The longitudinal trajectories of teacher burnout and vigour across the scholar year: The predictive role of emotional intelligence

Musculoskeletal disorders and quality of life for Chilean teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic at the academic year-end

Introduction

Schoolteachers have reported multiple demands contributing to poor perceptions regarding their quality of life and high rates of musculoskeletal disorders. However, there are few studies about the association between musculoskeletal disorders and quality of life from the end of the academic period during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Objective

Evaluate musculoskeletal disorders rates and their association with quality of life perceptions among teachers from the last academic period during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Participants and methods

A total sample of 161 Chilean schoolteachers was included in a cross-sectional study musculoskeletal disorders prevalence was evaluated using the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire, and quality of life was evaluated through the Short-Form 12 Health Survey Instrument. A logistic regression was applied to evaluate the association between musculoskeletal disorders and quality of life perceptions adjusted by gender, age, and contract type.

Results

98% of teachers have suffered from some type of musculoskeletal disorders during the last 12 months, and 64% have had six or more painful regions. Women showed a higher musculoskeletal disorders rate than men. The group of teachers with the most musculoskeletal disorders (≥p50) saw significantly greater risk of low scores on the physical (OR: 2.16; p < 0.05) and mental components (OR: 4.86; p < 0.01) of quality of life, regardless of gender, age, and contract type.

Conclusion

High musculoskeletal disorders rates suggest that preventive and informative actions must be taken regarding these disorders in order to protect teachers' mental and physical health, considering the effects of the school year and the COVID-19 health crisis.

The role of teachers' socio-emotional competence in reducing burnout through increased work engagement

Introduction

Research has highlighted the relevance of socio-emotional competence in buffering the harmful impacts of perceived stress on the psychological facets of the teaching profession. The purpose of this paper is to innovatively investigate the relationships between perceived stress, work engagement, and burnout in a single comprehensive model, when considering the potential role that socio-emotional competence plays in mitigating the adverse impact of perceived stress on burnout.

Methods

A total of 276 Italian in-service teachers (mean age = 46.6 ± 9.9 years) completed quantitative self-report measures of perceived stress, socio-emotional competence, work engagement, and burnout. Data were analyzed by using a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach.

Results

All fit indexes supported the model's full acceptance and suggested that teachers' socio-emotional competence reduced the effect of perceived stress on the risk of burnout by increasing their level of work engagement.

Discussion

The implications of the findings are discussed in terms of promoting interventions that target not only stress reduction but also foster teachers' socio-emotional competence in order to maintain a good level of work engagement and reduce the effect of stress on burnout.

The Symptom Network Structure of Teachers' Burnout and Its Connection to Psychological Capital

Background

Teacher burnout is characterized by emotional and physical exhaustion resulting from excessive work-related stress. Previous research based on traditional latent variable theory has revealed a significant negative relationship between TB and psychological capital (PsyCap). This study explored the complex symptoms of TB and the contact points of PsyCap in reducing TB using psychometric network analysis.

Methods

A total of 3991 teachers completed the burnout subscale of the Professional Quality of Life and Psychological Capital Scale.

Results

The results showed that: (a) In the TB network, the core symptoms displayed by teachers due to burnout are difficulty feeling "I am a very caring person", "I am happy", and "I am the person I always wanted to be"; (b) The TB-PsyCap network was closely connected, and the symptoms affected each other. PsyCap affected the TB network through "I feel optimistic and happy almost every day" and "I often feel that there is a future as a teacher"; (c) PsyCap's bridge symptoms had a negative impact on TB, and PsyCap may reduce TB primarily through optimistic, hopeful dimensions.

Conclusion and Implications

Psychometric network analysis helps us understand the complex symptoms of TB and the contact points of PsyCap in reducing TB. This study offers valuable insights into the prevention of, and intervention in, burnout within the teaching community.

Does Burnout Decrease With Teacher Professional Identity Among Teachers in China?

In China, burnout is common among kindergarten, primary, and secondary school teachers. Previous studies have demonstrated that professional identity positively affects the prevention of burnout among teachers. However, studies on the mediating mechanisms behind and the moderating factors affecting this relationship remain scarce. In this study, the mediating role of work engagement as well as the moderating roles of self-efficacy and perceived organizational support in these relationships was examined. A total of 3,147 kindergarten, primary, and secondary school teachers completed self-reported questionnaires. SPSS 21.0 was used to conduct data analyses, and ordinary least square (OLS) regression was used to conduct mediation and moderation analyses. Results found that the relationship between teacher professional identity and burnout was partially mediated by work engagement. Through work engagement, teacher professional identity had the biggest predictive effects on burnout when the scores for self-efficacy and perceived organizational support were high. Implications for preventing burnout among teachers in the future were provided.

"It Hits the Spot": The Impact of a Professional Development Program on English Teacher Wellbeing in Underdeveloped Regions

In poor and remote areas, teachers frequently encounter serious ongoing challenges and experience teacher exhaustion due to the uneven distribution of resource supply, and a shortage of professional support. Maintaining teachers' professional wellbeing in an unfavorable teaching environment has become a major challenge. The current study explores teachers' professional wellbeing in the context of a five-month-long professional development program designed for teachers in areas of deep poverty in China. This study adopted the method of narrative enquiry and collected diaries written before and after the program from 46 primary school English teachers. Based on the manually analyzed data, it was found that teachers' overall wellbeing at work was enhanced in terms of their professional meaning, engagement, and achievement. The systematic analysis of the diaries helped to better understand how the program exerted such an effect on teachers' learning experiences and their wellbeing.
