Abstract
The current study on the antioxidant activity of Kojic acid and 3-hydroxypyridine-4-one derivatives was performed by implementation of density functional theory calculations with the B3LYP hybrid functional and the 6-311++ G** basis set in Polarizable Continuum Model. Compounds under evaluation were previously synthesized by our research group. The DPPH scavenging effect and IC 50 values of them in mM concentrations were evaluated. Subsequently, various electronic and energetic descriptors such as HOMO and LUMO energy gaps, bonding dissociation enthalpy of OH bond, ionization potential, electron affinity, hardness, and softness, NBOs and spin density of radical and neutral species were used to study antioxidant properties of investigated compounds. The computations detected two compounds, HP3 and HP4 , with significant antioxidant activity. Energetic descriptors indicated that SPLET mechanism is preferred over than other antioxidant mechanism and computational results were in accordance with the experimental results.

Abstract
A molecular electrostatic potential (MESP) topographical study has been conducted for a variety of conjugated hydrocarbons at B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level of theory to understand their π-conjugation features and aromaticity. The value of MESP minimum (Vm) is related to the localized and delocalized distribution of π-electron density. The Vm values are located interior to the rings in polycyclic benzenoid hydrocarbons (PBHs), whereas they lie outside the boundary of the rings in antiaromatic and in fused systems consisting of aromatic and antiaromatic moieties. The Vm points lie on top and bottom of the π-regions in linear polyenes and annulenes, while a degenerate distribution of CPs around the midpoint region of triple bonds is observed in alkynes. The eigenvalues λ1, λ2, and λ3 of the Hessian matrix at Vm(MESP minima) are used to define the aromatic character of the cyclic structures. The eigenvalues follow the trend λ1 ≫ λ2 > λ3 ≅ 0 in PBHs, λ1 > λ2 > λ3 ≅ 0 in linear polyenes, and λ1 > λ2 > λ3 ≠ 0 in antiaromatic systems. The difference in the aromatic character of PBHs from that of benzene is related to the deviations Δλ1, Δλ2, and Δλ3. The total deviation ∑i=13Δλi is found to be ≤ 0.011 au for all aromatic systems and lies between 0.011 and 0.035 au for all nonaromatic systems. For antiaromatic systems, its value is found to be above 0.035 au. Further, ∑i=13Δλi gives a direct interpretation of Clar's aromatic sextet structures for PBHs. In summary, MESP topography mapping is a powerful technique to quantify the localized and delocalized π-electron distribution in a variety of unsaturated hydrocarbon systems.

Abstract
In the context of the mitigation of the biological effects of internal radionuclide contamination and for efficient decorporation, the design and development of efficient chelators for lanthanide and actinide metal ions has become a central issue. The pioneering work of Raymond and coworkers (Chem. Rev., 2003, 103, 4207-4282) led to the development of siderophore-related hydroxypyridinonate ligands for possible treatment of internalized radionuclides. However, the structure-function relationship of Ln/An bound to these ligands, particularly the bonding and coordination aspects are not clearly understood at the atomic level. Here, we have investigated the structure, binding and energetics of trivalent and tetravalent Ln/An (Sm3+, Eu3+, Am3+, Cm3+, Th4+, Pu4+) ions with spermine-based octadentate hydroxypyridinonate chelators, namely 3,4,3-LI(1,2-HOPO) and its 3,3,3 variant, using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). Furthermore, we have performed orbital and density based analyses to elucidate the nature of bonding in these complexes. In accordance with the experimental stability constant, we found the maximum binding free energy for An4+ (Pu4+, Th4+) as compared to trivalent metal ions. CDA and ECDA analyses along with orbital-based population analyses confirmed the higher ligand to metal charge transfer for An4+ than for trivalent metal ions. Furthermore, the aromaticity index analysis suggested the presence of crucial chelatoaromatic stabilization for all these metal ions with the maximum for An4+. QTAIM descriptors indicated that the binding of An/Ln with the hard oxygen donor of the ligands is of the donor-acceptor type but a higher degree of covalency exists for actinides as compared to lanthanides. Furthermore, QTAIM and molecular orbital analysis confirmed that such covalency is of the energy-driven type and strictly originates from the orbital mixing event of An-5f orbitals with the ligand orbitals.

Abstract
Recent advances in experimental and theoretical studies ofcarbo-benzene derivatives, along with the proposition of a generalization of the definition of aromaticity to the two-membered π-rings of triple bonds, suggest relevance for the notion of “carbo-aromaticity”.

Abstract
AbstractChelatoaromaticity (aromaticity of chelate complexes) has been recently recognized as an important property influencing the stability of chelate compounds. In this paper, aromaticity of various forms of 8-hydroxyquinoline (anion, neutral molecule, zwitterion and cation) as well as its chelate complexes with magnesium and aluminium ions are investigated. Aromatic properties of these compounds are analyzed using several aromaticity indices based on energetic, geometric, magnetic and electronic physical manifestations of this phenomenon. Results of performed calculations have shown different aromatic properties for the two rings (pyridine and benzene) occurring in the studied ligand. Aromaticity of these rings in metal complexes of 8-hydroxyquinoline is significantly higher than that in corresponding ligand anion. This means that during complexation the aromaticity of the ligand increases and the chelatoaromatic effect stabilizes the studied metal complexes. In contrast, metallocyclic rings of studied metal complexes have non-aromatic properties, and, consequently, the metallocyclic ring is not stabilized by chelatoaromaticity. We conclude that, in the complex, every 8-hydroxyquinoline unit and the metal ion are separated p-electronic systems.
