Late Transition Metal Catalysts with Chelating Amines for Olefin Polymerization

Polyolefins are the most consumed polymeric materials extensively used in our daily life and are usually generated by coordination polymerization in the polyolefin industry. Olefin polymerization catalysts containing transition metal–organic compound combinations are undoubtedly crucial for the development of the polyolefin industry. The nitrogen donor atom has attracted considerable interest and is widely used in combination with the transition metal for the fine-tuning of the chemical environment around the metal center. In addition to widely reported olefin polymerization catalysts with imine and amide donors (sp2 hybrid N), late transition metal catalysts with chelating amine donors (sp3 hybrid N) for olefin polymerization have never been reviewed. In this review paper, we focus on late transition metal (Ni, Pd, Fe, and Co) catalysts with chelating amines for olefin polymerization. A variety of late transition metal catalysts bearing different neutral amine donors are surveyed for olefin polymerization, including amine–imine, amine–pyridine, α-diamine, and [N, N, N] tridentate ligands with amine donors. The relationship between catalyst structure and catalytic performance is also encompassed. This review aims to promote the design of late transition metal catalysts with unique chelating amine donors for the development of high-performance polyolefin materials.

Selective branch formation in ethylene polymerization to access precise ethylene-propylene copolymers

Polyolefins with branches produced by ethylene alone via chain walking are highly desired in industry. Selective branch formation from uncontrolled chain walking is a long-standing challenge to generate exclusively branched polyolefins, however. Here we report such desirable microstructures in ethylene polymerization by using sterically constrained α-diimine nickel(II)/palladium(II) catalysts at 30 °C–90 °C that fall into industrial conditions. Branched polyethylenes with exclusive branch pattern of methyl branches (99%) and notably selective branch distribution of 1,4-Me₂ unit (86%) can be generated. The ultrahigh degree of branching (>200 Me/1000 C) enables the well-defined product to mimic ethylene-propylene copolymers. More interestingly, branch distribution is predictable and computable by using a simple statistical model of p(1-p)ⁿ (p: the probability of branch formation). Mechanistic insights into the branch formation including branch pattern and branch distribution by an in-depth density functional theory (DFT) calculation are elucidated.

Olefin Polymerization Catalyzed by Double-Decker Dipalladium Complexes: Low Branched Poly(α-Olefin)s by Selective Insertion of the Monomer Molecule

Dipalladium complexes of a cyclic bis(diimine) ligand with a double-decker structure catalyze polymerization of ethylene and α-olefins and copolymerization of ethylene with 1-hexene. The polymerization of 1-hexene yields a polymer that is mainly composed of the hexamethylene unit formed by 2,1-insertion of the monomer into the palladium-carbon bond, followed by chain-walking (6,1-insertion). The polymerization of 4-methyl-1-pentene proceeds by 2,1-insertion with a selectivity of 92-97 %, and affords the polymer with methyl and 2-methylhexyl branches. 2,1-Insertion occurs selectively in all of the polymerization reactions of α-olefins catalyzed by the dipalladium complexes. Ethylene polymerization with the catalyst at 100 °C lasts over 24 h, whereas the monopalladium-diimine catalyst loses its activity within 8 h at 60 °C. Polyethylene obtained by the dipalladium catalyst is less-branched and has a higher molecular weight compared to that of the monopalladium catalyst under the same conditions. Copolymerization of ethylene with 1-hexene affords solid products with melting points and molecular weights that vary depending on the polymerization time, suggesting formation of a block and/or gradient copolymer.
