Abstract
A series of novel amphiphilic ABA-type poly(tridecafluorooctylacrylate)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(tridecafluorooctylacrylate) (henceforth referred to as p-TDFA-PEG-p-TDFA) triblock oligomers were successfully synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using well-defined Br-PEG-Br as macroinitiator and copper as catalyst. The block oligomers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and 1H and 19F nuclear magnetic resonances (NMR). Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) showed that the block oligomers have been obtained with narrow molecular weight distributions of 1.22–1.33. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was carried out to confirm the attachment of p-TDFA-PEG-p-TDFA onto the silicon substrate, together with the chemical compositions of p-TDFA-PEG-p-TDFA. The wetabilities of the oligomer films were measured by water contact angles (CAs). Water CAs of p-TDFA-PEG-p-TDFA film were measured and their morphologies were tested by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The result showed that the CAs of the oligomer films, which possess fluoroalkyl groups assembled on the outer surface, increase after heating due to the migration of fluoroalkyl groups and the resulted microphase separation of the p-TDFA-PEG-p-TDFA.

Abstract
Methacrylamide-based oligomers bearing phosphonate pending groups at the end of a long alkyl chain and originating from undecylenic acid synthons were subjected to direct oligomer dissolution. Size improvement towards much smaller objects was reached using the nanoprecipitation method: the oligomers were first dissolved in an organic solvent, and then precipitated in water using a syringe pump. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) showed phosphorous containing monomodal and quite narrow-sized self-assemblies in water with hydrodynamic diameters (DH) ranging from 80 to 280 nm (depending on the oligomer system). Direct visualization using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed filled and almost individual particles with spherical shape. They were considerably shrunk, suggesting the highly swollen character of the self-assemblies in suspension. Morphological information on the multi-scale self-assembled structures was complementarily obtained using static light scattering (SLS). Thus, at a low length-scale, highly segregated sub-units having sharp boundaries surrounded by water (Porod behaviour) were observed, whereas at a high length-scale random non-compact organization of these sub-units via weak interactions was found, forming a chaplet-like structure (Gaussian behaviour). Furthermore, the pH-sensitiveness of the suspensions obtained after the nanoprecipitation method was studied. Particularly, at pH = 12, the characteristic size drastically increased within few hours from typically ∼280 nm to 2 μm due to electrostatic repulsion between deprotonated hydroxyl groups. At longer times, the observed peculiar behaviour corresponded to the model of diffusion-limited cluster aggregation (DLCA) where the particles stuck easily together upon contact [continuation of the article by C. Abstract
Cylindrical block copolymer micelles with a crystalline poly(ferrocenyldimethylsilane) (PFDMS) core and a long corona-forming block are known to elongate through an epitaxial growth mechanism on addition of further PFDMS block copolymer unimers. We now report that addition of the semicrystalline homopolymer PFDMS(28) to monodisperse short (ca. 200 nm), cylindrical seed micelles of PFDMS block copolymers results in the formation of aggregated structures by end-to-end coupling to form micelle networks. The resulting aggregates were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In some cases, a core-thickening effect was also observed where the added homopolymer appeared to deposit and crystallize at the core-corona interface, which resulted in an increase of the width of the micelles within the networks. No evidence for aggregation was detected when the amorphous homopolymer poly(ferrocenylethylmethylsilane) (PFEMS(25)) was added to the cylindrical seed micelles whereas similar behavior to PFDMS(28) was noted for semicrystalline polyferrocenyldimethylgermane (PFDMG(30)). This suggested that the crystallinity of the added homopolymer is critical for subsequent end-to-end coupling and network formation to occur. We also explored the tendency of the cylindrical seed micelles to form aggregates by the addition of PI-b-PFDMS (PI = polyisoprene) block copolymers (block ratios 6:1, 3.8:1, 2:1, or 1:1), and striking differences were noted. The results ranged from typical micelle elongation, as reported in previous work, at high corona to core-forming block ratios (PI-b-PFDMS; 6:1) to predominantly end-to-end coupling at lower ratios (PI-b-PFDMS; 2:1, 1:1) to form long, essentially linear structures. The latter process, especially for the 2:1 block copolymer, led to much more controlled aggregate formation compared with that observed on addition of homopolymers.
