Surface Functionalization of Face Masks with Cold Plasma and Its Effect in Anchoring Polyphenols Extracted from Agri-Food. Molecules 2022; 27:molecules27238632. Abstract
To improve the capability of non-woven polypropylene-based fabric (NWF-PP) used for face mask production to retain active biomolecules such as polyphenols, the surface functionalization of NWF-PP-directly cut from face masks-was carried out by employing cold plasma with oxygen. The nature/structure of the functional groups, as well as the degree of functionalization, were evaluated by ATR-FTIR and XPS by varying the experimental conditions (generator power, treatment time, and oxygen flow). The effects of plasma activation on mechanical and morphological characteristics were evaluated by stress-strain measurements and SEM analysis. The ability of functionalized NWF-PP to firmly anchor polyphenols extracted from cloves was estimated by ATR-FTIR analysis, IR imaging, extractions in physiological solution, and OIT analysis (before and after extraction), as well as by SEM analysis. All the results obtained converge in showing that, although the plasma treatment causes changes-not only on the surface-with certain detriment to the mechanical performance of the NWF-PP, the incorporated functionalities are able to retain/anchor the active molecules extracted from the cloves, thus stabilizing the treated surfaces against thermo-oxidation even after prolonged extraction.

Abstract
Polyolefins represent a high-volume class of polymers prized for their attractive thermomechanical properties, but the lack of chemical functionality on polyolefins makes them inadequate for many high-performance engineering applications. We report a metal-free postpolymerization modification approach to impart functionality onto branched polyolefins without the deleterious chain-coupling or chain-scission side reactions inherent to previous methods. The identification of conditions for thermally initiated polyolefin C-H functionalization combined with the development of new reagents enabled the addition of xanthates, trithiocarbonates, and dithiocarbamates to a variety of commercially available branched polyolefins. Systematic experimental and kinetic studies led to a mechanistic hypothesis that facilitated the rational design of reagents and reaction conditions for the thermally initiated C-H xanthylation of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) within a twin-screw extruder. A structure-property study showed that the functionalized iPP adheres to polar surfaces twice as strongly as commercial iPP while demonstrating similar tensile properties. The fundamental understanding of the elementary steps in amidyl radical-mediated polyolefin functionalization provided herein reveals key structure-reactivity relationships for the design of improved reagents, while the demonstration of chemoselective and scalable iPP functionalization to realize a material with improved adhesion properties indicates the translational potential of this method.

Grafting of Hindered Phenol Groups onto Ethylene/α-Olefin Copolymer by Nitroxide Radical Coupling. Polymers (Basel) 2017; 9:polym9120670. Abstract
The covalent immobilization of hindered phenol groups, with potential antioxidant activity, onto an ethylene/α-olefin (EOC) copolymer was carried out by the nitroxide radical coupling (NRC) reaction performed in the melt with a peroxide and the 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzoyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (BHB-T). Functionalized EOC (EOC-g-(BHB-T)) was exposed to photo- and thermo-oxidation. By comparison with some model compounds bearing the (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO) moiety or the hindered phenol unit, it was observed that the grafted BHB-T could effectively help the stabilization of the polymer matrix both under photo- and thermo-oxidation. In addition, the immobilization of BHB-T can effectively increase the service life of the functionalized polymers when polymer films were put in contact with ethanol solution thus simulating a possible application of the modified polymer.

Abstract
The properties of a low molecular weight organic dye, namely 4-naphthyloxy-1-methoxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine, covalently bound to an apolar polyolefin were investigated by means of a multi-level approach, combining classical molecular dynamics simulations, based on purposely parameterized force fields, and quantum mechanical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent extension (TD-DFT). The structure and dynamics of the dye in its embedding medium were analyzed and discussed taking the entangling effect of the surrounding polymer into account, and also by comparing the results to those obtained for a different environment, i.e. toluene solution. Finally, the influence was investigated of long lived cages found in the polymeric embedding on photophysical properties, in terms of the slow and fast dye's internal dynamics, by comparing computed IR and UV spectra with their experimental counterparts.

Abstract
The spectroscopic properties of the organic chromophore 4-naphthoyloxy-1-methoxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (NfO-TEMPO-Me) in toluene solution are explored through an integrated computational strategy combining a classical dynamic sampling with a quantum mechanical description within the framework of the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) approach. The atomistic simulations are based on an accurately parametrized force field, specifically designed to represent the conformational behavior of the molecule in its ground and bright excited states, whereas TDDFT calculations are performed through a selected combination of hybrid functionals and basis sets to obtain optical spectra closely matching the experimental findings. Solvent effects, crucial to obtain good accuracy, are taken into account through explicit molecules and polarizable continuum descriptions. Although, in the case of toluene, specific solvation is not fundamental, the detailed conformational sampling in solution has confirmed the importance of a dynamic description of the molecular geometry for a reliable description of the photophysical properties of the dye. The agreement between theoretical and experimental data is established and a robust protocol for the prediction of the optical behaviour of flexible fluorophores in solution is set.

Abstract
The conformational and photophysical properties in toluene solution of a naphthoic acid derivative, namely 4-naphthoyloxy-1-methoxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine, which can simulate a pendant active group grafted on apolar polymer structures, were studied by means of calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent extension (TD-DFT) coupled to a polarizable continuum model (PCM) of the surrounding medium. The conformational landscape was exhaustively explored and the conformers responsible for the absorption and emission spectra were identified through well established computational procedures based on a tuned combination of functional (PBE0) and basis set (N07D) which reproduced satisfactorily the experimental absorption and emission wavelengths.
