Systematic study on chemical oxidative and solid-state polymerization of poly(3,4-ethylenedithiathiophene)

Strategies for the Design of PEDOT Analogues Unraveled: the Use of Chalcogen Bonds and σ-Holes

In this theoretical study, we set out to demonstrate the substitution effect of PEDOT analogues on planarity as an intrinsic indicator for electronic performance. We perform a quantum mechanical (DFT) study of PEDOT and analogous model systems and demonstrate the usefulness of the ωB97X-V functional to simulate chalcogen bonds and other noncovalent interactions. We confirm that the chalcogen bond stabilizes the planar conformation and further visualize its presence via the electrostatic potential surface. In comparison to the prevalent B3LYP, we gain 4-fold savings in computational time and simulate model systems of up to a dodecamer. Implications for design of conductive polymers can be drawn from the results, and an example for self-doped polymers is presented where modulation of the strength of the chalcogen bond plays a significant role.

Overcoming intra-molecular repulsions in PEDTT by sulphate counter-ion

We set out to demonstrate the development of a highly conductive polymer based on poly-(3,4-ethylenedithia thiophene) (PEDTT), PEDOTs structural analogue historically notorious for structural disorder and limited conductivities. The caveat therein was previously described to lie in intra-molecular repulsions. We demonstrate how a tremendous >2600-fold improvement in conductivity and metallic features, such as magnetoconductivity can be achieved. This is achieved through a careful choice of the counter-ion (sulphate) and the use of oxidative chemical vapour deposition (oCVD). It is shown that high structural order on the molecular level was established and the formation of crystallites tens of nanometres in size was achieved. We infer that the sulphate ions therein intercalate between the polymer chains, thus forming densely packed crystals of planar molecules with extended π-systems. Consequently, room-temperature conductivities of above 1000 S cm-1 are achieved, challenging those of conventional PEDOT:PSS. The material is in the critical regime of the metal-insulator transition.

An Aqueous Conducting Redox-Polymer-Based Proton Battery that Can Withstand Rapid Constant-Voltage Charging and Sub-Zero Temperatures

Electrodes based on organic matter operating in aqueous electrolytes enable new approaches and technologies for assembling and utilizing batteries that are difficult to achieve with traditional electrode materials. Here, we report how thiophene-based trimeric structures with naphthoquinone or hydroquinone redox-active pendent groups can be processed in solution, deposited, dried and subsequently polymerized in solid state to form conductive (redox) polymer layers without any additives. Such post-deposition polymerization offers efficient use of material, high mass loading (up to 10 mg cm-2 ) and good flexibility in the choice of substrate and coating method. By employing these materials as anode and cathode in an acidic aqueous electrolyte a rocking-chair proton battery is built. The battery shows good cycling stability (85 % after 500 cycles), withstands rapid charging, with full capacity (60 mAh g-1 ) reached within 100 seconds, allows for direct integration with photovoltaics, and retains its favorable characteristics even at -24 °C.

PEDOT-Based Conducting Polymer Actuators

Conducting polymers, particularly poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and its complex with poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), provide a promising materials platform to develop soft actuators or artificial muscles. To date, PEDOT-based actuators are available in the field of bionics, biomedicine, smart textiles, microactuators, and other functional applications. Compared to other conducting polymers, PEDOT provides higher conductivity and chemical stability, lower density and operating voltages, and the dispersion of PEDOT with PSS further enriches performances in solubility, hydrophility, processability, and flexibility, making them advantageous in actuator-based applications. However, the actuators fabricated by PEDOT-based materials are still in their infancy, with many unknowns and challenges that require more comprehensive understanding for their current and future development. This review is aimed at providing a comprehensive understanding of the actuation mechanisms, performance evaluation criteria, processing technologies and configurations, and the most recent progress of materials development and applications. Lastly, we also elaborate on future opportunities for improving and exploiting PEDOT-based actuators.

Chemical Oxidative Polymerization of 2-Aminothiazole in Aqueous Solution: Synthesis, Characterization and Kinetics Study

The chemical oxidative polymerization of 2-aminothiazole (AT) was studied in aqueous solution using copper chloride (CuCl₂) as an oxidant. The effect of varying the reaction temperature, reaction time and oxidant/monomer molar ratio on the polymer yield was investigated. The resulting poly(2-aminothiazole)s (PATs) were characterized by FTIR, ¹H NMR, UV-vis, gel permeation chromatography, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and four-point probe electrical conductivity measurements. Compared with a previous study, PATs with higher yield (81%) and better thermal stability could be synthesized. The chemical oxidative polymerization kinetics of AT were studied for the first time. The orders of the polymerization reaction with respect to monomer concentration and oxidant concentration were found to be 1.14 and 0.97, respectively, and the apparent activation energy of the polymerization reaction was determined to be 21.57 kJ/mol.

Electrochemical sensing application of poly(acrylic acid modified EDOT-co-EDOT):PSS and its inorganic nanocomposite with high soaking stability, adhesion ability and flexibility

A novel and simple strategy to prevent swelling, disintegration, cracking and peeling-off of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) film in water was developed.

Poly(thieno[3,4-b]-1,4-oxathiane): medium effect on electropolymerization and electrochromic performance

The asymmetrical sulfur analog of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT), thieno[3,4-b]-1,4-oxathiane (EOTT), was synthesized, and its electropolymerization was comparatively investigated by employing different solvent-electrolyte systems (room temperature ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BmimPF6), CH2Cl2-Bu4NPF6, and CH2Cl2-BmimPF6). Further, the effect of solvents and supporting electrolytes on the structure, morphology, electrochemical, electronic, and optical properties and electrochromic performance of the obtained poly(thieno[3,4-b]-1,4-oxathiane) (PEOTT) films were minutely studied. PEOTT film with a band gap (Eg) of about 1.6 eV could be facilely electrodeposited in all the solvent-electrolytes and displayed excellent electroactivity, outstanding redox stability in a wide potential window, and improved thermal stability. Cyclic voltammetry showed that EOTT could be electropolymerized at a lower oxidation potential in BmimPF6 (∼1.0 V vs Ag/AgCl) due to several advantanges of RTIL BmimPF6 itself, such as high intrinsic conductivity and mild chemical conditions, etc., and the resulting PEOTT film exhibited compact morphology with better electroactivity and stability and higher electrical conductivity. On the other hand, PEOTT films from all the sovent-electrolytes also showed the electrochromic nature by color changing from gray blue to green, and further kinetic studies revealed that PEOTT had decent contrast ratios (36%), higher coloration efficiencies (212 cm(2)/C in BmimPF6), low switching voltages, moderate response time (1.2 s), excellent stability, and color persistence. From these results, PEOTT provides more plentiful electrochromic colors and holds promise for display applications.

Organic thermoelectric materials: emerging green energy materials converting heat to electricity directly and efficiently

The abundance of solar thermal energy and the widespread demands for waste heat recovery make thermoelectric generators (TEGs) very attractive in harvesting low-cost energy resources. Meanwhile, thermoelectric refrigeration is promising for local cooling and niche applications. In this context there is currently a growing interest in developing organic thermoelectric materials which are flexible, cost-effective, eco-friendly and potentially energy-efficient. In particular, the past several years have witnessed remarkable progress in organic thermoelectric materials and devices. In this review, thermoelectric properties of conducting polymers and small molecules are summarized, with recent progresses in materials, measurements and devices highlighted. Prospects and suggestions for future research efforts are also presented. The organic thermoelectric materials are emerging candidates for green energy conversion.
