Fabrication of a dual pH-responsive and photothermal microcapsule pesticide delivery system for controlled release of pesticides

Simulation and application assessment of the efficacy of fosthiazate-loaded microcapsules against root-knot nematode

BACKGROUND

Although microencapsulation technology is an effective pesticide formulation method, the correlation between the release properties of microcapsules and pesticide concentrations in soil and their efficacy has not been thoroughly investigated. Here, the effects of the release properties of the nematicide Fosthiazate (FTZ) from microcapsules on their efficacy against the nematode Meloidogyne incognita were examined using experimental and mathematical approaches.

RESULTS

Gradual release of FTZ from both polyurea microcapsules (PU-MC) and melamine-formaldehyde microcapsules (MF-MC) was observed over 30 days in the release test, and each release curve was completely distinct. In the biological test, the efficacy of both microcapsules against M. incognita 42 days after the application was 8-15% higher than that of the non-encapsulated FTZ at a concentration of 2.0 mg FTZ kg-1 soil. Soil degradation experiments suggested that the microcapsules worked effectively to protect the FTZ from degradation, which resulted in higher efficacy at a later stage. A simulation study to predict the concentration of FTZ outside the microcapsule found that the timing of supplying FTZ was important and suggested that the mixture of non-encapsulated FTZ (non-MC) and MF-MC showed enhanced efficiency for the entire cultivation period in the biological test; the efficacy against nematodes was also confirmed by the measurement of nematode density using the Bearman funnel method.

CONCLUSION

The release properties of FTZ from microcapsules are critical for their effective application against M. incognita, and the established simulation study is a useful step in designing suitable release properties under complex soil conditions. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Photothermal controlled-release microcapsule pesticide delivery systems constructed with sodium lignosulfonate and transition metal ions: construction, efficacy and on-demand pesticide delivery

BACKGROUND

Widespread application of controlled-release pesticide delivery systems is a feasible and effective method to improve the utilization efficiency of pesticides. However, owing to the high cost and complicated preparation technologies of controlled-release pesticide delivery systems, their applications in agricultural production have been seriously hindered.

RESULTS

This study aimed to construct inexpensive photothermally controlled-release pesticide delivery systems using chitosan (CS) and sodium lignosulfonate (LS) as the wall materials, and a coordination assembly strategy of LS with transition metal ions to encapsulate a model pesticide, avermectin (AVM). The resulting complex or nanoparticle photothermal layers in these systems effectively achieved photothermal conversions, and replaced the use of common photothermal agents. In the prepared pesticide-delivery systems, two systems had remarkable photothermal conversion performance and photothermal stabilities with a photothermal conversion efficiency (η) of 24.03% and 28.82%, respectively, under 808 nm, 2 W near-infrared irradiation. The slow-release and ultraviolet-shielding performance of these two systems were markedly enhanced compared with other formulations. The insecticidal activities of these two systems against Plutella xylostella under irradiation with light-emitting diode (LED)-simulated sunlight were also enhanced by 5.20- and 5.06-fold, respectively, compared with that without irradiation of LED-simulated sunlight.

CONCLUSION

Because of their convenient preparations, inexpensive and renewable raw materials, and excellent photothermally controlled-release performance, these on-demand pesticide delivery systems might have significant potential in improving the utilization efficiency of pesticides in modern agriculture. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Fibrous Structures: An Overview of Their Responsiveness to External Stimuli towards Intended Application

In recent decades, the interest in responsive fibrous structures has surged, propelling them into diverse applications: from wearable textiles that adapt to their surroundings, to filtration membranes dynamically altering selectivity, these structures showcase remarkable versatility. Various stimuli, including temperature, light, pH, electricity, and chemical compounds, can serve as triggers to unleash physical or chemical changes in response. Processing methodologies such as weaving or knitting using responsive yarns, electrospinning, as well as coating procedures, enable the integration of responsive materials into fibrous structures. They can respond to these stimuli, and comprise shape memory materials, temperature-responsive polymers, chromic materials, phase change materials, photothermal materials, among others. The resulting effects can manifest in a variety of ways, from pore adjustments and altered permeability to shape changing, color changing, and thermal regulation. This review aims to explore the realm of fibrous structures, delving into their responsiveness to external stimuli, with a focus on temperature, light, and pH.

