Molecular dynamics in PVDF/PVA blends as revealed by dielectric loss spectroscopy

Dielectric Characterization of Core-Shell Structured Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-grafted-BaTiO3 Nanocomposites

Dielectric properties of poly(vinylidene fluoride)-grafted-BaTiO₃ (PVDF-g-BT) core-shell structured nanocomposites obtained from Reversible Addition Fragmentation chain Transfer (RAFT) polymerization of VDF were investigated by Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS). The dielectric constant increased along with the BT content, about +50% by addition of 15 vol% of BT, which was around 40% more than expected from predictions using the usual dielectric modeling methods for composite materials, to be ascribed to the effect of the interfacial core-shell structure. The known dielectric relaxations for PVDF were observed for the neat polymer as well as for its nanocomposites, not affected by the presence of nanoparticles. A relaxation process at higher temperatures was found, due to interfacial polarization at the amorphous-crystalline interface, due to the high crystallinity of materials produced by RAFT. Isochronal BDS spectra were exploited to detect the primary relaxation of the amorphous fraction. Thermal analysis demonstrated a very broad endotherm at temperatures much lower than the usual melting peaks, possibly due to the ungrafted fraction of the polymer that is more easily removable by repeated washing of the pristine material with acetone.

Phase Transitions in Poly(vinylidene fluoride)/Polymethylene-Based Diblock Copolymers and Blends

The crystallization and morphology of two linear diblock copolymers based on polymethylene (PM) and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with compositions PM23-b-PVDF77 and PM38-b-PVDF62 (where the subscripts indicate the relative compositions in wt%) were compared with blends of neat components with identical compositions. The samples were studied by SAXS (Small Angle X-ray Scattering), WAXS (Wide Angle X-ray Scattering), PLOM (Polarized Light Optical Microscopy), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy), DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry), BDS (broadband dielectric spectroscopy), and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy). The results showed that the blends are immiscible, while the diblock copolymers are miscible in the melt state (or very weakly segregated). The PVDF component crystallization was studied in detail. It was found that the polymorphic structure of PVDF was a strong function of its environment. The number of polymorphs and their amount depended on whether it was on its own as a homopolymer, as a block component in the diblock copolymers or as an immiscible phase in the blends. The cooling rate in non-isothermal crystallization or the crystallization temperature in isothermal tests also induced different polymorphic compositions in the PVDF crystals. As a result, we were able to produce samples with exclusive ferroelectric phases at specific preparation conditions, while others with mixtures of paraelectric and ferroelectric phases.

Novel Molecular Organic Framework Composite Molecularly Imprinted Nanofibrous Membranes with a Bioinspired Viscid Bead Structure for Selective Recognition and Separation of Atrazine

In this work, novel atrazine (ATZ) molecularly imprinted nanofibrous membranes (A-MNMs) with a molecular organic framework (MOF)-based viscid bead structure were developed based on a natural spider-web-inspired strategy for selective separation of ATZ. Poly(vinylidene fluoride)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVDF/PVA) blended nanofibrous membranes as the basal membrane were synthesized by electrospinning technology combined with a chemical cross-linking procedure. The most critical design is that MOF nanocrystals as the matrix of the viscid bead structure were assembled on the PVDF/PVA blended nanofibrous membrane surface and the specific recognition sites were efficiently constructed on the surface and pores of the MOF-based viscid bead structure by a surface imprinting strategy. Significantly, the as-synthesized MOF-based viscid bead structure has an enhanced specific surface area, which helps to form abundant specific recognition sites in A-MNMs. Therefore, the A-MNMs with a spider-web-like structure presented an enhanced rebinding capacity (37.62 mg g^-1) and permselectivity (permselectivity factors β were 4.21 and 4.31) toward ATZ. Moreover, the A-MNMs display strong practicability in separation of ATZ from simulated environmental water samples. The presented work has shown tremendous potential for preparing natural spider-web-like molecularly imprinted membranes (MIMs) for selective separation of environment pollutants.

Proton conducting polymer electrolytes based on PVdF-PVA with NH4NO3

Conducting polymer electrolyte films were prepared based on poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVdF) and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by using a solution casting technique. The optimized PVdF-PVA polymer blend ratio was doped with different concentrations of NH4NO3 and polymer blend electrolytes were prepared. The increase in amorphous nature of the polymer electrolytes was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and optical microscopic studies. The complex formation between the polymers and the salt was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. The ac impedance studies were performed to evaluate the ionic conductivity of the polymer electrolyte membranes in the range 303–333 K and the highest ionic conductivity was found to be 2.91×10-4 S/cm at ambient temperature for PVdF-PVA-NH4NO3 (80:20:25 MWt%) polymer electrolyte, with activation energy Ea=0.7 eV. The dielectric behavior of the electrolytes was also studied.
