Effects of Mechanical Deformation on the Opto-Electronic Responses, Reactivity, and Performance of Conjugated Polymers: A DFT Study

The development of polymers for optoelectronic applications is an important research area; however, a deeper understanding of the effects induced by mechanical deformations on their intrinsic properties is needed to expand their applicability and improve their durability. Despite the number of recent studies on the mechanochemistry of organic materials, the basic knowledge and applicability of such concepts in these materials are far from those for their inorganic counterparts. To bring light to this, here we employ molecular modeling techniques to evaluate the effects of mechanical deformations on the structural, optoelectronic, and reactivity properties of traditional semiconducting polymers, such as polyaniline (PANI), polythiophene (PT), poly (p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV), and polypyrrole (PPy). For this purpose, density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations were conducted for the distinct systems at varied stretching levels in order to identify the influence of structural deformations on the electronic structure of the systems. In general, it is noticed that the elongation process leads to an increase in electronic gaps, hypsochromic effects in the optical absorption spectrum, and small changes in local reactivities. Such changes can influence the performance of polymer-based devices, allowing us to establish significant structure deformation response relationships.

Conception and Theoretical Study of a New Copolymer Based on MEH-PPV and P3HT: Enhancement of the Optoelectronic Properties for Organic Photovoltaic Cells

A new copolymer has been studied, which is formed by Poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene-vinylene) (MEH-PPV) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). The choice of these π-conjugated polymers was based on their semiconductor characters and their great applicability in electronic organic devices. The structure and vibrational and optoelectronic properties were simulated by calculations based on DFT, TD-DFT, and ZINDO. This material shows original and unique properties compared to the basic homopolymers. Thus, the obtained results reveal that this copolymer can be mixed with the (6,6)-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) to give existence to a new composite that can be used as an active layer for an organic solar cell.

Influence of Air Flow on Luminescence Quenching in Polymer Films towards Explosives Detection Using Drones

Explosive detection has become an increased priority in recent years for homeland security and counter-terrorism applications. Although drones may not be able to pinpoint the exact location of the landmines and explosives, the identification of the explosive vapor present in the surrounding air provides significant information and comfort to the personnel and explosives removal equipment operators. Several optical methods, such as the luminescence quenching of fluorescent polymers, have been used for explosive detection. In order to utilize sensing technique via unmanned vehicles or drones, it is very important to study how the air flow affects the luminescence quenching. We investigated the effects of air flow on the quenching efficiency of Poly(2,5-di(2′-ethylhexyl)-1,4-ethynylene) (PEE) by TNT molecules. We treated the TNT molecules incorporated into the polymer film as non-radiative recombination centers, and found that the time derivative of the non-radiative recombination rates was greater with faster air flows. Our investigations show that relatively high air flow into an optical sensing part is crucial to achieving fast PL quenching. We also found that a “continuous light excitation” condition during the exposure of TNT vapor greatly influences the PL quenching.

Hole Injection Role of p-Type Conjugated Polymer Nanolayers in Phosphorescent Organic Light-Emitting Devices

Here, we report the hole injection role of p-type conjugated polymer layer in phosphorescent organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) nanolayers (thickness = ~1 nm thick), which were subjected to thermal annealing at 140 °C by varying annealing time, were inserted between indium tin oxide (ITO) anodes and hole transport layers (N,N′-bis(naphthalen-1-yl)-N,N′-bis(phenyl)-benzidine, NPB). The 1 nm-thick P3HT layers showed very weak absorption in the visible light range of 500~650 nm. The device results disclosed that the presence of P3HT layers were just able to improve the charge injection of OLEDs leading to an enhanced luminance irrespective of thermal annealing condition. The highest luminance and efficiency were achieved for the OLEDs with the P3HT layers annealed at 140 °C for 10 min. Further annealing for 30 min resulted in turn-down of device performances. The emission color was almost unchanged by the presence of P3HT layers even though the color coordinates were marginally fluctuated according to the annealing time. The present result delivers the possibility to use p-type conjugated polymers (i.e., P3HT) as a hole injection layer in OLEDs.

Polypyrrole derivatives for optoelectronic applications: a DFT study on the influence of side groups

Conjugated organic polymers have been considered interesting materials for various technological applications, mainly due to their unique optoelectronic properties and the variety of methods employed in their synthesis. In this context, polypyrrole (PPy) derivatives have been widely employed. The great versatility of synthesis of this material allows the production of a number of derivatives with distinct properties, allowing their application in several areas. In this report, aiming to guide the design of compounds with specific features, electronic structure calculations were conducted to evaluate the influence of side groups in the structural, optical and electronic properties of PPy derivatives. The calculations were carried out for oligomeric systems in the framework of density functional theory. Preliminary benchmark studies were conducted by employing two distinct functionals for geometry optimization and evaluation of optoelectronic properties. Comparative studies of the bond length alternation, spatial and energetic distribution of the frontier orbitals, electronic gaps, exciton binding energies, optical absorption spectra and electronic density of states were conducted for each derivative and the influence of the side groups was discussed in terms of their electron donation/withdrawing properties. A set of simple rules (linear equations) was proposed for the prediction of optoelectronic properties of PPy derivatives. In particular, the results have shown that simple Hammett parameters of side groups are sufficient to enable the design of improved materials.
