Abstract
The cis/trans geometry of olefins is known to dramatically influence the thermal and mechanical properties of polyalkenamers. Yet, polymerization methods that efficiently control this parameter are scarce. Here we report the development of a stereoretentive acyclic diene metathesis polymerization that uses the reactivity of dithiolate Ru carbenes combined with cis monomers. These Ru catalysts exhibit exquisite retention of the cis geometry and tolerate many polar functional groups, enabling the synthesis of all-cis polyesters, polycarbonates, polyethers and polysulfites. The stereoretentive acyclic diene metathesis polymerization is also characterized by low catalyst loadings and tolerance towards trans impurities in the monomer batch, which should facilitate large-scale implementation. Modulation of the reaction temperature and time leads to an erosion of stereoretention, permitting a stereocontrolled synthesis of polyalkenamers with predictable cis:trans ratios. The impact of the stereochemistry of the repeating alkenes on the thermal properties is clearly demonstrated through differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis.

Abstract
We investigate a class of non-emissive conjugated polymers with very short excited state lifetimes believed to undergo singlet fission and relaxation to mid-gap forbidden excited states. Poly(3-decylthieneylenvinylene) (P3DTV) and its heavy atom analog, poly(3-decylseleneylenvinylene) (P3DSV), are strongly aggregating conjugated polymers that experience large excited state displacements along multiple vibrational modes. We demonstrate this Franck-Condon vibrational activity effectively disperses excitation energy into multiple non-radiative channels that can be explained using a simple, two-state potential energy surface model. Resonance Raman spectroscopy is sensitive to early Franck-Condon vibrational activity and we observe rich harmonic progressions involving multiple high frequency CC backbone symmetric stretching motions (∼1000-1600 cm-1) in both systems reflecting mode-specific excited state geometrical displacements. Transient absorption spectra confirm that efficient non-radiative processes dominate excited state relaxation dynamics which are confined to π-stacked aggregated chains. Surprisingly, we found little influence of the heteroatom consistent with efficient vibrational energy dissipation. Our results highlight the importance of aggregation and multi-dimensional Franck-Condon vibrational dynamics on the ability to harvest excitons, which are not usually considered in materials design and optimization schemes.

Abstract
The concepts of functional precision polymers and the latest accomplishments in their synthesis are summarized. Synthetic concepts based on chain growth polymerization are compared to iterative synthetic approaches. Here, the term "functional precision polymers" refers to polymers that are not solely hydrocarbon-based but contain functional groups and are characterized by a highly ordered primary structure. If insertion polymerization is used for their synthesis, olefin metathesis-based polymerization techniques, that is, ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP), acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization, and the regio- and stereoselective cyclopolymerization of α,ω-diynes are almost exclusively applied. Particularly with regio- and stereospecific ROMP and with cyclopolymerization, the synthesis of tactic polymers and copolymers with high regio-, stereo-, and sequence control can be accomplished; however, it requires carefully tailored transition metal catalysts. The fundamental synthetic concepts and strategies are outlined.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of a molecular tetrapod, SFBTD, featuring a tetraphenylsilane center and four identical conjugated arms, which structurally resembles breakwaters in common wave-reducing shore constructions, are reported. Cyclic voltammetry reveals that SFBTD has a medium band gap of ca. 2.0 eV and a low-lying HOMO energy level at ca. -5.2 eV. Absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry experiments reveal a low degree of crystallinity in this compound and slow crystallization kinetics. Bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaics (OPVs) employing SFBTD and fullerene derivatives exhibit power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) up to 1.05% and open-circuit voltage (VOC) values as high as 1.02 V. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest PCE obtained for OPVs employing molecular tetrapods as donor materials. These devices are relatively thermally stable due to the known ability of breakwater tetrapods to interlock, preventing dislodging and sliding. The lack of favorable phase separations and low hole mobilities of the blend films are the major factors limiting the device performance. Ternary blend devices by the addition of three low band gap poly(thienylene vinylene) (PTV) derivatives were fabricated and tested. We found that the added PTVs acted to be either the major hole conductor or a competing hole conduction channel depending on the HOMO level positions relative to that of SFBTD. Some of the ternary OPV devices out-performed the corresponding binary counterparts employing SFBTD or PTVs alone, suggesting cooperative effects in the ternary systems.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and characterization of poly(3-decylselenylene vinylene) (P3DSV) homopolymers and poly(3-decylselenylene vinylene)-co-poly(3-decylthienylene vinylene) (P3DSV-co-P3DTV) copolymers through acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization techniques. The obtained polymers were fully characterized. P3DSV was found to possess reduced crystallinity and a smaller bandgap of about 1.6 eV, compared with those of poly(3-decylthienylene vinylene) (P3DTV) analogs. P3DSV-co-P3DTV shows electronic properties between those of the corresponding homopolymers and distinctly different from those of simple blends of the two homopolymers. Our methodology provides a new way to control the physical and electronic properties of low bandgap poly(arylene vinylene)s (PAVs).
