Complex solution chemistry behind the simple "one-pot" synthesis of vanadium-substituted polyoxometalates unraveled by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry

Microchemical environmental regulation of POMs@MIL-101(Cr) promote photocatalytic nitrogen to ammonia

The polyoxometalates (POMs) have been shown to be highly effective as reactive sites for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation reactions. However, the effect of POMs regulation on catalytic performance has not been reported yet. Herein, a series of composites (SiW₉M₃@MIL-101(Cr) (M = Fe, Co, V, Mo) and D-SiW₉Mo₃@MIL-101(Cr), D, Disordered) were obtained by regulating transition metal compositions and arrangement in the POMs. The ammonia production rate of SiW₉Mo₃@MIL-101(Cr) is much higher than that of other composites, reaching 185.67 μmol·h^-1·g^-1_cat in N₂ without sacrificial agents. The structural characterization of composites reveals that the increase of the electron cloud density of W atom in composites is the key to improve the photocatalytic performance. In this paper, the microchemical environment of POMs was regulated by transition metal doping method, thereby promoting the efficiency of photocatalytic ammonia synthesis for the composites, which provides new insights into the design of POM-based photocatalysts with high catalytic activity.

Recent Approaches for Chemical Speciation and Analysis by Electrospray Ionization (ESI) Mass Spectrometry

In recent years, the chemical speciation of several species has been increasingly monitored and investigated, employing electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). This soft ionization technique gently desolvates weak metal–ligand complexes, taking them in the high vacuum sectors of mass spectrometric instrumentation. It is, thus, possible to collect information on their structure, energetics, and fragmentation pathways. For this reason, this technique is frequently chosen in a synergistic approach to investigate competitive ligand exchange-adsorption otherwise analyzed by cathodic stripping voltammetry (CLE-ACSV). ESI-MS analyses require a careful experimental design as measurement may face instrumental artifacts such as ESI adduct formation, fragmentation, and sometimes reduction reactions. Furthermore, ESI source differences of ionization efficiencies among the detected species can be misleading. In this mini-review are collected and critically reported the most recent approaches adopted to mitigate or eliminate these limitations and to show the potential of this analytical technique.

Direct Syntheses of Nanocages and Frameworks Based on Anderson-Type Polyoxometalates via One-Pot Reactions

A new one-step synthetic protocol of tris-functionalized Anderson polyoxomolybdates directly from heptamolybdate salts was presented in this Communication. Through this new method, we obtained the first example of Anderson-type polyoxomolybdates with vanadium as the heteroatom. Moreover, the crystals of the products exhibited interesting nanocage or framework extended structures, which were greatly affected by the trialkoxyl ligands as well as the counterions.

Novel method for characterization of aqueous vanadium species: A perspective for the transition metal chemical speciation studies

Identification the polymerization nature of vanadium bearing solution is difficult, yet it is of great environmental concern due to the possible carcinogenic effects as well as high-value sustainable necessities. Thus, seeking for simple and efficient characterization methods of tracking vanadium species is in urgent demand. In this work, high-resolution electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF-MS) coupled with thermodynamic calculations was employed to measure vanadium-containing samples. Evolutions of four characteristic vanadium species, H₂VO₄^- (0-1%), V₂ species (0-1%), V₄ species (1-20%), and V₁₀ species (60-95%), were comprehensively studied from acidic to neutral conditions, based on which thermodynamic model and vanadium phase diagram were established to visualize transformation pathways. More than 30 types of aqueous vanadium species could be semi-quantitatively detected by employing this method with less than 5% relative error, and the corresponding existing forms and concentration of these vanadium species could be well predicted. The vanadium species identified in MS results were confirmed by NMR. This method can be widely used for the understanding of vanadium speciation in practical examples, especially involving V(V), Cr(VI) ions or organic complexes.

Effect of vanadium valence state on the solution chemistry and the stability of vanadium substituted polyoxometalates

ESI-MS combined with DFT calculation revealed that the vanadium valence state and the vanadium substitution degrees can substantially affect the stabilities of vanadium-substituted POMs.
