Liquid-Core Hydrogel Optical Fiber Fluorescence Probes

This paper first reports a liquid-core hydrogel optical fiber fluorescence probe. It is composed of a liquid core, a high-refractive-index hydrogel fiber core, and a low-refractive-index hydrogel fiber cladding, which is completely different from many existing optical fiber fluorescence probes. The sensing solution with sensitive materials is sealed as a liquid core, and it can sufficiently react with small-molecule targets penetrating through the hydrogel fiber cladding and core, thus inducing variations in the fluorescence signals. These fluorescence signals can be localized and transmitted within the probe and finally collected and quantified for target detection. This proposed probe can be simply and rapidly fabricated and reused, and it was proven to have high sensitivity, accuracy, and selectivity in practical applications. Therefore, this liquid-core hydrogel optical fiber fluorescence probe will enable a novel sensing platform for small-molecule analyte detection that faces on-site detection challenges.

Biosynthesis of bifunctional silver nanoparticles for catalytic reduction of organic pollutants and optical monitoring of mercury (II) ions using their oxidase-mimic activity

In this study, an aqueous extract of Sclerocarya birrea leaves was used as a reducing agent to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The synthesis was carried out at room temperature and was both rapid and simple. Different characterization techniques such as UV/visible spectroscopy, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy were used to confirm the formation of AgNPs. The synthesized nanoparticles exhibited catalytic activity for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol, methyl orange, methylene blue, and rhodamine 6G. The catalytic activity was monitored by measuring the UV/visible absorbance spectra of the compounds using sodium borohydride as a reducing agent and found to be high. Additionally, the particles displayed oxidase-like activity. In the presence of AgNPs, 3, 3', 5, 5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) which is colorless was transformed to oxidized TMB, which is blue, using dissolved oxygen as the oxidant. In the presence of Hg2+, the oxidase-like activity was enhanced. On the basis of this observation, an assay for the analysis of Hg2+ was developed. The linear range of the calibration curve is wide (0-600 µM) and the limit of detection (LOD) is low, as small as 34.8 nM. The method is strongly selective towards Hg2+. Tap water obtained from the laboratory where these experiments were carried out was used to study the feasibility of the method in real sample analyses.

Raposo MM. Optical Fiber Sensors for Biocide Monitoring: Examples, Transduction Materials, and Prospects

Antifouling biocides are toxic to the marine environment impacting negatively on the aquatic ecosystems. These biocides, namely, tributyltin (TBT) and Cu(I) compounds, are used to avoid biofouling; however, their toxicity turns TBT and Cu(I) monitoring an important health issue. Current monitoring methods are expensive and time-consuming. This review provides an overview of the actual state of the art of antifouling paints' biocides, including their impact and toxicity, as well as the reported methods for TBT and Cu(I) detection over the past decade. The principles of optical fiber sensors (OFS) applications, with focus on environmental applications, and the use of organic chemosensors in this type of sensors are debated. The multiplexing ability of OFS and their application on aquatic environments are also discussed.
