Synthesis and Characterization of Functional Cellulose-Ether-Based PCL- and PLA-Grafts-Copolymers

The use of biodegradable materials such as cellulose and polyesters can be extended through the combination, as well as modification, of these biopolymers. By controlling the molecular structure and composition of copolymers of these components, it should also be possible to tailor their material properties. We hereby report on the synthesis and characterization of cellulose-based graft copolymers with a precise molecular composition and copolymer architecture. To prepare such materials, we initially modified cellulose through the regioselective protection of the 6-OH group using trityl chloride. The 6-O protected compound was then alkylated, and deprotection at the 6-OH group provided the desired 2,3-di-O-alkyl cellulose compounds that were used as macroinitiators for ring opening polymerization. Regioselective modification was hereby necessary to obtain compounds with an exact molecular composition. Ring opening polymerization, catalyzed by Sn(Oct)₂, at the primary 6-OH group of the cellulose macroinitiator, using L-lactide or ε-caprolactone, resulted in graft copolymers with the desired functionalization pattern. The materials were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, ¹H- and ¹³C- nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, size exclusion chromatography as well as X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry. PCL-based copolymers exhibited distinct melting point as well as a crystalline phase of up to 47%, while copolymers with PLA segments were highly amorphous, showing a broad amorphous reflex in the XRD spectra, and no melting or crystallization points were discernible using differential scanning calorimetry.

Removal of naproxen and diclofenac using magnetic nanoparticles/nanocomposites

Magnetic iron oxide and iron/copper nanoparticles were synthesized using Lathyrus brachypterus extract, and then magnetic Fe₃O₄–CS, Fe₃O₄–AT, Fe/Cu–CS and Fe/Cu–AT nanocomposite beads were synthesized using chitosan and alginate natural polymers. They were used for both adsorption and heterogeneous catalysts for the catalytic wet peroxidation (CWPO) of naproxen (NPX), diclofenac (DCF) and NPX + DCF drugs which are important micro-organic pollutants, separately and together (NPX + DCF) from aqueous media. In adsorption studies, the drugs were adsorbed very quickly in the first minutes and then, desorbed in between 8 and 10 min. In competitive adsorption, the adsorbents showed selective properties for DCF and NPX. In CWPO technique, drug removal was achieved in 9 min with a conversion capacity of 92% for DCF with Fe/Cu–CS and 84% for NPX with Fe/Cu–AT optimum experimental conditions, such as pH 5, 30% of H₂O₂, 100 mg catalyst and 298 K. Based on reusability of the catalysts, it was seen that there was a slight decrease in the removal efficiencies in the third cycle and the stable and active structure of the catalyst was preserved to the desired extent. Furthermore, the oxidation reaction was in good agreement with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model.

Regiospecific Grafting of Chitosan Oligomers Brushes onto Silicon Wafers

The functionalization of surfaces using chitosan oligomers is of great interest for a wide range of applications in biomaterial and biomedical fields, as chitosan oligomers can provide various functional properties including biocompatibility, wetting, adhesion, and antibacterial activity. In this study, an innovative process for the regiospecific chemical grafting of reducing-end-modified chitosan oligomers brushes onto silicon wafers is described. Chitosan oligomers (COS) with well-defined structural parameters (average DP ~19 and DA ~0%) and bearing a 2,5-anhydro-d-mannofuranose (amf) unit at the reducing end were obtained via nitrous acid depolymerization of chitosan. After a silanization step where silicon wafers were modified with aromatic amine derivatives, grafting conditions were studied to optimize the reductive amination between aldehydes of amf-terminated COS and aromatic amines of silicon wafers. Functionalized surfaces were fully characterized by AFM, ATR-FTIR, ellipsometry, contact angle measurement, and ToF-SIMS techniques. Smooth surfaces were obtained with a COS layer about 3 nm thick and contact angle values between 72° and 76°. Furthermore, it was shown that the addition of the reducing agent NaBH₃CN could positively improve the COS grafting density and/or led to a better stability of the covalent grafting to hydrolysis. Finally, this study also showed that this grafting process is also efficient for chitosan oligomers of higher DA (i.e., ~21%).

Chitosan Functionalization: Covalent and Non-Covalent Interactions and Their Characterization

Chitosan (CS) is a natural biopolymer that has gained great interest in many research fields due to its promising biocompatibility, biodegradability, and favorable mechanical properties. The versatility of this low-cost polymer allows for a variety of chemical modifications via covalent conjugation and non-covalent interactions, which are designed to further improve the properties of interest. This review aims at presenting the broad range of functionalization strategies reported over the last five years to reflect the state-of-the art of CS derivatization. We start by describing covalent modifications performed on the CS backbone, followed by non-covalent CS modifications involving small molecules, proteins, and metal adjuvants. An overview of CS-based systems involving both covalent and electrostatic modification patterns is then presented. Finally, a special focus will be given on the characterization techniques commonly used to qualify the composition and physical properties of CS derivatives.

