Abstract
Background and Objectives: Citrullus colocynthis belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family and is a wild medicinal plant used in folk literature to treat various diseases. The purpose of the current study was to explore the antihypertensive and antioxidant potentials of Citrullus colocynthis (CC) polyphenol-rich fractions using a spontaneous hypertensive rat (SHR) model. Materials and Methods: The concentrated aqueous ethanol extract of CC fruit was successively fractioned using solvents of increasing polarity, i.e., hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol. The obtained extracts were analyzed for total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and total flavonol content (TOF). Moreover, the CC extracts were further evaluated for radical scavenging capacity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) assays and antioxidant activity using inhibition of linoleic acid peroxidation and determination of reducing potential protocols. The phytochemical components were characterized by HPLC-MWD-ESI-MS in positive ionization mode. Results: The results showed that ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) exhibited a higher content of phenolic compounds in term of TPC (289 mg/g), TFC (7.6 mg/g) and TOF (35.7 mg/g). EAF showed higher antioxidant and DPPH and ABTS scavenging activities with SC50 values of 6.2 and 79.5 µg/mL, respectively. LCMS analysis revealed that twenty polyphenol compounds were identified in the EAF, including phenolic acids and flavonoids, mainly myricetin and quercetin derivatives. The in vivo antihypertensive activity of EAF of CC on SHR revealed that it significantly decreased the mean arterial pressure (MAP), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressures (DBP) and pulse pressure (PP) as compared to normal and hypertensive control groups. Moreover, EAF of CC significantly reduced the oxidative stress in the animals in a dose-dependent manner by normalizing the levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), nitric oxide (NOx) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). Furthermore, the treatment groups, especially the 500 mg of EAF per kg body weight (EA-500) group, significantly (p ≤ 0.05) improved the electrocardiogram (ECG) pattern and pulse wave velocity (PWV). Conclusion: It was concluded that the EAF of CC is a rich source of polyphenols and showed the best antioxidant activity and antihypertensive potential in SHR.

Abstract
Blackcurrant possesses various health-endorsing attributes owing to its polyphenol profile. Recent studies have demonstrated its therapeutic potential against various health disorders. Various bioactives present in blackcurrants have different functional and pharmacological aspects including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. The most dominant and important bioactive include anthocyanins, flavonols, phenolic acids, and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Food formats derived from blackcurrants comprise pomace, juice, powder, and extracts. All these food formats have industrial, prebiotic, and pharmacological benefits. In the current article, the nutritional composition, industrial applications, and therapeutic potential are discussed in the recent literature. Moreover, novel extraction techniques for the extraction of bioactive compounds present in blackcurrants and their safety concerns have been elaborated.

Abstract
Psittacanthus calyculatus is a hemiparasitic plant of an arboreal species (e.g., forest, fruit trees). Its foliage has therapeutic potential; however, little is known about its fruits. In this study, the phytochemical profile and biological activities of P. calyculatus fruits hosted by Prosopis laevigata and Quercus deserticola were evaluated. The fruits of P. calyculatus from P. laevigata showed the highest content of total phenols (71.396 ± 0.676 mg GAE/g DW). The highest content of flavonoids and anthocyanins was presented in those from Q. deserticola (14.232 ± 0.772 mg QE/g DW; 2.431 ± 0.020 mg C3GE/g DW). The anthocyanin cyanidin-3-glucoside was detected and quantified via high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) (306.682 ± 11.804 mg C3GE/g DW). Acidified extracts from host P. laevigata showed the highest antioxidant activity via ABTS•+ (2,2'azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazdin-6-sulfonic acid) (214.810 ± 0.0802 mg TE/g DW). Fruit extracts with absolute ethanol from the P. laevigata host showed the highest antihypertensive activity (92 ± 3.054% inhibition of an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE)). Fruit extracts from both hosts showed a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 6.25 mg/mL and a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of 12.5 mg/mL against Escherichia coli, Salmonella choleraesuis and Shigella flexneri. Interestingly, a significant host effect was found. P. calyculatus fruits extract could be used therapeutically. However, further confirmation experiments should be carried out.

