Abstract
Thermo-sensitive polymer-modified liposomes are able to achieve site-specific delivery of drugs. In this work, thermo-sensitive polymers were synthesized by atomic transfer radical polymerization of N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAAm) and N,N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMAAm) using bromoisobutyryl distearoyl phosphoethanolamine (DSPE-Br) as initiator. The resulting PNIPAAm-DSPE and P(NIPAAm-DMAAm)-DSPE polymers were characterized using proton nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. PNIPAAm-DSPE and P(NIPAAm-DMAAm)-DSPE exhibit a lower critical solution temperature of 34.0 and 46.9°C in water, and 29.8 and 38.8°C in phosphate buffered saline, respectively. Paclitaxel-loaded thermo-sensitive liposomes were prepared using film hydration method, followed by post-insertion of P(NIPAAm-DMAAm)-DSPE into the liposome bilayer. Drug release of traditional and thermosensitive liposomes was comparatively studied at 37 and 40°C. The total release and release rate of thermosensitive liposomes at 40°C were much higher than those at 37°C. And drug release is higher for thermosensitive liposomes than for traditional liposomes because insertion of thermo-sensitive polymer chains affects the system's stability. MTT assay showed that thermo-sensitive liposomes present no cytotoxicity to L929 cells at the tested concentrations, and paclitaxel-loaded liposomes have significant cytotoxicity against A549 cancer cells. Therefore, it is concluded that P(NIPAAm-DMAAm)-DSPE modified thermo-sensitive liposomes could be promising as nano-carrier of antitumor drugs.

Abstract
Studies on the end group stability of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) during the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) process are presented. Polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide was conducted in different solvents using a copper(I) chloride/Me6Tren catalyst complex. The influence of the ATRP solvent as well as the polymer purification process on the end group stability was investigated. For the first time, mass spectrometry results clearly underline the loss of ω end groups via an intramolecular cyclization reaction. Furthermore, an ATRP system based on a copper(I) bromide/Me6Tren catalyst complex was introduced, that showed not only good control over the polymerization process, but also provided the opportunity of block copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide with acrylates and other N-substituted acrylamides. The polymers were characterized using 1H-NMR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography. Polymer end groups were determined via ESI-TOF mass spectrometry enhanced by ion mobility separation (IMS).

Abstract
Well-defined novel, linear, biodegradable, amphiphilic thermo-responsive ABA-type triblock copolymers, poly[2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethyl methacrylate-co-oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate]-b-poly(ε-caprolactone)-b-poly[2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethyl methacrylate-co-oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate] [P(MEO₂MA-co-OEGMA)-b-PCL-b-P(MEO₂MA-co-OEGMA)] (tBPs), were synthesized via a combination of ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone (εCL) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT) of MEO₂MA and OEGMA comonomers. The chemical structures and compositions of these copolymers were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR). The molecular weights of the copolymers were obtained using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) measurements. Thermo-responsive micelles were obtained by self-assembly of copolymers in aqueous medium. The temperature sensitivity and micelllization behavior of amphiphilic triblock copolymers solutions were studied by transmittance, fluorescence probe, surface tension, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A hydrophobic drug, anethole, was encapsulated in micelles by using the dialysis method. The average particle sizes of drug-loaded micelles were determined by dynamic light scattering measurement. In vitro, the sustained release of the anethole was performed in pH 7.4 phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) at different temperatures. Results showed that the triblock copolymer's micelles were quite effective in the encapsulation and controlled release of anethole. The vial inversion test demonstrated that the triblock copolymers could trigger the sol-gel transition which also depended on the temperature, and its sol-gel transition temperature gradually decreased with increasing concentration. The hydrogel system could also be used as a carrier of hydrophobic drugs in medicine.