Chemically Modified Biopolymers for the Formation of Biomedical Hydrogels

Biopolymers are natural polymers sourced from plants and animals, which include a variety of polysaccharides and polypeptides. The inclusion of biopolymers into biomedical hydrogels is of great interest because of their inherent biochemical and biophysical properties, such as cellular adhesion, degradation, and viscoelasticity. The objective of this Review is to provide a detailed overview of the design and development of biopolymer hydrogels for biomedical applications, with an emphasis on biopolymer chemical modifications and cross-linking methods. First, the fundamentals of biopolymers and chemical conjugation methods to introduce cross-linking groups are described. Cross-linking methods to form biopolymer networks are then discussed in detail, including (i) covalent cross-linking (e.g., free radical chain polymerization, click cross-linking, cross-linking due to oxidation of phenolic groups), (ii) dynamic covalent cross-linking (e.g., Schiff base formation, disulfide formation, reversible Diels-Alder reactions), and (iii) physical cross-linking (e.g., guest-host interactions, hydrogen bonding, metal-ligand coordination, grafted biopolymers). Finally, recent advances in the use of chemically modified biopolymer hydrogels for the biofabrication of tissue scaffolds, therapeutic delivery, tissue adhesives and sealants, as well as the formation of interpenetrating network biopolymer hydrogels, are highlighted.

Advances in chitooligosaccharides chemical modifications

Chitooligosaccharides (COS) differ from chitosan by their molar mass: those of COS are defined to be lower than 20 kg mol^-1 . Their functionalization is widely described in the literature and leads to the introduction of new properties that broaden their application fields. Like chitosan, COS modification sites are mainly primary amine and hydroxyl groups. Among their chemical modification, one can find amidation or esterification, epoxy-amine/hydroxyl coupling, Schiff base formation, and Michael addition. When depolymerized through nitrous deamination, COS bear an aldehyde at the chain end that can open the way to other chemical reactions and lead to the synthesis of new interesting amphiphilic structures. This article details the recent developments in COS functionalization, primarily focusing on amine and hydroxyl groups and aldehyde-chain end reactions, as well as paying considerable attention to other types of modification. We also describe and compare the different functionalization protocols found in the literature while highlighting potential mistakes made in the chemical structures accompanied with suggestions. Such chemical modification can lead to new materials that are generally nontoxic, biobased, biodegradable, and usable in various applications.

Functionalization of Chitosan Oligomers: From Aliphatic Epoxide to Cardanol-Grafted Oligomers for Oil-in-Water Emulsions

Hydrophobically modified chitooligosaccharides (COSs) were tested for suitability as an emulsifier in cationic bituminous emulsions. COSs with polymerization degrees (DPs) of 5, 10, 15, and 20 were obtained by nitrous acid deamination. A complete study on depolymerization and precise product and side product characterization was undergone. Chemical modification of COSs was performed to achieve amphiphilic structures using three fatty epoxides with a growing chain length butyl (C4), octadecyl (C9), and hexadecyl glycidyl ether (C16)). The grafting efficiency according to reaction conditions was established. Different substitution degrees (DSs) were obtained by modulating the ratio of fatty epoxy to NH₂. It was shown that after a certain DS, the oligomers thus formed were not water-soluble anymore. At the end, cardanol glycidyl ether was grafted on DP 5, 10, and 15 COSs, cardanol being a biobased compound extracted from cashew nut shell; this reaction led to a potentially fully biobased structure. Water-soluble candidates with a higher DS were used as surfactants to emulsify motor oil as a simulation of bitumen. Cardanol-chitosan-based surfactants led to direct oil-in-water emulsion (60/40 w/w) composed of particles of 15 μm average size that were stable at least for 24 h.

Microwave assisted methacrylation of Kappa carrageenan: A bioink for cartilage tissue engineering

In this study, we aimed to obtain stable Kappa carrageenan (κCar) hydrogel that could be used as a bioink for cartilage regeneration. For this purpose, we described an effective and considerably faster methacrylation process by using microwave energy. Thus, microwave-methacrylated κCar (Mw-κCar-MA) with ≥85% degree of methacrylation (DM) was synthesized despite the use of a low concentration of methacrylic anhydride (MA) at 1000 W in 5 min. Then, Mw-κCar-MA was photo-crosslinked by only using UV irradiation for 40 s. Characterization studies proved that Mw-κCar-MA hydrogels were stronger and have lower weight loss (~20% at 30 days) than that of conventionally synthesized κCar-MA hydrogels. Viscosities of the Mw-κCar-MA hydrogels were found to be sufficient to use in 3D bioprinters. Furthermore, Mw-κCar-MA hydrogels enhanced the viability, proliferation, and GAG deposition of ATDC5 chondrogenic cells. Therefore, we proposed that Mw-κCar-MA can be considered as a suitable bioink for cartilage tissue engineering.

