Sub-lethal effects of deltamethrin and permethrin resulted in ultrastructural alterations in scales and oxygen uptake changes of Anabas testudineus (Bloch, 1792)

The present study used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to assess the toxicity of sub-lethal concentrations of deltamethrin (0.035, 0.007 and 0.0007 mg L-1) and permethrin (0.93, 0.093 and 0.0093 mg L-1) on the ultrastructure of the scales of Anabas testudineus (Bloch, 1792) during a 21 day exposure. The oxygen uptake of the fish during deltamethrin (0.007 and 0.0007 mg L-1) and permethrin (0.093 and 0.0093 mg L-1) exposure was also investigated. The SEM studies revealed abnormal morphological alterations and modifications of fish scales, which were concentration-dependent. Deltamethrin-exposed fish showed severe deformation and fusion of two circuli in different rows, thereby disrupting the normal radii pattern. This fusion was probably caused by the cyanide moiety of the pesticide. On the other hand, permethrin characteristically produced a thick mucus layer over the scale surface. The different concentrations of both the pesticides affected circuli pattern with severe breakage of circuli and loss of lepidonts present over their ridges. Erythrocyte extrusions were also seen at several places over the scale surface. There was significant reduction of oxygen uptake in fish exposed to permethrin at both the concentrations, but in deltamethrin treatments significant reduction occurred only at the higher concentration of 0.007 mg L-1, though this was less than the lower permethrin concentration of 0.0093 mg L-1, and moreover effects of both the pyrethroids on oxygen consumption increased at higher concentrations.

Mixture toxicity assessment of wood preservative pesticides in the freshwater amphipod Gammarus pulex (L.)

All over the world, insecticides and fungicides are used to protect wood against pathogens. To document the environmental toxicity of wood preservative mixtures, freshwater amphipods Gammarus pulex (L.) were submitted to organic pesticides given independently or in mixtures. When given independently at environmentally realistic concentrations, propiconazole and tebuconazole (triazoles fungicides) were not toxic for G. pulex, 3-iodo-2-propinyl butyl carbamate (IPBC, fungicide) was moderately toxic, and cypermethrin (pyrethroid insecticide) was extremely toxic. 96-h LC50 were, respectively, 4703, 1643, 604, and 0.09 microg L(-1). When amphipods were submitted to a mixture mimicking the composition of a commercial solution (18.2% of cypermethrin, 45.8% propiconazole, 17.2% tebuconazole, 18.8% IPBC), the overall toxicity was equal to that of the most toxic component, namely cypermethrin. But, when organisms were submitted to the real commercial mixture containing pesticides, solvents and additives, the toxic effects were markedly higher. Moreover, a third mixture with only 0.002% cypermethrin showed lethality 2.5-18-fold higher than those predicted by the commonly used models. The present results show that toxicity of wood preservative mixtures cannot be assessed starting only from the toxicities of each single component. Furthermore, the present data strongly suggest that the environmental impacts of wood preservative mixtures might be frequently underestimated.

An ecological risk assessment for chlorpyrifos in an agriculturally dominated tributary of the San Joaquin River

Single-species toxicity testing of ambient water samples and national-scale probabilistic risk assessment have implicated the organophosphorous (OP) insecticide chlorpyrifos (O, O-diethyl O-(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridyl)-phosphorothioate) as a potential chemical stressor of aquatic organisms residing in the lower San Joaquin River basin. This site-specific aquatic ecological risk assessment was conducted to determine the probability of adverse effects occurring from exposure to chlorpyrifos in an agriculturally dominated tributary of the San Joaquin River and to assess the ecological significance of such effects. Assessment endpoints were fish population persistence and invertebrate community productivity. Daily chemical measurements collected over a period of one year were analyzed temporally for frequency, duration, and spacing between events for acute and chronic exposure episodes. Effects thresholds for fish and freshwater lotic invertebrates were determined from single-species laboratory toxicity tests. Potential risk was characterized by the degree of overlap of distributions of exposure events and effects, with consideration given to additive toxicity of other OP insecticides, recovery periods, and duration of chronic exposure (> or = 21 d). Ecological significance was determined by analysis of fish assemblage dietary and reproductive habits in relation to the surrogate invertebrate taxa judged at risk. Results of analysis indicated no direct effects on fish, and indirect effects on fish through elimination of invertebrate food items were considered unlikely. Biological survey information will be necessary to address uncertainty in this risk conclusion, especially as it relates to the benthic invertebrate community. Results of this site-specific risk analysis suggest that fish population persistence and invertebrate community productivity were not adversely affected by measured chlorpyrifos residues during a year-long monitoring period.

Impact of a pulse application of permethrin on the macroinvertebrate community of a headwater stream

This study evaluated the impact of concentrated pulse (16 microg litre(-1)) of the insecticide permethrin (emulsifiable concentrate) on the macroinvertebrate community of a northern Ontario headwater stream. Post-treatment drift increased by a factor of 2400 within minutes of the arrival of the insecticide. There was a significant (P<0.05) reduction in the abundance of invertebrates in most families as far as 260 m below the point of injection in both kick and artificial substrate samples. Greatest impact was observed in the mayflies, Baetis flavistriga. Heptagenia flavescens, and Epeorus sp., the stonefly, Leuctra tenuis, and the caddisfly, Dolophilodes distinctus. Diptera were not significantly reduced. The number of species occurring 100 m from the point of injection was reduced by 47%, but only by 17% at 260 m. There was no change in the per cent composition of functional feeding groups at any point after treatment. Recovery of most invertebrates was complete within 6 weeks of treatment.