Encapsulated lignin-based slow-release manganese fertilizer with reduced cadmium accumulation in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

As an essential trace element for plant growth and development, manganese plays a crucial role in the uptake of the heavy metal cadmium by rice (Oryza sativa L.). In this study, we developed a novel slow-release manganese fertilizer named Mn@LNS-EL. Initially, lignin nanoparticles were derived from sodium lignosulfonate, and a one-step emulsification strategy was employed to prepare a water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) Pickering double emulsions. These double emulsions served as the template for interfacial polymerization of lignin nanoparticles and epichlorohydrin, resulting in the formation of microcapsule wall materials. Subsequently, manganese fertilizer (MnSO4) was successfully encapsulated within the microcapsules. Hydroponic experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of Mn@LNS-EL on rice growth and the cadmium and manganese contents in the roots and shoots of rice under cadmium stress conditions. The results revealed that the treatment with Mn@LNS-EL markedly alleviated the inhibitory effects of cadmium on rice growth, leading to notably lower cadmium levels in the rice roots and shoots compared to the specimens treated without manganese fertilizer. Specifically, there was a reduction of 37.9 % in the root cadmium content and a 17.1 % decrease in the shoot cadmium content. In conclusion, this study presents an innovative approach for the high-value utilization of lignin through effective encapsulation and slow-release mechanisms of trace-element fertilizers while offering a promising strategy for efficiently remediating cadmium pollution in rice.

Preparation, Characterization, and Bioactivity Evaluation of Lambda-Cyhalothrin Microcapsules for Slow-Controlled Release System

The utilization of interfacial polymerization in the preparation of microcapsules with a slow-controlled release has been shown to effectively improve pesticide efficacy and reduce environmental pollution. In this study, polyurea microcapsules loaded with lambda-cyhalothrin were prepared by an interfacial polymerization method using modified isocyanate (MDI) as the wall material and GT-34 as the initiator. The microcapsules were fully characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, etc., and release behaviors were investigated. The results indicated that the microcapsules had a smooth surface and uniform distribution, the average particle size of the microcapsules was 1.97 μm, and the encapsulation efficiency of lambda-cyhalothrin microcapsules could reach 91.48%. Compared with other commercial formulations, the microcapsules exhibited an excellent sustained release property (>7 days) in a 50% acetonitrile aqueous solution (v/v). Subsequently, in vitro release studies showed that the lambda-cyhalothrin microcapsules could consistently control the release of the core materials at different pH, temperature, and MDI addition amount conditions. The release of lambda-cyhalothrin microcapsules was in accordance with the first-order model release, which was mainly by the Fickian diffusion mechanism. Furthermore, the biological activity on Myzus persicae showed that the microcapsules' persistence period was above 21 days, which was longer than that for the emulsifiable concentrate formulation.

pH-responsive bentonite nanoclay carriers control the release of benzothiazolinone to restrain bacterial wilt disease

Ralstonia solanacearum (R. solanacearum) is one of the most devastating pathogens in terms of losses in agricultural production. Bentonite (Bent) is a promising synergistic agent used in development of effective and environmentally friendly pesticides against plant disease. However, the synergistic mechanism of Bent nanoclays with benzothiazolinone (BIT) against R. solanacearum is unknown. In this work, acid-functionalized porous Bent and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) were employed as the core nanoclays, and BIT was loaded into the clay to form BIT-loaded CT-Bent (BIT@CT-Bent) for the control of bacterial wilt disease. BIT@CT-Bent exhibited pH-responsive release behavior that fit the Fickian diffusion model, rapidly releasing BIT in an acidic environment (pH = 5.5). The antibacterial effect of BIT@CT-Bent was approximately 4 times greater than that of the commercial product BIT, and its biotoxicity was much lower than that of BIT under the same conditions. Interestingly, R. solanacearum attracted BIT@CT-Bent into the nanocomposites and induced cytoplasmic leakage and changes in membrane permeability, indicating an efficient and synergistic bactericidal effect that rapidly reduced bacterial density. In addition, BIT@CT-Bent significantly inhibited R. solanacearum biofilm formation and swimming activity, by suppressing the expression of phcA, solR and vsrC. Indeed, exogenous application of BIT@CT-Bent significantly suppressed the virulence of R. solanacearum on tobacco plants, with control effect of 75.48%, 72.08% and 66.08% at 9, 11 and 13 days after inoculation, respectively. This study highlights the potential of using BIT@CT-Bent as an effective, eco-friendly bactericide to control bacterial wilt diseases and for the development of sustainable crop protection strategies.