Cross-Linked Polythiomethacrylate Esters Based on Naphthalene-Synthesis, Properties and Reprocessing

Two structurally different aromatic dithioesters were synthesized from two dithiols and methacryloyl chloride. The polymer networks based on methyl methacrylate and/or styrene and the new dimethacrylates were subsequently prepared. The polymerization yields of copolymers were in the range of 95-99%. The thermal and mechanical properties of the copolymers were determined by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTG), and Shore D hardness. The addition of dithioesters-1,5-NAF-S-Met (or 1,4(1,5)-NAF-CH2S-Met) (from 0.5% to 5%) to MMA- or ST-based polymers results in lowering the glass transition temperature (Tg) by about 8 °C. The thioester-containing polymers based on MMA exhibit lower thermal stability than those with ST. The polythioesters are stable up to 250 °C. The UV/vis spectra and refractive indexes of prepared liquid compositions were also measured. The 1,5-NAF-S-Met (and 1,4(1,5)-NAF-CH2S-Met) improved the refractive index values of ST and MMA compositions. The double bond conversion was also determined for all synthesized materials. The swelling studies of polymers with 20% addition of thioester crosslinkers were investigated. For all polymeric materials with 20% addition of thioesters, depolymerization of the network was carried out by thiol-thioester exchange. The depolymerization products were re-reacted in a thiol-ene reaction with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate by thermal initiation. The thiol-ene procedure enabled reprocessing of starting polymers and obtaining new materials characterized by distinctly different thermal, mechanical, and swelling properties. The thiol-ene materials exhibit a lower Shore hardness in the range of 20-50 °Sh, as well as decreased Tg values when compared to starting copolymers. Due to these possible exchange reactions, one can facilely manipulate the properties of the polymers which could lead to the manufacturing of the new products with the desired features. Degradation of the cross-linked structure and recycling of copolymers were also discussed.

Reducing-End Functionalization of 2,5-Anhydro-d-mannofuranose-Linked Chitooligosaccharides by Dioxyamine: Synthesis and Characterization

The nitrous acid depolymerization of chitosan enables the synthesis of singular chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) since their reducing-end unit is composed of 2,5-anhydro-d-mannofuranose (amf). In the present study, we describe a chemical method for the reducing-end conjugation of COS-amf by the commercially available dioxyamine O,O'-1,3-propanediylbishydroxylamine in high mass yields. The chemical structure of resulting dioxyamine-linked COS-amf synthesized by both oximation and reductive amination ways were fully characterized by ¹H- and ¹³C-NMR spectroscopies and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The coupling of chemically attractive linkers such as dioxyamines at the reducing end of COS-amf forms a relevant strategy for the development of advanced functional COS-based conjugates.

Solvent-free synthesis and characterization of allyl chitosan derivatives

The solvent-free synthesis of allyl-substituted chitosan derivatives through reactive co-extrusion of chitosan powder with allyl bromide at shear deformation was performed. For the structural characterization, FTIR and NMR methods were employed. The results were confirmed by chemical analysis. The total content of allyl substituents from 5 to 50 per 100 chitosan units as a function of the component ratio in the reactive mixtures was revealed. Carrying out the reaction without any additives leads to the selective formation of N-alkylated derivatives, whereas in the presence of alkali the ethers of chitosan were preferentially formed. The results suggest that the proposed approach allows significantly higher yield of products to be obtained at high process speeds and significantly lower reagent consumption as compared with the liquid-phase synthesis in organic medium. The synthesized unsaturated derivatives are promising photosensitive components for use in laser stereolithography for fabrication of three-dimensional biocompatible structures with well-defined architectonics.

The allyl chitosan derivatives are synthesized, characterized and evaluated as photosensitive components for creation of biomedical materials with well-defined architectonics.

A pH-responsive self-healing hydrogel based on multivalent coordination of Ni2+ with polyhistidine-terminated PEG and IDA-modified oligochitosan

A multivalent Ni²⁺ coordination hydrogel based on polyhistidine-terminated PEG and IDA-modified oligochitosan with enhanced neutral stability and mild-acid responsiveness is reported herein.