Abstract
A systematic review and meta-analysis were designed to summarize studies conducted on the effects of raspberry and blackcurrant consumption on blood pressure (BP). Eligible studies were detected by searching numerous five online databases including PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar, until December 17, 2022. We pooled the mean difference and its 95% confidence interval (CI) by applying a random-effects model. Overall, the impact of raspberry and blackcurrant on BP was reported in ten randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (420 subjects). Pooled analysis of six clinical trials revealed that raspberry consumption has no significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (SBP) (weighted mean differences [WMDs], -1.42; 95% CI, -3.27 to 0.87; p = 0.224) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) (WMD, -0.53; 95% CI, -1.77 to 0.71; p = 0.401), in comparison with placebo. Moreover, pooled analysis of four clinical trials indicated that blackcurrant consumption did not reduce SBP (WMD, -1.46; 95% CI, -6.62 to 3.7; p = 0.579), and DBP (WMD, -2.09; 95% CI, -4.38 to 0.20; p = 0.07). Raspberry and blackcurrant consumption elicited no significant reductions in BP. More accurate RCTs are required to clarify the impact of raspberry and blackcurrant intake on BP.

Abstract
Ajuga bracteosa has been used in traditional medicine to treat hypertension and other ailments. The present study has been designed to investigate the beneficial effects of A. bracteosa in l-nitro arginine methyl ester (l-NAME)-induced hypertensive rats. Hypertension was induced by intraperitoneal injection of l-NAME (185 μmol kg-1 i.p.). The aqueous methanol extract of A. bracteosa (AMEAB, 250 and 500 mg kg-1) and coumarin (30 and 70 mg kg-1) were administered orally from day 8 to day 35 of the study. In vivo antihypertensive activity was assessed by measuring the blood pressure using a PowerLab data system. The effects of the AMEAB and coumarin on nitric oxide (NO), cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), the tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), and oxidative stress markers were also assessed using kit methods. Phytochemical profiling of the AMEAB was carried out through high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) where quercetin, gallic acid, caffeic acid, vanillic acid, benzoic acid, syringic acid, p-coumaric acid, and ferulic acid were labeled as plant constituents including coumarin. The AMEAB and coumarin significantly reduced blood pressure at the tested doses of 500 and 70 mg kg-1, respectively. Serum levels of NO and cGMP were found to be significantly increased in AMEAB- and coumarin-treated groups when compared with only l-NAME-challenged rats. In addition, a marked decrease was noticed in the serum concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-6 and TNF-α) in AMEAB- and coumarin-treated rats. Moreover, in AMEAB- and coumarin-treated animals, a noticeable improvement was observed in the levels of antioxidant enzymes including catalase, superoxide dismutase, and malonaldehyde, and the total oxidant status when compared with those of only l-NAME-challenged rats. The data of real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) experiments supported that the antihypertensive and anti-inflammatory activities of the AMEAB and coumarin are possibly mediated through modulation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), nuclear factor (NF)-kB, and COX-2 gene expressions. This study concludes that A. bracteosa possesses an antihypertensive effect mediated through the modulation of the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and NO/cGMP pathways, thus providing a rationale to the antihypertensive use of A. bracteosa in traditional medicine.

Abstract
The effects of commercial enzymes (pectinases, cellulases, beta-1-3-glucanases, and pectin lyases) on the recovery of anthocyanins and polyphenols from blackcurrant press cake were studied considering two solid:solvent ratios (1:10 and 1:4 w/v). β-glucanase enabled the recovery of the highest total phenolic content - 1142 mg/100 g, and the extraction of anthocyanins was similar using all enzymes (∼400 mg/100 g). The use of cellulases and pectinases enhanced the extraction of antioxidants (DPPH - 1080 mg/100 g; CUPRAC - 3697 mg/100 g). The freeze-dried extracts presented antioxidant potential (CUPRAC, DPPH), which was associated with their biological effects in different systems: antiviral activity against both non-enveloped viruses (enterovirus coxsackievirus A-9) and enveloped coronaviruses (HCoV-OC43), and cytotoxicity towards cancer cells (A549 and HCT8). No cytotoxic effects on normal human lung fibroblast (IMR90) were observed, and no anti-inflammatory activity was detected in lipopolysaccharides-treated murine immortalised microglial cells.

