Functional PDMS Elastomers: Bulk Composites, Surface Engineering, and Precision Fabrication

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-the simplest and most common silicone compound-exemplifies the central characteristics of its class and has attracted tremendous research attention. The development of PDMS-based materials is a vivid reflection of the modern industry. In recent years, PDMS has stood out as the material of choice for various emerging technologies. The rapid improvement in bulk modification strategies and multifunctional surfaces has enabled a whole new generation of PDMS-based materials and devices, facilitating, and even transforming enormous applications, including flexible electronics, superwetting surfaces, soft actuators, wearable and implantable sensors, biomedicals, and autonomous robotics. This paper reviews the latest advances in the field of PDMS-based functional materials, with a focus on the added functionality and their use as programmable materials for smart devices. Recent breakthroughs regarding instant crosslinking and additive manufacturing are featured, and exciting opportunities for future research are highlighted. This review provides a quick entrance to this rapidly evolving field and will help guide the rational design of next-generation soft materials and devices.

Gradient-Based Microfluidic Platform for One Single Rapid Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing

Antimicrobial resistance is a growing problem, necessitating rapid antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) to enable effective in-clinic diagnostic testing and treatment. Conventional AST using broth microdilution or the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion are time-consuming (e.g., 24-72 h), labor-intensive, and costly and consume reagents. Here, we propose a novel gradient-based microchamber microfluidic (GM²) platform to perform AST assay for a wide range of antibiotic concentrations plus zero (positive control) and maximum (negative control) concentrations all in a single test. Antibiotic lateral diffusion within enriched to depleted (C_max and zero, respectively) cocurrent flowing fluids, moving alongside a micron-sized main channel, is led to form an antibiotic concentration profile in microchambers, connected to the depleted side of the main channel. We examined the tunability of the GM² platform, in terms of producing a wide range of antibiotic concentrations in a gradient mode between two consecutive microchambers with changing either the loading fluids' flow rates or their initial concentrations. We also tested the GM² platform for profiling bacteria associated with human Crohn's disease and bovine mastitis. Time to result for performing a complete AST assay was ∼ 3-4 h in the GM² platform. Lastly, the GM² platform tracked the bacterial growth independent of an antibiotic mechanism of action or bacterial species in a robust and easy-to-implement fashion.

Tuned Fabrication of the Aligned and Opened CNT Membrane with Exceptionally High Permeability and Selectivity for Bioalcohol Recovery

Synthetic membranes usually suffer from a ubiquitous trade-off between permeability and selectivity. Carbon nanotube (CNT)-based hybrid materials have shown attractive properties in high-performance membrane preparation; however, the aggregation of random CNTs in polymer remains a great challenge. Herein, the aligned and open-ended CNT/(polydimethylsiloxane) PDMS membranes are controllably fabricated to form a hamburger-like structure that possesses nanochannels (∼10 nm) in the intermediate layer as well as angstrom cavities in the embedded PDMS. These aligned CNT membranes surpass the filling content limitation of the nonaligned CNT/PDMS membrane (37.4 wt % versus ∼10 wt %), leading to excellent mechanical properties and a multiplying performance increase of mass flux and selectivity for the separation of alcohols. The membranes break the permeability-selectivity trade-off with both parameters remarkably increasing (maximum 9 times) for bioalcohol separation. The established pervaporative-ultrafiltration mechanism indicates that the penetrant molecules preferentially pass through CNT internal nanochannels with increasing membrane permeability, thereby paving a way to nanoscale design of highly efficient channeled membranes for separation application.

Elastic stiffness and filler size effect of covalently grafted nanosilica polyimide composites: molecular dynamics study

The filler size-dependent elastic stiffness of nanosilica (α-quartz)-reinforced polyimide(s-BPDA/1,3,4-APB) composites under the same volume fraction and grafting ratio conditions was investigated via molecular dynamics(MD) simulations. To enhance the interfacial load transfer efficiency, we treated the surface oxygen atoms of the silica nanoparticle with additional silicon atoms attached by a propyl group to which the aromatic hydrocarbon in the polyimide is directly grafted. As the radius of the embedded nanoparticle increases, the Young's and shear moduli gradually decrease, showing a prominent filler size effect. At the same time, the moduli of the nanocomposites increase as the grafting ratio increases. The contribution of different nanoparticles to the filler size dependency in elastic stiffness of the nanocomposites can be elucidated by comparing the normalized adhesive interaction energy between the particle and matrix which exhibits prominent filler size dependency. Because of the immobilization of the matrix polymer in the vicinity of the nanoparticles, which was confirmed by the self-diffusion coefficient, the highly grafted interface is found to bring about a greater reinforcing effect than the ungrafted interface.
