Functional group quantification on epoxy surfaces by chemical derivatization (CD)-XPS

Visualizing interface-specific chemical bonds in adhesive bonding of carbon fiber structural composites using soft X-ray microscopy

Adhesion is a technology for assembling carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polymer (CFRP), enabling them to maintain their lightweight and high-stiffness properties. Despite the importance of adhesion, the lack of a molecular-level understanding of the adhesion mechanisms has limited the reliability of adhesion for use in next-generation aircraft and automobiles. Here, we focused on the chemical-state distribution at a practical adhesive interface composed of an epoxy-based adhesive film bonded to an epoxy-based CF matrix. By fluorinating the OH group, we succeeded in visualizing the chemical state at the CF-matrix/adhesive interface using soft X-ray microscopy. The soft X-ray images exhibited a decrease in OH-related signals at the interface due to the local chemical interaction at the epoxy-epoxy adhesive interface. We also found that the N and O Kα signals were observable at the CF's surface, indicating the presence of nitrogen- and oxygen-containing functional groups. Based on these observations, we discuss the molecular-level adhesion mechanism at the CF-matrix/adhesive interface.

Strengthening Engineered Nanocrystal Three-Dimensional Superlattices via Ligand Conformation and Reactivity

Nanocrystal assembly into ordered structures provides mesostructural functional materials with a precise control that starts at the atomic scale. However, the lack of understanding on the self-assembly itself plus the poor structural integrity of the resulting supercrystalline materials still limits their application into engineered materials and devices. Surface functionalization of the nanobuilding blocks with organic ligands can be used not only as a means to control the interparticle interactions during self-assembly but also as a reactive platform to further strengthen the final material via ligand cross-linking. Here, we explore the influence of the ligands on superlattice formation and during cross-linking via thermal annealing. We elucidate the effect of the surface functionalization on the nanostructure during self-assembly and show how the ligand-promoted superlattice changes subsequently alter the cross-linking behavior. By gaining further insights on the chemical species derived from the thermally activated cross-linking and its effect in the overall mechanical response, we identify an oxidative radical polymerization as the main mechanism responsible for the ligand cross-linking. In the cascade of reactions occurring during the surface-ligands polymerization, the nanocrystal core material plays a catalytic role, being strongly affected by the anchoring group of the surface ligands. Ultimately, we demonstrate how the found mechanistic insights can be used to adjust the mechanical and nanostructural properties of the obtained nanocomposites. These results enable engineering supercrystalline nanocomposites with improved cohesion while preserving their characteristic nanostructure, which is required to achieve the collective properties for broad functional applications.

Functionalization of Diamine-Appended MOF-Based Adsorbents by Ring Opening of Epoxide: Long-Term Stability and CO2 Recyclability under Humid Conditions

Although diamine-appended metal-organic framework (MOF) adsorbents exhibit excellent CO₂ adsorption performance, a continuous decrease in long-term capacity during repeated wet cycles remains a formidable challenge for practical applications. Herein, we present the fabrication of diamine-appended Mg₂(dobpdc)-alumina beads (een-MOF/Al-Si-Cx; een = N-ethylethylenediamine; x = number of carbon atoms attached to epoxide) coated with hydrophobic silanes and alkyl epoxides. The reaction of epoxides with diamines in the portal of the pore afforded sufficient hydrophobicity, hindered the penetration of water vapor into the pores, and rendered the modified diamines less volatile. een-MOF/Al-Si-C17-200 (een-MOF/Al-Si-C17-y; y = 50, 100, and 200, denoting wt % of C17 with respect to the bead, respectively), with substantial hydrophobicity, showed a significant uptake of 2.82 mmol g^-1 at 40 °C and 15% CO₂, relevant to flue gas concentration, and a reduced water adsorption. The modified beads maintained a high CO₂ capacity for over 100 temperature-swing adsorption cycles in the presence of 5% H₂O and retained CO₂ separation performance in breakthrough tests under humid conditions. This result demonstrates that the epoxide coating provides a facile and effective method for developing promising adsorbents with high CO₂ adsorption capacity and long-term durability, which is a required property for postcombustion applications.

Versatile Bottom-Up Synthesis of Tethered Bilayer Lipid Membranes on Nanoelectronic Biosensor Devices

Interfacing nanoelectronic devices with cell membranes can enable multiplexed detection of fundamental biological processes (such as signal transduction, electrophysiology, and import/export control) even down to the single ion channel level, which can lead to a variety of applications in pharmacology and clinical diagnosis. Therefore, it is necessary to understand and control the chemical and electrical interface between the device and the lipid bilayer membrane. Here, we develop a simple bottom-up approach to assemble tethered bilayer lipid membranes (tBLMs) on silicon wafers and glass slides, using a covalent tether attachment chemistry based on silane functionalization, followed by step-by-step stacking of two other functional molecular building blocks (oligo-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and lipid). A standard vesicle fusion process was used to complete the bilayer formation. The monolayer synthetic scheme includes three well-established chemical reactions: self-assembly, epoxy-amine reaction, and EDC/NHS cross-linking reaction. All three reactions are facile and simple and can be easily implemented in many research labs, on the basis of common, commercially available precursors using mild reaction conditions. The oligo-PEG acts as the hydrophilic spacer, a key role in the formation of a homogeneous bilayer membrane. To explore the broad applicability of this approach, we have further demonstrated the formation of tBLMs on three common classes of (nano)electronic biosensor devices: indium-tin oxide-coated glass, silicon nanoribbon devices, and high-density single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) networks on glass. More importantly, we incorporated alemethicin into tBLMs and realized the real-time recording of single ion channel activity with high sensitivity and high temporal resolution using the tBLMs/SWNT network transistor hybrid platform. This approach can provide a covalently bonded lipid coating on the oxide layer of nanoelectronic devices, which will enable a variety of applications in the emerging field of nanoelectronic interfaces to electrophysiology.
