Abstract
Two new spiroindolinonaphthoxazine derivatives with an electron-accepting styrylquinolizinium or styrylcoralyne unit, respectively, were synthesized, and the influence of such an arylvinyl substituent on the chemical and photochemical properties of the compounds was investigated. Specifically, these spirooxazines turned out to be resistant towards the photoinduced merocyanine formation, and the irradiation with light mainly led to photodegradation of the substrates. However, it was shown by colorimetric and fluorimetric screening assays as well as by detailed NMR spectroscopic and mass spectrometric studies that the addition of particular metal ions (Cu2+, Fe3+, and to a certain extent Hg2+) initially induced a ring-opening reaction that was irreversibly followed by a fast ring closure-deprotonation-oxidation sequence to give styryl-substituted naphthoxazole derivatives as the products quantitatively. For the quinolizinium-substituted spirooxazine derivative, the formation of the respective oxidation product caused the development of a broad absorption band between 425 nm and 500 nm and a new emission band at λfl = 628 nm, so that it may be employed as a selective chemosensor or chemodosimeter for the colorimetric and fluorimetric detection of Cu2+ and Fe3+.

Abstract
A triazole-derivatized, spiro-indoline-linked, 1,3-di-derivative of calix[4]arene (L) has been synthesized to take advantage of its ion-binding capability in the ring-open form. Indeed, the spiro-indoline moiety is well known for its photochromic, acidochromic, and metallochromic properties. Therefore, the L has been explored for Cu2+ binding, cell imaging, and anticancer activity of the corresponding complex since Cu2+ complexes are known for such activity. The conversion from the closed to open form of L is expedited by light or proton, while the metal ion can open as well as stabilize it. The open form of L showed binding of Cu2+ ratiometrically as demonstrated by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. This leads to the formation of 1:1 complex with a binding constant of (6.9 ± 2.3) × 105 M-1, with the lowest detection limit being 1.9 nM. In the complex, the Cu2+ is bound by two triazole-N and two phenolic-O groups resulting in a distorted tetrahedral coordination core of CuN2O2 as demonstrated based on density functional theory studies. To form such coordination core, the arms underwent considerable changes in some of the dihedral angles. The binding of Cu2+ to L induces self-assembly of L by varying from simple particles to rodlike structures when bound to Cu2+. The on-off fluorescence intensity of L and its Cu2+-bound species are responsible for imaging cancer cells. The L shows red fluorescence in MDA-MB-231 cancer cells by targeting mitochondria as proved based on the colocalization study carried out using MitoTracker Green. While the L alone is nontoxic to cancer cells, the presence of Cu2+ brings cell death to an extent of 90% with an IC50 value of 165 nM by bringing a substantial quench in the fluorescence of L. A shift of population from G0/G1 and G2M phases to the Sub-G1 phase was observed as the concentration of the complex was increased, indicating cell death as studied by fluorescence-activated cell sorting. Thus, the present work clearly proved that a calix[4]arene functionalized at the lower rim with spiro-indoline moieities when complexed with Cu2+ acts as an efficient anticancer agent and is capable of imaging cancer cells.

Abstract
This critical review focuses on the development of photochromic compounds as sensors for cations, anions, and biologically important molecules. The review commences with a brief description of photochromism and the strategies to exploit photochromic molecular switches' properties for sensing application. This is followed by a summary of photoswitchable receptors emerged to date and classified according to the photochromic structure they are based on. These include azobenzenes, fulgides, dithienylethenes, dihydroindolizines, chromenes and spiropyrans.

Abstract
The ability of a carboxylic acid functionalized spiropyran, SP, to act as a reversible and selective receptor for metal ions has been systematically examined. A series of spectroscopic measurements, combined with single-crystal X-ray diffraction have been employed in order to determine metal-ion sensitivity and selectivity, binding constants, solution compositions, binding kinetics as well as solid-state structure of a metal-complex of this ligand. This molecule acts as a chelating ligand and binds to metal ions using a triad of functionalities and will release the metal ion by application of visible light. Altering the complex from ZnCl(2) and Zn(ClO(4))(2), leads to only a small change in the complex absorption maxima from 494 to 492 nm, but produced a drastic increase in the sensitivity for the zinc(II) ion. Fluorescence spectroscopy was employed to establish that the detection limit for Zn(II) is approximately 3 x 10(-7) M for Zn(ClO(4))(2). The counterion also influences binding constants and the equilibrium constants for Cu(ClO(4))(2) and CuCl(2) are K = 3.37 x 10(4) M(-1) to K = 2.04 x 10(3) M(-1), respectively. Additionally, in the presence of perchlorate, the spiropyran-Cu complex formation is fast enough to allow for real-time naked eye detection of this metal ion in less than three minutes; the formation of other metal complexes takes between 50 minutes to 2 hours. Finally, the single-crystal structure determination of the SP-zinc chloride complex shows that the Zn(II) ion displays a distorted square-pyramidal arrangement, and neighbouring metal ions are bound together into a 1-D coordination polymer with a hydrophilic core, surrounded by hydrophobic 'cladding'.

Abstract
The photochromic, thermochromic and metallochromic behaviour of a series of three spiro[indoline-8-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-benzopyrans] has been investigated. The thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of their thermal equilibrium between the ring-closed (spiro) and ring-opened (merocyanine) isomeric forms have been determined using UV-Vis absorption and (1)H NMR spectroscopies. By adding Co(ii) and Ni(ii) ions in acetonitrile solution, 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 metal : merocyanine complexes are formed simultaneously. Using appropriate numerical methods, the kinetic analysis of the complexation allowed us to determine accurately key thermodynamic and spectroscopic parameters of the metal complexes. Results showed that the complexation strength is very sensitive to the size of the indoline nitrogen substituent. Complexation can be reversed by shining white light on the coloured complexes which regenerates the inactive spiropyran form, and releases the metallic ion; hence, these systems display fully reversible negative photochromism. The Zn(ii) complexes exhibit intense fluorescence in the 600-800 nm wavelength range. All these behaviours make these spiropyrans bearing benzothiazole heterocycles promising building blocks for the future construction of photodynamic chemosensors for transition metal ions.

Abstract
A light-controlled reversible binding switch based on photochromic 3H-naphtho[2,1-b]pyran is under development for studying cellular oscillatory calcium signals. The binding affinities of the closed and open forms of substituted naphthopyran 1 for Ca(2+), Mg(2+), and Sr(2+) in buffer were determined. The photochemically ring-opened form of the receptor exhibited increased affinity compared to the thermally stable closed form of the receptor. The binding affinity difference for Ca(2+) was approximately 77-fold at pH 7.6.