Abstract
Eucommiae Folium (EF), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been used to treat secondary hypertension, including renal hypertension and salt-sensitive hypertension, as well as hypertension caused by thoracic aortic endothelial dysfunction, a high-fat diet, and oxidized low-density lipoprotein. The antihypertensive components of EF are divided into four categories: flavonoids, iridoids, lignans, and phenylpropanoids, such as chlorogenic acid, geniposide acid and pinoresinol diglucoside. EF regulates the occurrence and development of hypertension by regulating biological processes, such as inhibiting inflammation, regulating the nitric oxide synthase pathway, reducing oxidative stress levels, regulating endothelial vasoactive factors, and lowering blood pressure. However, its molecular antihypertensive mechanisms are still unclear and require further investigation. In this review, by consulting the relevant literature on the antihypertensive effects of EF and using network pharmacology, we summarized the active ingredients and pharmacological mechanisms of EF in the treatment of hypertension to clarify how EF is associated with secondary hypertension, the related components, and underlying mechanisms. The results of the network pharmacology analysis indicated that EF treats hypertension through a multi-component, multi-target and multi-pathway mechanism. In particular, we discussed the role of EF targets in the treatment of hypertension, including epithelial sodium channel, heat shock protein70, rho-associated protein kinase 1, catalase, and superoxide dismutase. The relevant signal transduction pathways, the ras homolog family member A (RhoA)/Rho-associated protein kinase (ROCK) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase/eNOS/NO/Ca2+ pathways, are also discussed. Eucommiae Folium (EF) treats secondary hypertension via the RhoA/ROCK1 and NO/sGC/cGMP pathways. EF inhibits oxidative stress and improves endothelial dysfunction to treat hypertension. EF's antihypertensive components are phenylpropanoids, flavonoids, lignans, iridoids. KEGG analysis showed EF treated hypertension through the MAPK and TNF signaling pathways.

Abstract
Arterial hypertension (AHT) is a leading cardiovascular disease, with a high negative impact on the quality of life. Crinum zeylanicum (C. zeylanicum) leaves extract is used in the West region of Cameroon to treat AHT and heart problems. This study aimed to investigate the antihypertensive effect of C. zeylanicum extract in Nω-nitro-L‐arginine methyl ester- (L‐NAME-) induced hypertensive rats. The aqueous extract of C. zeylanicum (LAE) was obtained by lyophilizing the juice of triturated fresh leaves. The methanol extract (LME) prepared by maceration of the dried leaves was further partitioned to chloroform (LCF), ethyl acetate (LEAF), and residual (LRF) fractions. The total polyphenol, flavonoid content, and antiradical potentials of these extracts were determined. The curative antihypertensive and renal function protective effects of LME and LEAF were evaluated in vivo on L-NAME-induced hypertensive rats. Hypertension was induced in rats by oral administration of L-NAME (30 mg/kg/day) for 3 consecutive weeks. Thereafter, plant extracts were administered orally at the doses of 30, 60, and 120 mg/kg/day, concomitantly with L-NAME for three other weeks. Body weight, heart rate, and arterial blood pressure were measured at the end of each week throughout the experimental period. At the end of the treatment, 24-hour urine and plasma were collected to assay nitric oxide (NO), creatinine, and protein. The results revealed that LEAF has the higher content of total polyphenol and flavonoid and exhibited the best antiradical potential. Moreover, treatment of hypertensive rats with LME and LEAF significantly (p < 0.001) reduced AHT and heart rate. LME and LEAF significantly increased rat's body mass, plasmatic NO, and urinary creatinine and reduced urine NO and protein contents as compared to the L-NAME group. LME and its LEAF possess potent antihypertensive effects and further protect the renal function in L-NAME-induced hypertensive rats, thus supporting the use of C. zeylanicum in the management of AHT.
