Synthesis and characterization of poly(L-lactic acid)-poly(?-caprolactone) multiblock copolymers by melt polycondensation

Functionalized Boron Nitride Nanosheets/Poly(l-lactide) Nanocomposites and Their Crystallization Behavior

In this work, hydroxyl-functionalized boron nitride nanosheet (OH-BNNS) was prepared and was blended with poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) to yield PLLA/OH-BNNS nanocomposites with excellent dispersion of OH-BNNS via the interaction of carbonyl in PLLA and hydroxyl in OH-BNNS. The effects of OH-BNNS on the crystallization and melting behaviors, isothermal crystallization kinetics, macroscopic crystal morphology and crystal structure of PLLA were studied by means of various techniques. The addition of OH-BNNS nanofillers can effectively accelerate the crystallization of PLLA and enhance the nucleation density, leading to a smaller spherulite size, increased crystallinity, a more obvious crystallization peak upon cooling but weakened cold crystallization behavior upon heating. Low OH-BNNS loading can increase the relative content of α-crystal, but the relative content of less perfect α′-crystal is increased at high OH-BNNS loading due to the strong interaction between PLLA and OH-BNNS.

A versatile strategy for the synthesis and mechanical property manipulation of networked biodegradable polymeric materials composed of well-defined alternating hard and soft domains

Networked materials composed of well-defined alternating domains of two types of biodegradable polymers, hard poly(l-lactide) and soft poly(ε-caprolactone), were successfully synthesized.

Studies on Preparation of Poly(3,4-Dihydroxyphenylalanine)-Polylactide Copolymers and the Effect of the Structure of the Copolymers on Their Properties

Properties of copolymers are generally influenced by the structure of the monomers and polymers. For the purpose of understanding the effect of polymer structure on the properties, two kinds of copolymers, poly(3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine)-g-polylactide and poly(3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine)-b-polylactide (PDOPA-g-PLA and PDOPA-b-PLA) were designed and prepared by ring-opening polymerization of lactide with pre-prepared PDOPA as the initiator and the amidation of the functional PLA and PDOPA oligomer, respectively. The molecular weight and composition of the copolymers could be adjusted by changing the molar ratio of LA and DOPA and were confirmed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR) spectra. The obtained copolymers with graft and block structures showed high solubility even in common organic solvents. The effects of the graft and block structures on the thermal and degradation properties were also detected. The PDOPA-g-PLA copolymers showed higher thermal stability than the PDOPA-b-PLA copolymers, due to the PDOPA-g-PLA copolymers with regular structure and strong π-π stacking interactions among the intermolecular and intramolecular chains. In addition, the degradation results showed that the PDOPA-g-PLA copolymers and the copolymers with higher DOPA composition had quicker degradation speeds. Interestingly, both two kinds of copolymers, after degradation, became undissolved in the organic solvents because of the oxidation and crosslinking formation of the catechol groups in the DOPA units during degradation in alkaline solution. Moreover, fluorescent microscopy results showed good biocompatibility of the PDOPA-g-PLA and PDOPA-b-PLA copolymers. The PDOPA and PLA copolymers have the potential applications to the biomedical and industrial fields.

Synthesis, structure and properties of poly(L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) statistical copolymers

Four poly(L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLCL) copolymers were synthesized at 120, 130, 140 and 150 °C by ring opening polymerization using stannous octoate catalyst at a 2000:1 comonomer:catalyst ratio. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and (1)H NMR measurements were performed to determine the molecular weight, composition and chain microstructure of copolymers of L-lactide(LA):ε-caprolactone(CL) synthesized using 90:10, 80:20, 75:25 and 70:30 feed ratios. The overall conversion of these PLCL copolymers was in the range of 80%-90% leading to weight average molecular weights (M(w)) between 98,500 and 226,000 g mol(-1) depending on feed composition and polymerization temperature. At temperatures lower than 140 °C, the incorporation of CL units into polymer chains was incomplete because of the low reactivity of CL, thus at 120 °C the copolymer composition was difficult to control obtaining more LA in the copolymer than the desired, hence the blocky character of PLCL copolymers also increased. At 150 °C the catalyst was less effective and the molecular weights of the copolymers took lower values. A temperature of 140 °C was established as optimal to obtain highest yields and molecular weight. The number average crystallizable lactide sequence lengths (l(LA)) shifted from 6.5 to 16.7 LA repeat units for PLCL polymerized at 140 °C while the randomness character (R) value shifted from 0.4 for polymerization at 130 °C to 0.6, at 150 °C. Increasing the LA content in the copolymers the glass transition temperature and the crystallizability and melting temperature of PLCLs approached to that of PLLA homopolymer. The aging sensitivity of PLCLs increased with CL content. A double T(g) behavior due to phase separation associated to crystallizing LA blocks was observed during aging. The mechanical properties, however, evolved toward the PLLA character when the molar content of LA in PLCL was increased from 66% to 90%, observing a shift from an elastomeric thermoplastic behavior to that of a glassy plastic, reflected by an increase in tensile modulus (from 12.0 to 1343.1 MPa) and a decrease in strain recovery after break (from 93.5% to 25.0%). Small amounts of CL content in the copolymers produced large improvements in their deformability with regard to PLLA. In addition, thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated that PLCLs are more stable to thermal degradation than PLLA and they undergo a more complex degradation mechanism than those of the corresponding homopolymers.

Consequences of polylactide stereochemistry on the properties of polylactide-polymenthide-polylactide thermoplastic elastomers

A series of polylactide-polymenthide-polylactide triblock copolymers containing either amorphous poly(D,L-lactide) or semicrystalline, enantiopure poly(L-lactide) or poly(D-lactide) end segments were synthesized. Small-angle X-ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry data were consistent with microphase separation of these materials. The Young's moduli and ultimate tensile strengths of the semicrystalline triblock copolymers were 2- and 3-fold greater, respectively, than their amorphous analogs. Symmetric (50:50) and asymmetric (95:5) blends of the triblock copolymers containing two different enantomeric forms of the polylactide segments formed stereocomplex crystallites, as revealed by wide-angle X-ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry. Compared to the enantiopure analogs, these blends exhibited similar ultimate elongations and tensile strengths, but significantly increased Young's moduli. Collectively, these results demonstrate that the properties of these new biorenewable thermoplastic elastomers can be systematically modulated by changing the stereochemistry of the polylactide end blocks.