Synthesis of new high molecular weight phosphorylated chitosans for improving corrosion protection

Two grades of chitosan [chitosan 30000 g mol−1 (N-chitosan 30) and 250000 g mol−1 (N-chitosan 250)] were functionalized by the Kabachnik–Fields reaction. To obtain the highest phosphonic ester grafting rate (55% and 40% for the N-chitosan 30 and N-chitosan 250, respectively), the pH must be kept constant during the reaction (pH=5). Then, a partial hydrolysis of the ester functions was carried out in HCl medium to generate phosphonic acid functions up to 25% and 20% for the N-chitosan 30 and N-chitosan 250, respectively. It was shown that the grafting of phosphonic acids on chitosan significantly reduced the dynamic viscosity. Afterwards, electrochemical impedance measurements were performed in an aqueous solution (pH=5) in the presence of either N-chitosans or P-chitosans (3 wt.%). The two native N-chitosans were little adsorbed onto the carbon steel surface and the corrosion protection was low. In contrast, the impedance results in the presence of the 30000 g mol−1 phosphorylated chitosan (P-chitosan 30) evidenced the beneficial effect of grafted phosphonic acid on its adsorption on the steel surface. The lower efficiency of the 250000 g mol−1 (P-chitosan 250) was attributed to its high molecular weight which made difficult the interactions between the phosphonic groups and the metallic surface.

An environmental application of functionalized chitosan: enhancement of the separation of the solid and liquid fractions of digestate from anaerobic digestion

A high molecular weight chitosan was chemically modified to quantitatively incorporate quaternary ammonium groups. Its efficiency was evaluated in the liquid-solid separation for various liquors, and compared with the one of a polyelectrolyte usually used for this utilization. The performance of the liquid-solid separation was estimated through the determination of two parameters measured after the screening- settling of the mixture liquor/flocculating agent: the separation efficiency (EV) and the TS removal efficiency (ETS). Apart for liquor 6, TS removal was always better after an addition of functionalized chitosan. Furthermore, whatever the type of liquor, the distribution was modified by an increased presence of high-size particles when functionalized chitosan was added. Moreover, chitosan addition tended to homogenize the size of the particles, which could facilitate the choice of the liquid-solid separation process. This homogenization was particularly observed for the liquor initially highly dispersed in size, i.e. liquors 1, 4, 6 and 8.

A Chitosan Derivative Containing Both Carboxylic Acid and Quaternary Ammonium Moieties for the Synthesis of Cyclic Carbonates

Chitosan, a renewable feedstock, is modified and used as a catalytic support in the presence of potassium iodide. The system is highly efficient towards the incorporation of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) into epoxides. It demonstrates very good thermal stability and is recyclable more than five times without loss of activity. The optimal reaction conditions were determined using allylglycidyl ether as a model and extended to a wide range of other epoxides. Cyclic carbonates were obtained with very high yield in a few hours under mild conditions (2-7 bar≈0.2-0.7 MPa, 80 °C) and no solvent.

Bio-based epoxy/chitin nanofiber composites cured with amine-type hardeners containing chitosan

Sorbitol polyglycidyl ether (SPE) which is a bio-based water-soluble epoxy resin was cured with chitosan (CS) and/or a commercial water-soluble polyamidoamine- or polyetheramine-type epoxy hardener (PAA or PEA). Furthermore, biocomposites of the CS-cured SPE (CS-SPE) and CS/PAA- or CS/PEA-cured SPE (SPE-CA or SPE-CE) biocomposites with chitin nanofiber (CNF) were prepared by casting and compression molding methods, respectively. The curing reaction of epoxy and amino groups of the reactants was confirmed by the FT-IR spectral analysis. SPE-CS and SPE-CA were almost transparent films, while SPE-CE was opaque. Transparency of SPE-CS/CNF and SPE-CA/CNF became a little worse with increasing CNF content. The tanδ peak temperature of SPE-CS was higher than those of SPE-PAA and SPE-PEA. SPE-CA or SPE-CE exhibited two tanδ peak temperatures related to glass transitions of the CS-rich and PAA-rich or PEA-rich moieties. The tanδ peak temperatures related to the CS-rich and PAA-rich moieties increased with increasing CNF content. A higher order of tensile strengths and moduli of the cured resins was SPE-CS≫SPE-CA>SPE-CE. The tensile strength and modulus of each sample were much improved by the addition of 3wt% CNF, while further addition of CNF caused a lowering of the strength and modulus.

Phosphorylation of bio-based compounds: the state of the art

The aim of this review is to present both fundamental and applied research on the phosphorylation of renewable resources, through reactions on naturally occurring functions, and their use in biobased polymer chemistry and applications.

New prospects for the synthesis of N-alkyl phosphonate/phosphonic acid-bearing oligo-chitosan

Water-soluble oligo-chitosan were functionalized with N-alkyl phosphonate/phosphonic acid groups via Kabachnik-Fields and epoxy-amine reactions.
