Molecular dynamics simulation on the interaction between polymer inhibitors and anhydrite surface

Molecular dynamics simulation of the interaction between monofluoronitrobenzene and Ti electrode

In the process of degradation of aqueous fluoro-nitrobenzene (FNB) solution by titanium (Ti) electrode, the interaction between aqueous FNB solution and Ti electrode has an important impact on the performance and catalytic performance of electrode materials. The interaction involves complex physical, chemical and physical chemical processes, however, the mechanism of action is still unclear. In this study, Materials Studio software was used to design and construct molecular models of the interactions between aqueous FNB (p-, m-, o-FNB) solutions and Ti electrode, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was carried out in the absence of applied electric field and external electric field of 0.02 V/Å, respectively. Density functional theory (DFT) method was used to calculate the frontier molecular orbitals of three FNB molecules. Based on the calculation and analysis of the interaction energy (ΔE), diffusion coefficient (D) and radial distribution function (RDF), the interaction mechanism was discussed. It provides a theoretical basis for further research and development of Ti electrode degradation of fluorine compounds. The results showed that the order of ΔE between the three different aqueous FNB solutions and Ti surface is m-FNB > p-FNB > o-FNB when there is no external electric field. Under electric field of 0.02 V/Å, the order is p-FNB > m-FNB > o-FNB. The substitution position of F has an important effect on the HOMO of the nitro group and the LUMO of C-H in the three FNB molecules, and also affects the chemical reaction activity. In the model system, the diffusivity of different FNB solutions with electric field is less than that without electric field. The presence of an external electric field makes the diffusion of water and FNB molecules more orderly. The analysis results of RDF show that the bonding interactions between different FNB molecules and Ti surface is not much different before 3.5 Å, and all of them are weak. At about 8 Å, FNB molecule forms a non-bond with Ti electrode. ΔE, D and RDF of the model system can be changed by applying a certain external electric field, and the results are in better agreement with the experimental results.

A structure-property study for konjac glucomannan and guar galactomannan: Selective carboxylation and scale inhibition

The effect of structural difference for konjac glucomannan (KGM) and guar galactomannan (GGM) on their physicochemical properties including selective carboxylation, biodegradation and scale inhibition was firstly investigated. Compared with GGM, KGM can be specially modified by amino acid to prepare carboxyl-functionalized polysaccharides. The structure-activity relationship explaining the difference in carboxylation activity and the anti-scaling abilities of polysaccharides and carboxylated derivatives were explored by static anti-scaling, iron oxide dispersion and biodegradation tests coupled with structural and morphological characterizations. KGM with linear structure was preferred for carboxylated modification by glutamic acid (KGMG) and aspartic acid (KGMA) while GGM with branched structure failed to accomplish that due to steric hindrance. GGM and KGM showed limited scale inhibition performance, which was probably attributed to the moderate adsorption and isolation effect of macromolecular stereoscopic structure. While KGMA and KGMG performed as effective and degradable inhibitors for CaCO₃ scale with inhibitory efficiencies > 90 %.

Understanding the Effects of a Polymer on the Surface Dissolution of Pharmaceutical Cocrystals Using Combined Experimental and Molecular Dynamics Simulation Approaches

The molecular interactions between the surfaces of cocrystals [i.e., flufenamic acid and theophylline (FFA-TP), flufenamic acid and nicotinamide (FFA-NIC), and carbamazepine and nicotinamide (CBZ-NIC)] and the polymers [i.e., polyethylene glycol (PEG), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and copolymer of vinylpyrrolidone (60%)/vinyl acetate (40%) (PVP-VA)] were investigated through combined experimental and molecular dynamics simulation approaches to resolve the mechanisms of cocrystal dissolution and precipitation. It was found that adsorption of the polymers on the surfaces of cocrystals might prevent the precipitation of the parent drug and alter the dissolution rate. The effect of polymers on precipitation could be determined by the cocrystal dissolution rate, the interactions of polymers with the surfaces of cocrystals, the characters of the noncovalent bonds formed between the polymers and the cocrystal surfaces, and the mobility and conformation of the polymers. The etching experiments of single cocrystals revealed that FFA-NIC and CBZ-NIC appeared as surface precipitation cocrystals while FFA-TP could lead to bulk precipitation. Both PVP and PVP-VA were good precipitation inhibitors for FFA-NIC, and they could completely inhibit the recrystallization of FFA III on the surfaces of dissolving cocrystals. In addition, as the adsorption of the polymer was slower than dissolution rate of the cocrystals, PVP and PVP-VA could only partially inhibit the recrystallization of CBZ dihydrate on the surface of CBZ-NIC. While PEG had no inhibitory effect on the surface crystallization of FFA-NIC and CBZ-NIC, due to its weak interactions with the surfaces of the cocrystals, it enhanced the dissolution performance of FFA-TP. In contrast, PVP and PVP-VA reduced the dissolution rate of FFA-TP and subsequently undermined the performance of cocrystals. Taken together, the approach of combining experimental and molecular dynamics simulation provided insights into the mechanisms of cocrystal dissolution as well as the polymers acting as inhibitory excipients for precipitation/recrystallization, making contribution to the development of novel formulations.

Water Effects on Molecular Adsorption of Poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) on Cellulose Nanocrystals Surfaces: Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Models of interaction between a poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) macromolecule and a fragment of Iβ-cellulose were built in a vacuum and water environment. The models were made to interpret the mechanism of interaction of the polymer and cellulose nanocrystals by the classical molecular dynamics method. The structural behavior of a poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) macromolecule in water has been studied in terms of the radius of gyration, atom-atom radial distribution functions and number of hydrogen bonds. It was found that the polymer has a high affinity with the solvent and each monomer unit has on average 0.5 hydrogen bonds. The structural and energy characteristics of the polymer adsorption were investigated at different initial positions of the poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) macromolecule relative to the cellulose fragment. It was observed that the polymer macromolecule was mainly adsorbed on the cellulose fragment in the globular form. Moreover, in the solvent the interaction of poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) with the cellulose hydrophobic surface was stronger than that with the hydrophilic one. This study will show that the presence of water makes the interaction between the polymer and cellulose weaker than in a vacuum, and the polymer and cellulose mainly interact through their solvation shells.
