Abstract
Chiral polymeric particles (CPPs) were studied extensively in recent years due to their importance in pharmaceutical applications. Here, nanosized CPPs were synthesized and applied as catalysts for direct asymmetric aldol reaction. The CPPs were prepared by miniemulsion or inverse miniemulsion based on various chiral amino acid derivatives and characterized by dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy. The nanoparticles with spherical structure between 250 and 400 nm and high chiral surface area were used as catalysts in the aldol reaction at room temperature without additional solvent. l-tryptophan gave the highest enantiomeric excess, >86% with similar catalytic performance four times.

Abstract
A series of pH-responsive random copolymers comprised of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and tert-butyl carbamate (Boc)-protected phenylalanine methacryloyloxyethyl ester (Boc-Phe-EMA) were synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization in N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) at 70 °C. The synthesized copolymers were comprehensively characterized using a combination of techniques, including 1 H NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography (SEC). Reactivity of each monomers towards controlled radical polymerization was evaluated by determining the reactivity ratios by virtue of extended Kelen-Tüdös method at high conversions revealed the higher reactivity of non-modified HEMA (rHEMA =1.03) in contrast to Boc-Phe-EMA (rBoc-Phe-EMA =0.48). Furthermore, the expulsion of the Boc-groups resulted copolymers with ionizable pendant primary ammonium and hydroxyl groups. To understand the glass transition behaviours of homo- and co-polymers, differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) measurements were carried out. The effect of HEMA content on the pH-sensitivity of the copolymers in aqueous medium was investigated through turbidity measurements. Finally, the counteranion exchange from trifluoroacetate to chloride provided copolymers with enhanced water solubility and unaltered phase transition pH.

Abstract
The precise synthesis of polymers derived from alkyl lactate ester acrylates is reported for the first time. Kinetic experiments were conducted to demonstrate that Cu(0) wire-catalyzed single electron transfer-living radical polymerization (SET-LRP) in alcohols at 25 °C provides a green methodology for the LRP of this forgotten class of biobased monomers. The acrylic derivative of ethyl lactate (EL) solvent and homologous structures with methyl and n-butyl ester were polymerized with excellent control over molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and chain-end functionality. Kinetics plots in conventional alcohols such as ethanol and methanol were first order in the monomer, with molecular weight increasing linearly with conversion. However, aqueous EL mixtures were found to be more suitable than pure EL to mediate the SET-LRP process. The near-quantitative monomer conversion and high bromine chain-end functionality, demonstrated by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight analysis, further allowed the preparation of innovative biobased block copolymers containing rubbery poly(ethyl lactate acrylate) poly(ELA) sequences. For instance, the poly(ELA)- b-poly(glycerol acrylate) block copolymer self-assembled in water to form stable micelles with chiral lactic acid-derived block-forming micellar core as confirmed by the pyrene-probe-based fluorescence technique. Dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy measurements revealed the nanosize spherical morphology for these biobased aggregates.

Abstract
Over the past few years, chiral supramolecular assemblies have been successfully used for recognition, sensing and enantioselective transformations. Several approaches are available to control chirality of discrete assemblies (e.g., cages and capsules), but few are efficient in assuring chirality for micellar aggregates. Optically active amino acid-derived surfactants are commonly used to generate chiral spherical micelles. To circumvent this limitation, we benefited from the uniaxial growth of spherical micelles into long cylindrical micelles usually called wormlike or giant micelles, upon the addition of cosolutes. This paper describes the unprecedented formation of chiral giant micelles in aqueous solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) upon increasing addition of enantiopure sodium salt of 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (Na-binaphtholate) as a cosolute. Depending on the concentrations of CTAB and Na-binaphtholate, chiral gel-like systems are obtained. The transition from spherical to giant micellar structures was probed using rheology, cryo-transmission electron microscopy, polarimetry, and electronic circular dichroism (CD). CD can be effectively used to monitor the incorporation of Na-binaphtholate into the micelle palisade as well as to determine its transition to giant micellar structures. Our approach expands the scope for chirality induction in micellar aggregates bringing the possibility to generate "smart" chiral systems and an alternative asymmetric chiral environment to perform enantioselective transformations.

Abstract
AbstractTwo monomers of (D/L), (+/−)-N-methacryloyloxyethyl-N′-2-hydroxybutyl(urea) methacrylate (D/L-MABU) type were prepared and further polymerized through free radical polymerization with optically active monomers containing phenylalanine sequences such as N-acryloyl-(D/L), (−/+)-phenylalanine (A-D/L-Phe). The resulting copolymers, i.e., poly[N-acryloyl-(D/L), (−/+)-phenylalanine-co-(D/L), (+/−)-N-methacryloyloxyethyl-N′-2-hydroxybutyl(urea)], A-D/L-Phe-co-D/L-MABU, were characterized by FT-IR, 1D/2D NMR (1H and 13C), UV-vis, and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopies, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The copolymers obtained with a molar fraction of 0.76: 0.24 / 0.64: 0.36 monomer units had optical rotation values of −25° and +15°, respectively. Upon chemical modification of the phenylalanine-based copolymers with fluorescein-isothiocyanate, new fluorescent copolyacrylates (A-D/L-Phe-co-D/L-MABU-F) were synthesized and further studied for pH measurements in DMF solutions using HCl and NaOH 10−1M. It was found that sterioselectivity of the A-L-Phe-co-L-MABU-F copolymer is higher than of its dextro-form, especially at basic pH.

