Abstract
This work reports on the possibility of using polydopamine (PDA) as a tool to immobilize bromoisobutyryl moieties at the surface of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and initiate Surface Intitiated Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (SI-ATRP) reactions from these sites. Two different strategies based on i) the stepwise modification of the CNCs with dopamine (DA) and α-bromoisobutyryl bromide (BiBB) (Protocol 1) and ii) the one-step treatment of the CNCs with a mixture of DA and BiBB-modified DA (Protocol 2), were compared. Only the CNC particles treated according to Protocol 1 guaranteed efficient anchoring of the SI-ATRP initiating sites in our experimental conditions (with limited impact on the CNCs crystalline structure), the coated layer being leached out by certain solvents in the case of Protocol 2. The brominated particles displaying the best performances were subsequently tested as potential ATRP macroinitiators, using methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) as model monomers. Polymer-grafted particles were successfully obtained, with a grafting density twice as high for Sty as for MMA, demonstrating the validity of this strategy.

Abstract
Emulsion-templated, hydrophilic-oleophobic porous materials are promising for the removal of a small amount of water from oil-water mixtures, but the maneuver and complete collection of these porous materials are challenging. Herein, we report the fabrication of magnetic, hydrophilic-oleophobic polyHIPE composites from reactive Fe3O4 nanoparticle-stabilized high internal phase emulsions through simultaneous bulk polymerization of water-soluble monomers and interface-catalyzed polycondensation of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane. The resulting composites were hydrophilic-oleophobic, with water droplets rapidly absorbed (within 20 s), and exhibited designable magnetic responsiveness. The hydrophilicity-oleophobicity enabled water to be removed through selective absorption from oil-water mixtures (including surfactant-stabilized water-in-oil emulsions), with a high separation rate over 99%. The magnetic-responsiveness enabled both the dry and the swollen composites to be maneuvered in a remote and contactless manner and to be fully collected. Therefore, the magnetic, hydrophilic-oleophobic polyHIPE composites are excellent candidates for the removal of water from water-oil mixtures with complete collection.

Abstract
Recent efforts have demonstrated that the morphology of ceramics can be manipulated to control both their deformation mechanism and mechanical performance. However, precise control of the ceramic nanostructure is still difficult to achieve. Biotemplating, leading to biomorphic materials, provides a facile route to manipulate the nanostructure of the resulting materials, and the use of melanin as a coating provides a new route to biotemplated materials. Melanin is underutilized for structural materials partly due to the cost of procuring it from natural sources and the inability to control the shape and sizes of melanin particles. Taking a combined synthetic biology and chemical synthesis approach, we report the melanization of Escherichia coli and its subsequent silanization and functionalization with preceramic polymers to make novel biomorphic silicon-based ceramic materials. Graft-to and graft-from reactions were used to append preceramic polymers to the melanin, followed by pyrolysis under argon. Samples were analyzed by FTIR, XRD, XPS, and TEM and found to retain the shape and size of the original cells with high fidelity. The homogeneity of coverage and yield of the resulting ceramic materials depended on the type of grafting reaction. This work provides a promising proof-of-concept that bacterial-templated ceramics can be readily made and opens a host of possibilities for further studies and applications.

Abstract
In this work, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) with controlled structures would be grafted on graphene material. The hybrid materials were prepared by coating graphene oxide (GO) with polydopamine (PDA) as a reactive underlayer and reducing agent, subsequently, surface-initiated polymerization of monomers (methyl methacrylate, styrene) based on the activators regenerated electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET-ATRP) technique. The polymer brush-modified graphene materials were then incorporated into the PMMA or PS matrix to get polymer nanocomposites with better thermal properties. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that PMMA and PS chains were successfully anchored on the surfaces of functionalized GO sheets. The influence of the grafted polymer brush-modified GO on thermal stability of PMMA and PS was investigated by a simultaneous thermal analyzer. Thermal conductivity of the polymer nanocomposite was determined by a conductive calorimeter. The results showed that thermal stability, glass transition temperature (
), and thermal conductivity of the polymer nanocomposites were obviously improved compared with pure PMMA or PS.

Abstract
Well-defined polymer brushes attached to nanoparticles offer an elegant opportunity for surface modification because of their excellent mechanical stability, functional versatility, high graft density as well as controllability of surface properties. This study aimed to prepare hybrid materials with good dispersion in different solvents, and to endow this material with certain fluorescence characteristics. Well-defined diblock copolymers poly (styrene)-b-poly (hydroxyethyl methyl acrylate)-co-poly (hydroxyethyl methyl acrylate- rhodamine B) grafted silica nanoparticles (SNPs-g-PS-b-PHEMA-co-PHEMA-RhB) hybrid materials were synthesized via surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ARGET ATRP). The SNPs surfaces were modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (KH-550) firstly, then the initiators 2-Bromoisobutyryl bromide (BIBB) was attached to SNPs surfaces through the esterification of acyl bromide groups and amidogen groups. The synthetic initiators (SNPs-Br) were further used for the SI-ARGET ATRP of styrene (St), hydroxyethyl methyl acrylate (HEMA) and hydroxyethyl methyl acrylate-rhodamine B (HEMA-RhB). The results indicated that the SI-ARGET ATRP initiator had been immobilized onto SNPs surfaces, the Br atom have located at the end of the main polymer chains, and the polymerization process possessed the characteristic of controlled/"living" polymerization. The SNPs-g-PS-b-PHEMA-co-PHEMA-RhB hybrid materials show good fluorescence performance and good dispersion in water and EtOH but aggregated in THF. This study demonstrates that the SI-ARGET ATRP provided a unique way to tune the polymer brushes structure on silica nanoparticles surface and further broaden the application of SI-ARGET ATRP.
