Coaxial-electrospinning as a new method to study confined crystallization of polymer

Carbon Capture Membranes Based on Amorphous Polyether Nanofilms Enabled by Thickness Confinement and Interfacial Engineering

Thin-film composite membranes are a leading technology for post-combustion carbon capture, and the key challenge is to fabricate defect-free selective nanofilms as thin as possible (100 nm or below) with superior CO₂/N₂ separation performance. Herein, we developed high-performance membranes based on an unusual choice of semi-crystalline blends of amorphous poly(ethylene oxide) (aPEO) and 18-crown-6 (C6) using two nanoengineering strategies. First, the crystallinity of the nanofilms decreases with decreasing thickness and completely disappears at 500 nm or below because of the thickness confinement. Second, polydimethylsiloxane is chosen as the gutter layer between the porous support and selective layer, and its surface is modified with bio-adhesive polydopamine (<10 nm) with an affinity toward aPEO, enabling the formation of the thin, defect-free, amorphous aPEO/C6 layer. For example, a 110 nm film containing 40 mass % C6 in aPEO exhibits CO₂ permeability of 900 Barrer (much higher than a thick film with 420 Barrer), rendering a membrane with a CO₂ permeance of 2200 GPU and CO₂/N₂ selectivity of 27 at 35 °C, surpassing Robeson's upper bound. This work shows that engineering at the nanoscale plays an important role in designing high-performance membranes for practical separations.

Evaluation of the PLA-nZH-Cu Nanocomposite Film on the Micro-Biological, Organoleptic and Physicochemical Qualities of Packed Chicken Meat

This research evaluated the contribution of nanocomposite films based on different concentrations of nZH-Cu (1%, 2%, and 3%) to the microbiological, organoleptic, and physicochemical characteristics of packed chicken breast meat. Analysis of some meat quality traits, such as microbiological, chemical, and physical, were conducted on a laboratory scale. For this, small squares of chicken breast meat, weighing approximately 10 g, were aseptically wrapped with rectangular pieces of 5 × 10 cm PLA-nZH-Cu nanocomposite films, which were stored at 4 °C for 20 days. The microbiological results indicated efficient antibacterial activity (at any nZH-Cu concentration in the nanocomposite films) on the total viable count of groups of psychrophiles, aerobic mesophiles, Enterobacteriaceae, and Salmonella spp. until day 10 of storage (p < 0.05). No significant changes were observed in the organoleptic (color) and physicochemical qualities (texture, weight, pH, and acidity) until day 10 of storage at 4 °C (p < 0.05). The analysis of the experimental tests carried out determined that the PLA-nZH-Cu nanocomposite films played an effective role in the bacterial safety of the packaged chicken. It was concluded that the nZH-Cu nanocomposite films, at all concentrations tested, extended the shelf life of the chicken breast meat for up to 10 days in a refrigerator at 4 °C.

Construction of a ternary system: a strategy for the rapid formation of porous poly(lactic acid) fibers

Combining electrospinning technology with nonsolvent induced phase separation (ESP-NIPS), 10 wt% poly(lactic acid) (PLA) spinning solutions are prepared by using chloroform as a good solvent and absolute ethanol as a nonsolvent. The “PLA/CHCl₃/C₂H₅OH” ternary system is constituted to realize the rapid preparation of porous-structured PLA fibers. The morphologies, thermal properties and crystalline structures of the obtained fibers are characterized and the rapid forming mechanism of PLA porous fibers is investigated and discussed. The interaction parameters between the substances of the “PLA/CHCl₃/C₂H₅OH” ternary system, binodal line, spinodal line and critical point are obtained by theoretical calculation and experiment, and the “PLA/CHCl₃/C₂H₅OH” ternary phase diagram model is established. The results show that, when the mass ratio of chloroform/ethanol is around 75/25, the rapid “in situ” formation of the PLA fibers can be realized with porous structures within 5–10 s. The establishment of a “nonsolvent-solvent–polymer” ternary phase diagram model has laid a theoretical foundation for the rapid formation of polymer porous fibers by ESP-NIPS. The ESP-NIPS for the porous PLA fibers preparation provides a new resolution for the rapid formation of porous polymer materials, which is vital to further expand the application of electrospun fibers in emergency situations such as isolation, protection, insulation and flame retardant usage.

Combining electrospinning technology with ESP-NIPS, using chloroform as a solvent and absolute ethanol as a nonsolvent, poly(lactic acid) porous fibres are prepared within 5–10 s. This preparation provides a new resolution for the rapid formation of porous polymer materials.

On the crystallization behavior of a poly(stearyl methacrylate) comb-like polymer inside a nanoscale environment

A “soft” or “hard” nanoscale template illustrates the confined processes of a poly(stearyl methylacrylate) comb-like polymer, indicating that reduced chain relaxation and mobility influence the crystallization behavior.