Abstract
Leucine/isoleucine side chain polymers are of interest due to their hydrophobicity and reported role in the formation of α-helical structures. The synthesis and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization of amino acid-based chiral monomers, namely Boc-L-leucine methacryloyloxyethyl ester (Boc-L-Leu-HEMA, 1a), Boc-L-leucine acryloyloxyethyl ester (Boc-L-Leu-HEA, 1b), Boc-L-isoleucine methacryloyloxyethyl ester (Boc-L-Ile-HEMA, 1c), and Boc-L-isoleucine acryloyloxyethyl ester (Boc-L-Ile-HEA, 1d), are reported. The controlled nature of the polymerization of the said chiral monomers in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF) at 70 °C is evident from the formation of narrow polydisperse polymers, the molecular weight controlled by the monomer/chain transfer agent (CTA) molar ratio and the linear relationship between molecular weight and monomer conversion. The resulting well-defined polymers were used as macro-CTAs to prepare corresponding diblock copolymers by RAFT polymerization of methyl (meth)acrylate monomers. Deprotection of Boc groups in the homopolymers and block copolymers under acidic conditions produced cationic, pH-responsive polymers with primary amine moieties at the side chains. The optical activity of the homopolymers and block copolymers were studied using circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and specific rotation measurements. The self-assembling nature of the block copolymers to produce highly ordered structures was illustrated through dynamic light scattering (DLS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies. The side chain amine functionality instills pH-responsive behavior, which makes these cationic polymers attractive candidates for drug delivery applications, as well as for conjugation of biomolecules.

Abstract
We have prepared a range of well-defined copolymers of styrene and L-proline functionalized styrene (5-11 kDa) using reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization techniques and explored their use in supported catalysis. Upon deprotection of the L-proline functionalities, the solution self-assembly of these copolymers was investigated in mixed solvent systems. The resulting assemblies were characterized by dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy (on graphene oxide substrates, along with cryo-TEM and tomography), and scanning electron microscopy. The application of these functional assemblies as supported catalysts for the aldol condensation reaction was explored using cyclohexanone and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde. The rate and selectivity of solution catalysis in our self-assembled system were comparable to those of L-proline, and a significant advantage of our system was that the polymer support could be utilized at lower catalyst loadings with comparable activity and also could be recycled a number of times while maintaining activity and selectivity.

Abstract
There is great current interest in the design of robust synthetic polymers for the preparation of novel functional, well-defined, biocompatible and tailorable materials for a range of possible applications. In this work we have used reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization to prepare chiral and responsive amphiphilic block copolymers (based on polyphenylalanine acrylamide), which can be assembled at different pHs to form well-defined nanostructures. The morphology and size of the derived block polymers were explored using TEM, DLS and SLS measurements, while stability was examined by fluorescence and NMR spectroscopy. The application of these chiral and responsive nanostructures in the resolution of hydrophilic racemic amino acids has also been explored.

Abstract
Amphiphilic block copolymers were prepared via reversible–addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and their synthesis, cross-linking, and degradation were studied using on-line monitoring. The focus of this work is the systematic alteration of the hydrophobic block using copolymers based on 5′-O-methacryloyluridine (MAU) and styrene at different compositions to determine the effect of the copolymer composition on the properties of the micelle. A poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) (PEGMA) macroRAFT agent was chain extended with a mixture of styrene and MAU. In both systems, an increasing fraction of styrene was found to reduce the rate of polymerization, but the functionality of the RAFT system was always maintained. The amphiphilic block copolymers were dialyzed against water to generate micelles with sizes between 17 and 25 nm according to dynamic light scattering (DLS). Increasing styrene content lead to smaller micelles (determined by DLS and transmission electron microscopy) and to lower critical micelle concentrations, which was measured using surface tensiometry. The micelles were further stabilized via core-cross-linking using bis(2-methacroyloxyethyl) disulfide as crosslinker. NMR analysis revealed a faster consumption of crosslinker with higher styrene content. These stable cross-linked micelles were investigated regarding their ability to degrade in the presence of dithiothreitol as a model reductant. Increasing the styrene content resulted in a faster degradation of the cross-linked micelles into unimers.

Abstract
A versatile synthetic strategy has been developed which enables the facile incorporation of cleavable functional groups, i.e., esters, thioesters, and disulfides, into the carbon-carbon backbone of vinyl-based polymers. Through the synthesis of novel cyclic monomers, RAFT-mediated radical ring-opening copolymerizations with traditional vinyl monomers such as methyl methacrylate, N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate lead to the introduction of controlled degradability into these widely used vinyl copolymer systems. An additional benefit of this strategy is the inherent versatility available through the incorporation of cyclic monomers containing diverse functional groups such as esters, thioesters, disulfides, and silyl ether units that allow degradation under basic/acidic, reductive, or enzymatic conditions. By integrating multiple, orthogonal cyclic monomers into linear copolymer backbones, well-defined systems with programmable degradation profiles are obtained which allows for tunable, selective, and stepwise degradation of the vinyl polymer backbones.
