Temperature and pH responsive hydrogels based on polyethylene glycol analogues and poly(methacrylic acid) via click chemistry

Facile Fabrication of Multifunctional Transparent Flame-Retarded Hydrogel for Fire-Resistant Glass with Excellent Transparency, Fire Resistance and Anti-Ageing Property

Acrylamide-methacrylic acid copolymer named P (AM-co-MAA) was synthesized via aqueous solution polymerization, and then mixed with crosslinker, flame retardants and initiators to prepare multifunctional transparent flame-retarded hydrogels with transparency, fire resistance and anti-ageing property. The results show that the application of multifunctional transparent flame-retarded hydrogel imparts high level of transparency and excellent fire resistance to the fire-resistant glass, and the light transmittance and fire resistance of the flame-retarded hydrogel increases with the increasing mass ratio of AM to MAA in P(AM-co-MAA). When the mass ratio of AM to MAA is 4:1, the obtained P(AM-co-MAA) imparts the lowest backside temperature of 130 °C at 3600 s and highest light transmittance of 86.1% to the transparent flame-retarded hydrogel. TG and DSC analysis show that the addition of P(AM-co-MAA) increases the thermal stability of the transparent flame-retarded hydrogels due to the formation of numerous hydrogen bonds via the complexation between amide and carboxyl groups. Accelerated ageing test indicates that the transparent flame-retarded hydrogel containing P(AM-co-MAA) exerts durable fire resistance and transparency, and the ageing resistance of the transparent flame-retarded hydrogel depends on the mass ratio of AM to MAA in P(AM-co-MAA). Therefore, this study provides a promising strategy to prepare a novel multifunctional transparent flame-retarded hydrogel with excellent light transmittance, fire resistance and anti-ageing properties.

Thermoresponsive Nanogels Based on Different Polymeric Moieties for Biomedical Applications

Nanogels, or nanostructured hydrogels, are one of the most interesting materials in biomedical engineering. Nanogels are widely used in medical applications, such as in cancer therapy, targeted delivery of proteins, genes and DNAs, and scaffolds in tissue regeneration. One salient feature of nanogels is their tunable responsiveness to external stimuli. In this review, thermosensitive nanogels are discussed, with a focus on moieties in their chemical structure which are responsible for thermosensitivity. These thermosensitive moieties can be classified into four groups, namely, polymers bearing amide groups, ether groups, vinyl ether groups and hydrophilic polymers bearing hydrophobic groups. These novel thermoresponsive nanogels provide effective drug delivery systems and tissue regeneration constructs for treating patients in many clinical applications, such as targeted, sustained and controlled release.

Stereocomplex Poly(Lactic Acid) Amphiphilic Conetwork Gel with Temperature and pH Dual Sensitivity

A novel stereocomplex poly(lactic acid) amphiphilic conetwork gel with temperature and pH dual sensitivity was synthesized by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and free radical copolymerization. The chemical structure and composition of hydrogel were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The temperature and pH sensitivity and good amphiphilicity of hydrogel were studied using digital photos, the swelling ratios and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The thermal stability and mechanical properties of hydrogel were studied by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and dynamic viscoelastic spectrometer. The results indicated that the hydrogel has amphiphilicity, temperature and pH sensitivity, good thermal stability and mechanical strength.

Synthesis of Thermo-Responsive Block-Graft Copolymer Based on PCL and PEG Analogs, and Preparation of Hydrogel via Click Chemistry

Thermo-responsive cross-linkable mPEG-b-[PCL-g-(MEO2MA-co-OEGMA)]-b-mPEG was synthesized by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Then, the cross-linkable block-graft copolymer was used to prepare hydrogel via a copper-catalyzed 1,3-dipolar azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction. The chemical structure and composition of copolymer were characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The self-assembly behaviors of the copolymer in aqueous solution were studied by UV spectrophotometer, fluorescence probes, the surface tension method, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. The results proved that the copolymer has excellent solubility and better temperature response. The three-dimensional network structure of the gels, observed by scanning electron microscopy at different temperatures, indicated that the gels have temperature response.

A thermo-/pH-responsive hydrogel (PNIPAM-PDMA-PAA) with diverse nanostructures and gel behaviors as a general drug carrier for drug release

The aim of this research was to develop thermo- and pH-responsive hydrogels based on H-bonds for the sustained release of the small-molecule model drug Methylene Blue (MB).
