbornene- and thiol-functionalized alginates through a combined thiol-ene cross-linking/freeze-drying process. The resulting aerogel features an interconnected macroporous structure with remarkable water-uptake capacity (approximately 9000 % in weight ratio), contributing to efficient blood absorption, while the enhanced mechanical strength of the aerogel ensures stability and durability during the hemostatic process. Comprehensive hemostasis-relevant assays demonstrated that the aerogel possessed outstanding coagulation capability, which is attributed to the synergistic impacts on concentrating effect, platelet enrichment, and intrinsic coagulation pathway. Upon application to in vivo uncontrolled hemorrhage models of tail amputation and hepatic injury, the aerogel demonstrated significantly superior performance compared to commercial alginate hemostatic agent, yielding reductions in clotting time and blood loss of up to 80 % and 85 %, respectively. Collectively, our work illustrated that the alginate porous aerogel overcomes the deficiencies of alginate materials while exhibiting exceptional performance in hemorrhage, rendering it an appealing candidate for rapid hemostasis.

Superabsorbent polymers: A state-of-art review on their classification, synthesis, physicochemical properties, and applications

Superabsorbent polymers (SAP) and modified natural polymer hydrogels are widely and increasingly used in agriculture, health care textiles, effluent treatment, drug delivery, tissue engineering, civil concrete structure, etc. However, not many comprehensive reviews are available on this class of novel polymers. A review covering all the viable applications of SAP will be highly useful for researchers, industry persons, and medical, healthcare, and agricultural purposes. Hence, an attempt has been made to review SAPs with reference to their classifications, synthesis, modification by crosslinking, and physicochemical characterization such as morphology, swellability, thermal and mechanical properties, lifetime prediction, thermodynamics of swelling, absorption, release and transport kinetics, quantification of hydrophilic groups, etc. Besides, the possible methods of fine-tuning their structures for improving their absorption capacity, fast absorption kinetics, mechanical strength, controlled release features, etc. were also addressed to widen their uses. This review has also highlighted the biodegradability, commercial viability and market potential of SAPs, SAP composites, the feasibility of using biomass as raw materials for SAP production, etc. The challenges and future prospects of SAP, their safety, and environmental issues are also discussed.

Bioinspired mineral-polymeric hybrid hyaluronic acid/poly (γ-glutamic acid) hydrogels as tunable scaffolds for stem cells differentiation

Aiming at the difficulty of integrated repair of osteochondral tissue, we designed a hybrid hydrogel scaffold that mimicked the microenvironment of osteochondral niches. Besides, the nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) was specially introduced into the hydrogel for its natural ability to promote bone regeneration. The hydrogel also exhibited good toughness (7500 KJ/m³), strength (1000 kPa), viscoelasticity, and in vitro cell experiments showed that hydrogels had quite good cytocompatibility (near 100 % viability). The results of the three-dimensional (3D) cell culture also proved that the survival rate of the cells in the hybrid hydrogels doped with nHAP and dispersion were the highest. In vitro RT-qPCR experiments proved that after being cultured in hydrogel scaffolds doped with nHAP, bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) could express genes related to osteoblasts and chondrocytes. As a result, this hydrogel provides a general for developing alternative materials applicable for stem cells differentiation and even osteochondral tissue engineering.

Investigation on the Effect of Poly(butylmethacrylate)/attapulgite Nanocomposites for Oil Absorption

  In this work, a series of novel polybutylmethacrylate (PBMA)/attapulgite (APT) were synthesized by suspended emulsion polymerization, using ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as crosslinker. The nanocomposites were characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effects of polymerization variables including amount of initiator, amount of crosslinker, and APT content on oil absorbency were investigated, and the swelling kinetics in toluene and chloroform was also systematically evaluated. The results indicated that incorporating 7 wt% APT into PBMA polymeric network could enhance the oil absorbency and oil absorption rate of the oil-absorbing resin. Furthermore, the developed nanocomposites also exhibited good reusability and oil-retention capabilities. The nanocomposites are expected to find practical applications in the recovery of spilled oils and the treatment of wastewater.