Abstract
We prepared thermosensitive and biocompatible drug-loaded nanofibrous films by an electrospinning technique using a block copolymer, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-b-poly(l-lactide) (PNLA), and poly(l-lactide) (PLLA). The copolymer PNLA was synthesized by the radical polymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm), followed by the ring-opening polymerization of l-lactide. The properties of PNIPAAm and PNLA were selectively discussed based on the results of NMR, FT-IR, GPC, and CA analyses. Because of the low molecular weight of PNIPAAm and PNLA and the hydrolysis of PNLA resulting from its hydrophilicity, these copolymers were inappropriate for electrospinning separately. Hence, a mixture of PNLA and PLLA was used to prepare electrospun nanofibrous films. SEM images of the PNLA/PLLA electrospun films showed that homogeneous fibres with smooth surfaces were obtained. In vitro release studies indicated that the drug-release rate of the PNLA/PLLA electrospun nanofibrous films can be adjusted by the content and molecular weight of PNLA and by the environmental temperature. The results demonstrate that electrospinning is a promising way to create stimuli-responsive fibrous films with potential applications in the design of controllable drug delivery systems. Thermosensitive and biocompatible PNLA/PLLA drug-loaded nanofibrous films with different morphologies and controlled drug release behaviors by electrospinning technique.![]()

Abstract
Thermo-responsive brush-like amphiphilic poly[2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethyl methacrylate-co-oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate]-b-poly(l-lactide)-b-poly[2-(2-methoxyethoxy) ethyl methacrylate-co-oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate] [P(MEO2MA-co-OEGMA)-b-PLLA-b-P(MEO2MA-co-OEGMA)] triblock copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization of MEO2MA and OEGMA co-monomers using a α,ω-Bromopropionyl poly(l-lactide) (Br-PLLA-Br) macroinitiator. The resulting copolymers with MEO2MA/OEGMA molar ratio ranging from 79/21 to 42/58 were characterized by (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance and size exclusion chromatography. Thermo-responsive micelles were obtained by self-assembly of copolymers in aqueous medium. The micelles are spherical in shape with sizes varying from 20.7 to 102.5 nm. A hydrophobic anticancer drug, curcumin, was encapsulated in micelles by using membrane hydration method. The properties of drug loaded micelles were determined by dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy and lower critical solution temperature (LCST) measurements. The micelles size decreases from 102.5 nm for blank micelles to 37.6 nm with 10.8% drug loading, suggesting that the drug plays an important role in the micellization procedure. The LCST decreases from 45.1°C for blank micelles to 40.6 and 38.3°C with 5.9 and 10.8% drug loading, respectively. In vitro drug release was performed in pH 7.4 PBS at different temperatures. Data show that the release rate was significantly enhanced above the LCST comparing with that below the LCST. The amount of released drug at 41°C was ca. 20% higher than that at 37°C. Burst-like release was depressed due to enhanced interaction between drug with hydrophobic PLA and PMA chains.

Abstract
The effect of temperature on the micellar morphology of two polystyrene-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PS-b-PNIPAM) diblock copolymers in an aqueous solution was investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). At 25 °C, a mixture of vesicles and spheres are observed for the micelles of PS65-b-PNIPAM108, while PS65-b-PNIPAM360 exhibits mixed cylindrical and spherical micellar morphology. Upon increasing the temperature, the micellar morphology becomes spherical for PS65-b-PNIPAM108 at 60 °C and for PS65-b-PNIPAM360 at 40 °C. Such vesicle-to-sphere and cylinder-to-sphere transitions of micellar morphology are reversible when the micellar solutions are cooled back to 25 °C. However, these temperature-induced morphological transitions of the PS-b-PNIPAM micelles are contrary to the theoretical prediction. Qualitative analysis of the free energy shows that vesicular or cylindrical micelles tend to form at higher temperatures if only the overall volume change of the PNIPAM block is considered. The contradiction between the experimental results and theoretical prediction is interpreted in terms of the local deformability of the PNIPAM chains. At elevated temperatures, the collapsed PNIPAM globules are less deformable and must occupy larger areas at the micellar interface, although the overall volume is smaller at higher temperatures. This will lead to a larger repulsion between the PNIPAM globules and a remarkable increase in the free energy of the corona; thus, the formation of vesicles or cylinders at higher temperatures is prohibited.
