Synergistic effects of silica nanoparticles and reactive compatibilizer on the compatibilization of polystyrene/polyamide 6 blends

Effects of silica surface modification with silane and poly(ethylene glycol) on flexural strength, protein-repellent, and antibacterial properties of acrylic dental nanocomposites

OBJECTIVE

The main aim of the current work was to develop dental acrylic-based composites with protein-repellent and antibacterial properties by using surface-modified silica nanoparticles. The effects of surface modification of silica nanoparticles in protein-repellent and antibacterial activity and mechanical properties of dental composites including flexural strength, flexural modulus, and hardness were discussed.

METHODS

The surface of silica nanoparticles was first chemically treated with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) as a coupling agent and then with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) bonded to MPS. Dental acrylic-based composites were prepared with mass fractions of 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40 % of PEG-modified MPS-silica nanoparticles (PMS). The chemical surface modification of silica nanoparticles with MPS and PEG was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).

RESULTS

The dental composite containing 20 wt% PMS nanoparticles could reduce the protein adsorption by 28 % as compared with a composite containing 20 wt% MPS-modified silica. The antibacterial test indicated that the PMS nanoparticles can significantly reduce the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans and the biofilm formation on the surface of dental composites. It was found that the flexural strength increased by increasing the PMS nanoparticles from 0 to 20 wt% and then decreased by the incorporation of higher percentages of these nanoparticles. Also, with increasing the weight percentage of PMS nanoparticles, the elastic and the flexural modulus and the hardness of resin nanocomposites were increased.

SIGNIFICANCE

In the current work, for the first time, dental resin composites containing PEG were prepared with excellent protein-repellent and antibacterial properties.

Compatibilization Behavior of Double Spherical TETA-SiO2@PDVB Janus Particles Anchored at the Phase Interface of Acrylic Resin/Epoxy Resin (AR/EP) Polymer Blends

The inorganic particles used as a compatibilizer play a role in crack termination and heat resistance. However, the poor compatibility of inorganic particles and polymer hinders their application. Herein, the double spherical SiO₂@PDVB Janus particles (JPs) were modified with triethylenetetramine (TETA), and the obtained anisotropic TETA-SiO₂@PDVB JPs were used as the compatibilizer of acrylic resin/epoxy resin (AR/EP) composites. The modification and the compatibilization of TETA-SiO₂@PDVB JPs were studied by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and dynamic mechanical analyzer, impact test, tensile test, and so forth. Results show that amino groups grafted onto the SiO₂ lobe can react with epoxy groups of EP, which results in the TETA-SiO₂ lobe being embedded in the EP phase and the PDVB lobe being pushed toward the AR phase. The TETA-SiO₂@PDVB JPs anchored at the interface of AR and EP increase their interfacial adhesion, decrease the domain phase size and distribution of dispersed AR, and improve the compatibility of AR/EP composites. The compatibilization of nanoparticles (NPs) is realized by the cavitation and blunting of different scaled AR phase domain distributions and that of JPs is realized by the strong interfacial force originated by JPs. Moreover, the desorption energy of TETA-SiO₂@PDVB JPs is higher than that of SiO₂-TETA; so the glass transition temperature (T _g) of AR/EP/JP composites is higher than that of AR/EP/NP composites. The strong interfacial adhesion and high desorption energy endow TETA-SiO₂@PDVB JPs with a toughening effect and enhancing effect. The impact strength and the tensile strength of AR/EP/TETA-SiO₂@PDVB composites are 16.03 kJ/m² and 63.12 MPa, which are 9.91 kJ/m² and 16.32 MPa higher than those of AR/EP composites, respectively. JPs used in the thermosetting EP is benefit to its toughening study and the new anisotropic Janus compatibilizer.

An Investigation and Comparison of the Blending of LDPE and PP with Different Intrinsic Viscosities of PET

The blending of aliphatic polyolefins and aromatic poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) based on different intrinsic viscosities (IV) was conducted in a torque rheometer. The comparison of blend components in terms of low density polythene (LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) in blending with PET was investigated, and the effects of the IV and proportion of PET on polymer blends are discussed in detail. Polymer blends with or without compatibilizer were examined by using a differential scanning calorimeter, thermogravimetric analyzer, rotary rheometer, field-emission scanning electron microscopy and a universal testing machine. It was found that the blending led to an increase in processability and a decrease in thermal stability for blends. The morphological analysis revealed that the incompatibility of blends was aggravated by a higher IV of PET, while this situation could be improved by the addition of compatibilizer. Results showed that there was an opposite effect for the tensile strength and the elongation at break of the polymer blend in the presence of a compatibilizer, wherein the influence of IV of PET was complicated.
