Eco-Friendly AMPS-Doped Polyaniline/Urethane-Methacrylate Coating as a Corrosion Protection Coating: Electrochemical, Surface, Theoretical, and Thermodynamic Studies

In this study, 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS)-doped polyaniline (PANI) fibers were used as polymerizable smart anticorrosive agents to prepare eco-friendly UV-curable anticorrosive coatings. For this purpose, AMPS-doped PANI fibers were synthesized through chemical oxidative interfacial polymerization. The size and chemical structure of the prepared conducting fibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, ¹H NMR, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses. As a binder for the prepared conducting fibers, an eco-friendly fluorinated urethane-methacrylate dispersion was synthesized and fully characterized using FTIR analysis. Subsequently, various amounts of the synthesized fibers were mixed with the fluorinated binder to prepare UV-curable anticorrosive coatings. The physicochemical interactions between the PANI fibers and UV-curable binder were studied thoroughly using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analyses and measurement of the gel contents and adhesion strength of the prepared composite coatings. The corrosion resistance performance of the prepared coatings was evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis, and the obtained results revealed that the presence of 2 wt % of the AMPS-doped PANI fibers significantly enhanced the corrosion resistance of the obtained coating. In addition, the corrosion layers of the coatings were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, which indicated that the AMPS-doped PANI fibers changed the composition of the corrosion product layer. To expand these attempts, this study also explores the interaction of AMPS-doped PANI fibers with the Fe(100) surface using density functional theory as well as atom in molecule calculations. All of the obtained results proved that the outstanding corrosion protection performance of the prepared composite coatings originated from exceptional chemical interactions between the unsaturated doping agents of the prepared PANI fibers and the UV-cured polymer.

A New Strategy for the Synthesis of Fluorinated Polyurethane

An alternating fluorinated copolymer based on chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) and butyl vinyl ether (BVE) was synthesized by RAFT/MADIX living/controlled polymerization in the presence of S-benzyl O-ethyl dithiocarbonate (BEDTC). Then, using the obtained poly(CTFE-alt-BVE) as a macro chain transfer agent (macro-CTA), a block copolymer was prepared by chain extension polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc). After a basic methanolysis process, the poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) block was transferred into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). Finally, a novel fluorinated polyurethane with good surface properties due to the mobility of the flexible fluorinated polymer chains linked to the network was obtained via reaction of the copolymer bearing the blocks of PVA with isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as a cross-linking agent.

Role of the Oxethyl Unit in the Structure of Vegetable Oil-Based Plasticizer for PVC: An Efficient Strategy to Enhance Compatibility and Plasticization

Developing vegetable oil-derived primary plasticizers for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is still a challenge because of their insufficient compatibility. As described in this work, we report the synthesis of plasticizers through the esterification of polyethylene glycol methyl ether and dimer acid, in which dimer acid is renewable material prepared via a two-step reaction (1) the hydrolysis of fatty acids from soybean oil at 70 °C and (2) subsequent Diels-Alder reaction at 250 °C. The resulting plasticizers, dimer acid-derived polyethylene glycol methyl ether esters (DA-2n, 2n = 2, 4, 6 or 8 referring to the number of oxethyl units per molecule), were blended with PVC. It was found that the tensile properties, transparency, and thermal stability of plasticized PVC (PVC-DA-2n) increased significantly with an increase in the number of oxyethyl units. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis revealed that its good compatibility can be attributed to the strong interaction between oxyethyl units and PVC. As the number of the oxyethyl units of plasticizer increased, the glass transition temperature (T_g) of the corresponding plasticized PVC samples decreased from 62.3 (PVC-DA-2) to 35.4 °C (PVC-DA-8). Owing to the excellent plasticization of DA-8, the performances of PVC-DA-8 were comparable or better than that of the PVC plasticized using commercial dioctyl terephthalate (DOTP). The simple but efficient method of this study provides a new avenue for the preparation of vegetable oil-based plasticizers for PVC.