Ecofriendly polysaccharide-based alginate/pluronic F127 semi-IPN hydrogel with magnetic collectability for precise release of pesticides and sustained pest control

Controlled-release systems are crucial for efficient pesticide utilization and environmental protection in agricultural production. The utilization of polysaccharide-based materials derived from biopolymers as carriers for controlling pesticide release holds significant potential. In this work, a reversible near infrared-responsive polysaccharide-based hydrogel (RNPH) was fabricated by employing a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (alginate-FeIII/pluronic F127) as a carrier to encapsulate Fe3O4@polydopamine (FP) and emamectin benzoate (EB)-loaded hollow mesoporous silica. The incorporation of FP into the RNPH introduced a photothermal effect, enabling the precise release of EB through reversible shrinkage of the hydrogel upon NIR irradiation. Additionally, the presence of magnetic Fe3O4 in the system facilitated the rapid removal of remaining RNPH from the environment using a magnet, reducing EB residue. Importantly, RNPH exhibited exceptional controlled-release performance and could be reused for at least 4 cycles. Furthermore, the anti-photolysis ability of EB protected by RNPH was enhanced by 4.8 times compared to EB alone. Moreover, RNPH significantly improved the adhesion of EB to foliar surfaces, thereby reducing the loss of EB while ensuring crop safety. Therefore, the polysaccharide-based hydrogel holds promise as a versatile carrier for the precise release of EB, offering valuable applications in enhancing pesticide bioavailability and promoting environmental safety.

Interfacial Polymerization Depth Mediated by the Shuttle Effect Regulating the Application Performance of Pesticide-Loaded Microcapsules

The highly water-soluble nematicide fosthiazate is anticipated to undergo microencapsulation in order to enhance its retention around plant roots and mitigate leaching into groundwater. However, the underlying mechanism governing the influence of hydrophilicity of the microcapsule (MC) core on the evolution of the microcapsule shell remains unclear, posing challenges for encapsulating water-soluble core materials. This study elucidates the microlevel formation mechanism of microcapsules by investigating the impact of interfacial mass transfer on shell formation and proposes a method for regulating the structure of shells. The study reveals that enhancing the hydrophilicity of the core enhances the shuttle effect between the oil and aqueous phase, expands the region of polymerization reactions, and forms a loose and thick shell. The thickness of the microcapsule shell prepared using solvent oil 150# (MCs-SOL) measures only 264 nm, while that of the microcapsules prepared using propylene glycol diacetate and solvent oil 150# at a ratio of 2:1 (MCs-P2S1) is 5.2 times greater. The enhanced compactness of the shell reduced the release rate of microcapsules and the leaching distance of fosthiazate in soil, thereby mitigating the risk of leaching loss and facilitating the distribution of active ingredients within crop roots. The MCs-SOL had a limited leaching distance measurement of 8 cm and exhibited a satisfactory efficacy of 87.3% in controlling root galling nematodes. The thickness and compactness of the MCs shell can be regulated by manipulating the interfacial shuttle effect, providing a promising approach to enhancing utilization efficiency while mitigating potential environmental risks.

Construction and formulation optimization of prothioconazole nanoemulsions for the control of Fusarium graminearum: Enhancing activity and reducing toxicity

In this study, the optimal emulsifier for prothioconazole nanoemulsions was initially screened based on appearance, microscopic observation, mean droplet size and polydispersity index (PDI). In addition, the BoxBehnken design method is adopted, and the optimal formula is screened with an emulsification time, emulsifier content, and solvent content as a single factor. On this basis, the nanoemulsion meets FAO standards for various indicators. The contact angle of droplets on wheat leaves was significantly reduced. This nanoemulsion also showed good inhibitory activity against Fusarium graminearum (EC₅₀ =1.94 mg L^-1), low acute toxicity to zebrafish (LC₅₀ =26.35 mg L^-1) and good biosafety to BEAS-2B cells. The nanoemulsion reduced the adverse effects of pesticide on wheat seed germination and growth. This study can help promote the design and manufacture of stable, efficient and safe agricultural nanoemulsions, and is expected to benefit the sustainable development of green plant protection.
